Thursday, October 8, 7:30 PMNEW YORK CLASSICAL QUARTET_1Luigi Boccherini—First, Final & In Between
The 1 st of four Thursday evening concerts of classical string quartet repertory opens with surprisingly varied and expressive works of a master who composed the earliest of his 90
string quartets before, and his last quartets after, those of Haydn —from Quartet in C minor, Op. 2, No. 1, in 1761, to Quartet in F, Op. 64, No. 1, in 1804. Piquant, droll, tragic, languid, heroic, and festive describe this irresistible, unjustly neglected music.Judson Griffin and Margaret Ziemnicka, violins Daniel McCarthy, viola, and David Bakamjian, cello

Thursday, January 21, 7:30 PMNEW YORK CLASSICAL QUARTET_2Franz Joseph Haydn—First Master of the Quartet
The 2nd of four Thursday evening concerts of classical string quartet repertory highlights the quartets of Haydn—Quartet in G minor, Op. 20, no. 3, Quartet in C, Op. 33, no.
3 The Bird, Quartet in E flat, Op. 64, no. 6—that form the core of the classical repertoire. Yet many of these masterpieces are seldom heard, though they remain unsurpassed in depth, variety, humor, pathos, and humanity.
Thursday, March 10, 7:30 PMNEW YORK CLASSICAL QUARTET_3Franz Joseph Haydn—Die sieben letzte Wörte
The 3rd Thursday evening concerts of classical string quartet repertory, takes us back to the Cathedral of Cadíz, Spain, for Holy Week 1785. Haydn composed The Seven Last Words of Christ, a work divided into seven sonatas with an opening introduction and a concluding terrifying earthquake. The intimate
medium of the string quartet emphasizes the private response to Christ’s torments, more meditation than literal depiction.
Thursday, April 21, 7:30 PMNEW YORK CLASSICAL QUARTET_4Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart—Dedicated to Haydn
This final Thursday evening concert of classical string quartet repertory presents two of Mozart’s six quartets dedicated to Haydn. Quartet in D minor, KV 421 is the only one in a minor key, and rightly a favorite with its air of tragedy, solace, and mystery.
By contrast, Quartet in D, KV 575, the first of his last three quartets, exhibits a striking new concision, a deceptive air of nonchalance belying its taut construction and economical means.Judson Griffin and Margaret Ziemnicka, violins Daniel McCarthy, viola, and David Bakamjian, cello
