J.C. Leyendecker, Magazine Cover - Leap Year, The Saturday Evening Post, Haggin Museum Collection

This painting by J.C. Leyendecker, originally created for the February 29, 1908 cover for The Saturday Evening Post, will be on display in February celebrating the 2020 Leap Year!

Playing upon the old tradition of unmarried women being encouraged to propose marriage on Leap Year day, Leyendecker featured a bachelorette chasing a terrified cupid in this cover illustration.

Monkeys began as three friends jamming in a Stockton living

room on a Saturday in January of 2015. They played their first gig that spring on the Earth Day stage at Victory

Park. The three had such a great time that they became five. Their eclectic style and infectious vocal harmonies

bring irreverent fun to the stage.

Enjoy a special evening at the Haggin Museum.Events vary each month with special guests, live

music, wine and more!

Grab your friends or make it a date!

THURSDAY, JAN 16 | 7 PMMark & Cindy Lemaire | While fingerstyle guitarist Mark Lemaire’s solo compositions stand as complete statements, his harmonies with Cindy are so perfectly matched that they seem like two people with one voice, creating something both authentic and unique. The couple toured the world, performing last year from New Zealand to Scotland to Canada, as well as here in the states.

THURSDAY, FEB 20 | 7 PMPacific Avenue Clarinets | Five clarinets and an occasional percussionist play original works and transcriptions for clarinet. Performances feature sounds from Coltrane to Bozza. Michael Hernandez, Amanda Martin, Connor Moen, Christina Severin, and Chris Steffanic work together to bring out a unique “sound picture” of every piece; whether the work is jazz oriented, mid-eastern, European, or classical American, every work has a distinctive collage of sounds.

THURSDAY, MAR 5 | 7 PMErnest Troost | “If the Carter

Family, Robbie Robertson, and Alfred Hitchcock wrote songs

together they might sound like this,” says Ernest Troost

of his evocative folk and blues inspired songwriting

and guitar work. An Emmy-award winning film and

television composer, Troost promises pensive, sometimes

snarling but lyrically driven Americana for fans of blues style

guitar picking with timeless stories and colorful character portrayals.

THURSDAY, MAR 19 | 7 PMClaudia Russell & Bruce Kaplan | Claudia Russell and Bruce Kaplan traverse a wide Americana landscape, stopping at wondrous musical landmarks along the way, tipping their hat to string bands, blues divas, jazz cats, Village folkies, Bakersfield cowboys, and Laurel Canyon troubadours. Their performance is served up with a generous helping of homespun humor and shaggy dog stories, making for a heartfelt and humorous evening of deeply engaging music.

DOCENT NEWS

Haggin Museum Docents are a vital part of the Museum’s Education Department and provide support by leading tours for visitors of all ages, participating in community outreach, and volunteering at events. Docents enhance the visitor experience and create connections between the Haggin’s collections and guests.

Our docents participate in both history and art training to prepare for their role at the museum—learning about regional history and the Haggin’s collection of 19th and 20th century art. The next round of docent art training begins late-January, meeting most Tuesdays through early-April. This year’s Art Coordinators are Claudia Collignon and Deb Miles. Both have been working closely with the Haggin’s Education Department to develop the art training and will serve as mentors to the incoming docent trainees.

Have you ever wondered what the docent volunteers do at the Haggin Museum? Have you ever considered becoming a docent volunteer? Now is your chance to learn more about our docent program! Drop by the museum to meet current docents, go on a spotlight tour, experience our Museum2Schools programs, and learn more about what it means to become a docent. The next docent training course begins in January and focuses on the Museum’s art collection, but no prior art knowledge is necessary.

“I have always loved learning about art and history. I was drawn to the Haggin Museum because it provides a unique experience as it brings art and history together in one place,” explains Claudia. “Becoming a

docent is rewarding for me in many ways, but mostly it allows me to share my knowledge and appreciation for art and history with others.”

“Being a docent is multifaceted— I can be a storyteller while leading tours then turn around and socialize with visitors at our late night Thursday events,” says Deb. “I’m looking forward to the docent art training as it gives me joy to share the information I’ve learned about our collection with others.”

the early-90s, is inspired by Lewis Carroll’s classic story Alice in Wonderland. You will be able to meet characters from the book, including Alice, the White Rabbit and the Queen of Hearts; all are brought to life by local drama students.

Tea is served from elegant silver tea services, accompanied by delicious canapés, cookies and other tea time treats prepared by Museum Store Auxiliary members.

This annual event is much anticipated by museum members and sells out, so watch for your invitations during the last week of February and make your reservations promptly.

SPECIAL EXHIBITION

Image captions: (left) SWORD DANCE IN A CAFÉ – A performance by a traveling female dancer known as a Ghawazi, (top right) POLLICE VERSO – Thumbs down for a gladiator in the Colosseum, (bottom right) BASHI-BOUZOUK CHIEFTAN – An Ottoman mercenary with his narghile or water pipe. All prints are part of the Haggin Museum Collection.

The French artist Jean Leon Gérôme (1824-1904) was one of the most popular and wealthy artists of his time. This was

due largely to the subject matter of his paintings and the fact that many of these original works were later reproduced as prints.

He is best known for his re-creations of scenes from classical antiquity and depictions of contemporary historical events and Orientalist scenes. This latter category consisted of works based upon Gérôme’s many trips to both Turkey and Egypt

where he sketched, took photographs and collected costumes and artifacts to help ensure the accuracy of the paintings he would later create in his studio. As his fame grew, Gérôme’s paintings were acquired by wealthy collectors, including the Haggins—five of which are part of the Museum’s collection.

Another collector of Gérôme’s works was the prominent Parisian art dealer Adolphe Goupil, who also ran a publishing company. The two began their collaboration in 1859, with Goupil producing prints of some of the artist’s best known paintings. Made by a process that combined copper plate engraving with photography, these prints preserved the richness and attention to detail that were the hallmarks of Gérôme’s paintings. And because the prints could be purchased for a fraction of an original painting, the artist’s work could now be enjoyed by a much larger audience, both in Europe and the United States. Their business relationship must have been quite an amicable one, for in 1863 Gérôme married Goupil’s daughter, Marie.

A selection of the Museum’s collection of 99 Gérôme/Goupil prints will be on display in the New Gallery beginning Thursday, March 5.

On average, Haggin receives 1,000 pieces of art chosen by the teachers as the best in their class. The Museum’s Tuleburg and West galleries will be filled with two- and three-dimensional art works created in crayon, colored pencil, pastel, watercolor, oil and acrylic paint, photography, and other mediums.

This year the Museum will hold a welcome reception for students, their families, and teachers on February 22nd. This event is FREE to everyone and sponsored by the Junior Women’s Group of the Haggin Museum who will provide punch and cookies to the guests.
