What are context clues?

Context clues are words in the sentence orparagraph that help readers understand what

the author means Context clues can be:

Synonyms or antonyms used in the sentence

Apposition (The word is defined in the sentence)

Examples used in the sentence



Part of Speech

Another helpful way to tell the meaning of aword is to determine the part of speech

Ask yourself, is this word A noun?

A verb?

An adjective?

An adverb?



Nouns

A person, place, thing, or idea Examples:

man, boy, girl, dog, Maryland, country, box, desk, chair,imagination, happiness



Verb

Words that tell what a noun does

Action words

Examples: run, glitter, slide, dance, write



Adjectives

Words that describe nouns

Tell color, size, what kind, and how many

Examples: four, blue, large, beautiful, lazy,boring, sleepy



Adverbs

Tell when, where,, or to what extent

Often have the ly suffix

Examples:

Quickly, low, carefully, hard, fast, slow

Suppose you read this sentence:
