Keynote Speaker Martin Mares ndash Ivy League Project

Martin Mares is the Chief Executive Officer and President of the Ivy League Leadership Project

He has been in education for over 25 years serving as a teacher administrator mentor and

advisor He is passionate about student empowerment and teaching students the importance

of leadership skills during monthly Saturday seminars He believes that it is imperative that

students develop a ldquoSense of Possibilityrdquo He has developed Ivy League Projects in California

Arizona Texas and New Mexico A total of over 128 students from economically challenged

communities have been accepted to east coast universities during the past 19 years Many have

been accepted to Harvard Yale Princeton MIT and countless hundreds accepted to West

Coast universities Martin is writing his book entitled ldquoFrom Grape Vines to Ivy Leaguesrdquo Martin is married to Sulema

Mares They have three children named Andres Jacqueline and Izabela

Marcela is 22 years old and lives in Madera California She currently is a sen-

ior at Fresno State She is working in her BA in Liberal Studies She wants to

be a bilingual teacher to help students to succeed in school at the same time

as they continue with their values and culture

Deina Velez

Im Deina Velez I am 22 years old and I live in Visalia CA I am currently

student teaching in a Kindergarten class in Visalia I will receive my BCLAD

credential in December 2010 I hope to teach 3rd or 4th grade

Playing the marimba has been a family tradition for the Olais women It began in the late 70rsquos with three sisters learning through the City of Fresno Parks and Rec-reation Department and continued with private lessons and influences from well known local mariachimusic instructors Tony Manjarrez Danny Fraijo and also through the Roosevelt School of the Arts Marimba Band instructed by Steve Al-cala Today we are passing down this tradition to our children in hopes that it will carry on for years to come

We play a purely instrumental eclectic repertoire of songs which resonate beauti-fully from this amazing instrument from cumbias to polkas to corridos to boleros Our unique style spotlights the melody of a song on the high register of the instru-ment while following the undertone of the bass line

Escuela Normal de Los Angeles

I expect that I am the last remaining alumnus of the old Spanish Escuela Normal de Los Angeles I attended there in

1863 when I was eleven years of age and was one of the youngest students in the school I was in the school until 1865

The school closed just after I left If any others of those students still are living [1936] they probably are ninety or more

years of age

The Principal of the old school was Sr Juan Manuel Silvas of Concepcion Chile The second in rank was Candido Fraijo of

Spain and the third was Francisco Escanillo from Andalucia Spain Understand theirs was not a church school It was a

tuition school They taught us French Spanish English Italian mathematics and bookkeeping Our parents paid three

hundred dollars a year for our board lodging and instruction

School was held where the southeast corner of Main and Castelar streets are now three or four blocks east of the old

church on the Plaza

Keynote Speaker Martin Mares ndash Ivy League Project

Martin Mares is the Chief Executive Officer and President of the Ivy League Leadership Project

He has been in education for over 25 years serving as a teacher administrator mentor and

advisor He is passionate about student empowerment and teaching students the importance

of leadership skills during monthly Saturday seminars He believes that it is imperative that

students develop a ldquoSense of Possibilityrdquo He has developed Ivy League Projects in California

Arizona Texas and New Mexico A total of over 128 students from economically challenged

communities have been accepted to east coast universities during the past 19 years Many have

been accepted to Harvard Yale Princeton MIT and countless hundreds accepted to West

Coast universities Martin is writing his book entitled ldquoFrom Grape Vines to Ivy Leaguesrdquo Martin is married to Sulema

Mares They have three children named Andres Jacqueline and Izabela

Marcela is 22 years old and lives in Madera California She currently is a sen-

ior at Fresno State She is working in her BA in Liberal Studies She wants to

be a bilingual teacher to help students to succeed in school at the same time

Im Deina Velez I am 22 years old and I live in Visalia CA I am currently

student teaching in a Kindergarten class in Visalia I will receive my BCLAD

credential in December 2010 I hope to teach 3rd or 4th grade

Playing the marimba has been a family tradition for the Olais women It began in the late 70rsquos with three sisters learning through the City of Fresno Parks and Rec-reation Department and continued with private lessons and influences from well known local mariachimusic instructors Tony Manjarrez Danny Fraijo and also through the Roosevelt School of the Arts Marimba Band instructed by Steve Al-cala Today we are passing down this tradition to our children in hopes that it will carry on for years to come

We play a purely instrumental eclectic repertoire of songs which resonate beauti-fully from this amazing instrument from cumbias to polkas to corridos to boleros Our unique style spotlights the melody of a song on the high register of the instru-ment while following the undertone of the bass line

I expect that I am the last remaining alumnus of the old Spanish Escuela Normal de Los Angeles I attended there in

1863 when I was eleven years of age and was one of the youngest students in the school I was in the school until 1865

The school closed just after I left If any others of those students still are living [1936] they probably are ninety or more

years of age

The Principal of the old school was Sr Juan Manuel Silvas of Concepcion Chile The second in rank was Candido Fraijo of

Spain and the third was Francisco Escanillo from Andalucia Spain Understand theirs was not a church school It was a

tuition school They taught us French Spanish English Italian mathematics and bookkeeping Our parents paid three

hundred dollars a year for our board lodging and instruction

School was held where the southeast corner of Main and Castelar streets are now three or four blocks east of the old

church on the Plaza

Martin Mares is the Chief Executive Officer and President of the Ivy League Leadership Project

He has been in education for over 25 years serving as a teacher administrator mentor and

advisor He is passionate about student empowerment and teaching students the importance

of leadership skills during monthly Saturday seminars He believes that it is imperative that

students develop a ldquoSense of Possibilityrdquo He has developed Ivy League Projects in California

Arizona Texas and New Mexico A total of over 128 students from economically challenged

Im Deina Velez I am 22 years old and I live in Visalia CA I am currently

Playing the marimba has been a family tradition for the Olais women It began in the late 70rsquos with three sisters learning through the City of Fresno Parks and Rec-reation Department and continued with private lessons and influences from well known local mariachimusic instructors Tony Manjarrez Danny Fraijo and also through the Roosevelt School of the Arts Marimba Band instructed by Steve Al-cala Today we are passing down this tradition to our children in hopes that it will carry on for years to come

I expect that I am the last remaining alumnus of the old Spanish Escuela Normal de Los Angeles I attended there in

1863 when I was eleven years of age and was one of the youngest students in the school I was in the school until 1865

The school closed just after I left If any others of those students still are living [1936] they probably are ninety or more

years of age

The Principal of the old school was Sr Juan Manuel Silvas of Concepcion Chile The second in rank was Candido Fraijo of

Spain and the third was Francisco Escanillo from Andalucia Spain Understand theirs was not a church school It was a

tuition school They taught us French Spanish English Italian mathematics and bookkeeping Our parents paid three

hundred dollars a year for our board lodging and instruction

Martin Mares is the Chief Executive Officer and President of the Ivy League Leadership Project

He has been in education for over 25 years serving as a teacher administrator mentor and

of leadership skills during monthly Saturday seminars He believes that it is imperative that

students develop a ldquoSense of Possibilityrdquo He has developed Ivy League Projects in California

Arizona Texas and New Mexico A total of over 128 students from economically challenged

communities have been accepted to east coast universities during the past 19 years Many have

Playing the marimba has been a family tradition for the Olais women It began in the late 70rsquos with three sisters learning through the City of Fresno Parks and Rec-reation Department and continued with private lessons and influences from well known local mariachimusic instructors Tony Manjarrez Danny Fraijo and also through the Roosevelt School of the Arts Marimba Band instructed by Steve Al-cala Today we are passing down this tradition to our children in hopes that it will carry on for years to come

I expect that I am the last remaining alumnus of the old Spanish Escuela Normal de Los Angeles I attended there in

1863 when I was eleven years of age and was one of the youngest students in the school I was in the school until 1865

The school closed just after I left If any others of those students still are living [1936] they probably are ninety or more

years of age

The Principal of the old school was Sr Juan Manuel Silvas of Concepcion Chile The second in rank was Candido Fraijo of

Spain and the third was Francisco Escanillo from Andalucia Spain Understand theirs was not a church school It was a

tuition school They taught us French Spanish English Italian mathematics and bookkeeping Our parents paid three

hundred dollars a year for our board lodging and instruction

School was held where the southeast corner of Main and Castelar streets are now three or four blocks east of the old

church on the Plaza

I expect that I am the last remaining alumnus of the old Spanish Escuela Normal de Los Angeles I attended there in

1863 when I was eleven years of age and was one of the youngest students in the school I was in the school until 1865

The school closed just after I left If any others of those students still are living [1936] they probably are ninety or more

years of age

The Principal of the old school was Sr Juan Manuel Silvas of Concepcion Chile The second in rank was Candido Fraijo of

Spain and the third was Francisco Escanillo from Andalucia Spain Understand theirs was not a church school It was a

tuition school They taught us French Spanish English Italian mathematics and bookkeeping Our parents paid three

hundred dollars a year for our board lodging and instruction

Keynote Speaker Martin Mares ndash Ivy League Project

Martin Mares is the Chief Executive Officer and President of the Ivy League Leadership Project

He has been in education for over 25 years serving as a teacher administrator mentor and

advisor He is passionate about student empowerment and teaching students the importance

of leadership skills during monthly Saturday seminars He believes that it is imperative that

students develop a ldquoSense of Possibilityrdquo He has developed Ivy League Projects in California

Arizona Texas and New Mexico A total of over 128 students from economically challenged

communities have been accepted to east coast universities during the past 19 years Many have

been accepted to Harvard Yale Princeton MIT and countless hundreds accepted to West

Coast universities Martin is writing his book entitled ldquoFrom Grape Vines to Ivy Leaguesrdquo Martin is married to Sulema

Mares They have three children named Andres Jacqueline and Izabela

Marcela is 22 years old and lives in Madera California She currently is a sen-

Im Deina Velez I am 22 years old and I live in Visalia CA I am currently

student teaching in a Kindergarten class in Visalia I will receive my BCLAD

credential in December 2010 I hope to teach 3rd or 4th grade

Playing the marimba has been a family tradition for the Olais women It began in the late 70rsquos with three sisters learning through the City of Fresno Parks and Rec-reation Department and continued with private lessons and influences from well known local mariachimusic instructors Tony Manjarrez Danny Fraijo and also through the Roosevelt School of the Arts Marimba Band instructed by Steve Al-cala Today we are passing down this tradition to our children in hopes that it will carry on for years to come

We play a purely instrumental eclectic repertoire of songs which resonate beauti-fully from this amazing instrument from cumbias to polkas to corridos to boleros Our unique style spotlights the melody of a song on the high register of the instru-ment while following the undertone of the bass line
