CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1Background of the study

One of the mandates of higher education institutions (HEIs) such as the Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST) is to offer higher technological, professional and advanced instruction in science and technology. In order to fulfill its mandates, MUST is offering various technology degree program such as automotive technology.

Automotive technology is rapidly growing in terms of new equipment and special tools that can now be used in any automotive shop for repairing jobs and for the maintenance of an automobile cars, thus there is indeed a need to provide intensive career preparation through a combination of classroom instruction and hands- on practice. Automotive technicians and automotive student execute vehicle repairs such as oil change and diagnose complex problem.

In order to diagnose complex problems the automotive student is in need of equipment such as hydraulic jack. This jack is one of the best equipment used in automotive works to lift and pull down an automotive transmission and under chassis parts. This equipment is convenient and easy to use without using much force in removing and replacing transmission and under chassis parts. More powerful car jack used hydraulic cylinder to provide capacity for lifting higher loads over a greater capacity. This jack are rated on the basis of maximum lifting capacity and generally mentioned in tons 1.5 to 2 tons. Also this device can perform changing tires, lifting and pulling car differential, and other specific jobs because this jack has multi tasking capability.

The difference between the existing hydraulic jacks is directly connection to the lifting arm while the new innovation use bracket and sliding guide connected to the lifting arm.Based on the evaluation that we gathered from the existing one we come-up to an idea to the existing one to our desired design to have a Multi Feature Automotive Jack use on the laboratory shop. The hydraulic jack is basic needs to the automotive task; it helps to listen the range of time of the technician during working.

1.2Statement of the problemMUST and other colleges, universities and vocational schools here in Cagayan de Oro City offering automotive technology courses are experiencing lack of special tools in the laboratory. The lack of special tools for shop work causes difficulty in automotive services and repair jobs. This situation has prompted the researchers to design and develop a automotive multi feature jack to aid the students in their laboratory activities. The design and development of the automotive multi feature jack sought to answer the following concern;a. What are the factors to be considered in the design of the jack?b. What are the parts, components and its specification in order to come-up with a automotive multi feature jack?c. What are the criteria needed in the evaluation on the performance of the jack?

1.3Objective of the studyThe objective of this study is to design and develop an automotive multi feature jack that will provide a comfortable, convenience and easy to use in removing or replacing under chassis parts, and to minimize the range of time and lessen the exertion of force in removing or replacing transmission and under chassis parts.

Specific objective1. To design an automotive multi feature jack. 2. To develop and fabricate an automotive multi feature jack. 3.To evaluate an automotive multi feature jack in terms of the following criteria; a. Functionalityb. Aestheticc. Cost effectiveness d. Safety

1.4Significance of the studyThe availability of the automotive multi feature jack will provide automotive and mechanical students in their field to easy manipulate a specific task especially in removing or replacing transmission and under chassis parts. It will also help automotive instructors to demonstrate during their actual practice.

1.5Scope and LimitationThe researcher focused only for lifting and pulling down the automotive transmission and under chassis parts, this jack is limited only for small car with the capacity of 2 tons, Also this research will also serve as an instructional device in automotive laboratory.

CHAPTER IIREVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

These chapter present ideas gleaned from related literature, studies and other sources that deal similarly with the problem of the studyPascal (1653), stated that when there is an increase in pressure at any point in a container of fluid, there is an equal increase in pressure at every other point in the container. This fluid exerts pressure in all directions within the jack. This fluid can transfer a small amount of force created by the jack operator to a much greater amount of force that can lift up any object. A hydraulic jack has many elements such as pump motor, water tank, check valve, tube, piston and the release valve. The hydraulic fluid is found on the reservoir and pump motor can get the water up. This can then create as tress as it shoves the water on the check valve. The fluid will go to the primary cylinder and it willpower the piston. One of the most widespread jacks is situated in the car which is used when changing wheels. They may be very easy to use as compared to the screw jacks. Hydraulics created a lasting influence on the life of people.

Richard Dudgeon (1851), a Scottish machinist who emigrated to the U.S., invented the hydraulic jack. He set up a machinist's shop in New York City. The hydraulic jack is just one of the many significant inventions of Dudgeon. In 1851, he was given a patent for the invention. The U.S. Postal Service issued a stamp in his honor recognizing his contribution to industrial advancement.Jason Miller (2000), stated that the tool that is most required by all workshops that are serious about carrying out repairs on a wide variety of vehicles is the standard transmission jack. These flexible and versatile lifting systems have many uses, and are essential for a wide range of different repair and servicing jobs.Unlike a conventional jack, which raises a vehicle using either the chassis, or the axles, a transmission jack is positioned centrally, and lifts the transmission. Generally, the procedure for removing a transmission or gear box from a vehicle begins with positioning the transmission jack under the box. It is then raised to take the weight of the transmission, so that it can be safely detached from the engine block. Once this has been achieved, the jack can be raised the rest of the way up in order to allow the complete removal of the transmission ready for servicing.

A unit like the OTC 1728 jack is perfectly suited to such tasks. It is small enough to be easily moved around by a single mechanic, and yet hard wearing enough to be used every day without fear of failure. The unit comes with a lifetime guarantee, and thanks to its precision construction is a very reliable tool.As with all tools, the OTC 1728 Transmission jack is designed with a specific purpose in mind, and features many enhancements to a basic design to make it easy to use. A gas lift piston to raise the transmission block when the jack is in use is combined with a manual release for easy detachment when the job is complete, and in use, the OTC 1728 is intended to be as simple as possible.

R C Rosignol, B.S., Physics Teacher, Pace High School, Brownsville, TX (2001),Hydraulic jacks and much other technological advancement such as automobile brakes and dental chairs work on the basis of Pascal's Principle, named for Blaise Pascal, who lived in the seventeenth century. Basically, the principle states that the pressure in a closed container is the same at all points. Pressure is described mathematically by a Force divided by Area. Therefore if you have two cylinders connected together, a small one and a large one, and apply a small Force to the small cylinder, this would result in a given pressure. By Pascal's Principle, this pressure would be the same in the larger cylinder, but since the larger cylinder has more area, the force emitted by the second cylinder would be greater. This is represented by rearranging the pressure formula P = F/A, to F = PA. The pressure stayed the same in the second cylinder, but Area was increased, resulting in a larger Force. The greater the differences in the areas of the cylinders, the greater the potential force output of the big cylinder. A hydraulic jack is simply two cylinders connected as described above.

CHAPTER IIIMETHODOLOGYIn this chapter the various activities necessary in the conduct of the design mechanism are discussed.

3.1 Design of the deviceThis study considers an automotive multi feature jack that is ideal for the laboratory use. Figure 1 and 2 show the perspective and right side view of the device.

Figure 1.Perspective view of the device

The figure shows the complete assembly and parts of the device the bracket used to hold the sliding guide and the metal frame, sliding guide used to connect to the lifting arm, hydraulic jack used to push the lifting arm going up, lifting arm used to carry loads up and down position, link used to support the lifting arm, round bar used to connect the upper whole of the lifting arm for the fixed position and both end of it is being lock by lock pin, transmission pad used to hold transmission engine, caster used to support the assembly and for easy to transferred from one place to another.Figure 2.Right side view of the device

The figure shows the dimensions of the height of the front wheel 3 the length of transmission pad is 8 the length of the frame is 21x18 and the height of the back side is 5. the caster is used to support the assembly and easily transfer from one place to another. The handle is used to pump the hydraulic jack and for transferring to any direction.

Figure 3.Top view of the device This figure shows the metal sheet, the handle, rear caster, lifting arm, link, transmission pad front caster and its dimension of length of the jack which is 39 and the width have a 9.

Figure4. Front view of the deviceThis figure shows the dimension of the height of the handle which is 37and the inside parts of the device

Figure 5 Isometric right side view linkage of the deviceThis figure shows the isometric linkages right side view of the device and the inside parts which are the rear caster, bracket, sliding guide, handle, lifting arm, link, saddle carrier and the transmission pad.

Figure 6. Isometric left side view linkages of the deviceThis figure shows the isometric view of the left side view linkages of the device and the inside parts which are the rear caster, release valve, bracket, sliding guide, handle, lifting arm, link, saddle carrier, and the transmission pad.

Figure 7 Schematic diagram of hydraulic jackThis figure shows the schematic diagram of the hydraulic jack with the example of the hand force of 150mm and the load of 350kg showing the operation with all the parts of the jack which are the which oil bleed valve, oil tank, load piston, atmosphere pressure; pump piston, and the check valve 1 and 2.

A basic hydraulic jack has a lot of goal.A multiplication of forcecan be achieved by the application of fluid pressure according toPascals principle, which for the two pistons impliesP1= P2This allows the lifting of a heavy load with a small force, as in an auto hydraulic lift, but of course there can be no multiplication of work, so in an ideal case with no frictional loss:

Winput= Woutput

Calculation:

For example, if the lift cylinder were 25 cm in diameter and the small cylinder were 1.25 cm in diameter, then the ratio of the areas is 400, so the hydraulic press arrangement gives a multiplication of 400 times the force. To lift a 6000 newton car, you would have to exert only 6000 N/400 = 15 N on the fluid in the small cylinder to lift the car. However, to lift the car 10 cm, you would have to move the oil 400 x 10cm = 40 meters. This is practical by pumping oil into this small cylinder with a small compressor.

3.2 Prototype developmentIn the development and construction of the automotive multi feature jack, the following parts are needed a hacksaw, hammer, pull push rule, marker, file, wrenches, electric drill, drill press, vise grip, benches vise, grinder, and welding machine are the tools used to construct the Automotive multi feature jack.In the implementation, the flat bars, pipe and round bars are measured to their desired length and cut using hacksaw and holes are drilled in the flat bars and round bars in order to attach the holes and by the use of pin or lack nut. In order to fabricate the metal frame, the cut flat bars and round bars are joined using electric arc welding machine. The welded surface is grind using portable electric grinder to smoothen the base surface. The caster wheels are attached to the base and the newly fabricated base is painted.

APPENDIX BMAINTENANCE AND OPERATING MANUAL OF THE HYDRAULIC JACK

MAINTAINING OIL LEVEL

Important: When adding or replacing oil, ALWAYS use good grade Hydraulic Jack oil. DO NOT use Hydraulic Brake Fluid, Alcohol, Glycerin, and Detergent, Motor Oil or dirty oil. Use of an improper uid can cause serious internal damage to your jack.

ADDING OIL Position the jack on level ground and fully lower the saddle. Remove oil ller plug from the reservoir. Oil should be lled to the level of about 3/16 above the inner cylinder as seen from the oil ller hole. If low, add oil as needed. Re-install oil ller plug. The jack is now ready to use.LUBRICATION Add lubricating oil to all moving parts as needed.

PREVENTING RUST Check ram and pump plunger every few months for any signs of rust or corrosion. Clean as needed by wiping with an oily cloth. When not in use, ALWAYS store jack with saddle lowered all the way down.

ANNUAL INSPECTIONTo ensure that it is in optimum condition, annual inspection of the jack at a Sears Service Center is recommended.

REPLACING OIL To drain oil, remove oil ller screw and open release valve. Turn jack over and drain old oil out through the oil ller hole. Note: Dispose of hydraulic oil in accordance with local regulations. Rell with new oil through the oil ller hole. DO NOT allow dirt or foreign material to enter the hydraulic system when lling. After relling, remove any air from the hydraulic system by opening the release valve and rapidly pumping the jack handle several times. Re-install oil ller screw and the jack are ready to use.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

Lifting1. Place vehicle in park, with emergency brake on and wheels securely chocked to prevent inadvertent vehicle movement.2. Locate and close release valve by turning handle clockwise until firm resistance is felt to further thread engagement. Center jack saddle under proper lift point.3. Insert handle into handle sleeve and pump to contact lift point. Verify the lift point, then pump the handle until load reaches desired height.4. Transfer the load immediately to a pair of appropriately rated jack stands.

Lowering1.Raise load high enough to clear the jack stands; then carefully remove jack stands (always used in pairs).2.Slowly turn the handle counter-clockwise, but no more than 1/2 full turn. If the load fails to lower: a. Use another jack to raise the vehicle high enough to reinstall jack stands. b. Remove the affected jack and then the stands. c. Using the other jack, lower the load by turning the operating handle counter-clockwise, but no more than 1/2 full turn.3.After removing jack from under the load, push saddle down to reduce ram exposure to rust and contamination.
