Course DescriptionThis course is designed to introduce new professionals to international import. The training program is to prepare persons in entry-level administrative positions for careers supporting customs brokerage functions and international trade. The program will provide participants with the soft skills and technical training to be able to function successfully as an import administrator, as a first step toward a career in international trade, and can be an excellent refresher course for anyone involved in international import and trade matters.

Course ObjectivesUpon successful completion (obtaining a 75% or greater final grade) of The ABC’s of Customs Brokerage, students should be able to: Provide excellent customs service displaying quality soft skills Understand Antitrust laws and their importance in industry meetings Proper conduct to professionally interact with all cultures Calculate duties, currency, and dimension of cargo Identify countries with US preferential and free trade agreements Know the importers responsibility versus the brokers responsibility Comprehend the rules and regulations involved in international import

Students must make 75% or greater on their final grade to receive an ABC’s of Customs Brokerage certificate and to be eligible to sit for the Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) exam.

Due Dates and Late PenaltiesAll assignments are due no later than the last day of each class week; therefore a Tuesday to Monday week would require all assignments to be due by midnight of each Monday.

All initial post with the discussion forums are due no later than the fourth day of the class week. Students are encouraged to post early and post often in order to ensure quality interaction throughout the week.

Late Penalties:- Assignments submitted within 24 hours past the due date will have a

10% late penalty of the final assignment grade- Assignments submitted within 48 hours past the due date will have a

20% late penalty of the final assignment grade- Assignments submitted beyond 48 hours will not be accepted

Rubric Descriptions Discussion Forums

- These forums are used to help promote enhanced comprehension and critical thinking. Your overall quality of the class is highly dependent on the interactions in the discussions.

- It is helpful to identify what you are responding to in the forum, therefore you are encouraged to include your fellow classmates comment in your reply.

- Content used in these forums must include quality analysis and development of the topic.

- Disagreement is permitted, but must be done with complete respect and recognition of the other opinion. It is always the best scenario to provide support for your statement.

- Your initial posting should be 200-300 words.- Your replies should be 50+ words.- See Discussion Board Etiquette by the University of Wisconsin-

Paper Writing/Assignments- There will be occasions when the student will have to prepare a

written paper. Resources used should be government sites, or other scholarly, industry or regulatory sources. Wikipedia should not be used.

- Form completions will be done electronically and will be submitted in PDF format.

- Assignments should be labeled as follows: The first letter of your first name, your last name, the week and lesson number. (eg DMullins_week1_lesson3)

Student Expectations Submit assignments on time. Discuss alternatives with your facilitator

before the due date if it is known that the assignment cannot be submitted on time.

Disagreement with a facilitator should be handled privately and respectfully.

Participation is determined by activity in course discussions and submitted assignments. Please note that an absence is defined as a complete lack of involvement in discussions and submitted exercises.

Facilitator ExpectationsInstructor will be available by phone and email to address any student inquiries. Responses to voicemail and email inquiries will occur within 24 hours unless otherwise notified via Announcements. Instructor will respond to forum postings daily. Instructor will be engaged in the discussion forum throughout the

week. Instructor will provide meaningful feedback for all drop box

submissions. Instructor will provide track changes and the rubric indicating what

was earned for all papers. Weekly grades and feedback for assignments submitted on time will

be returned within 5-7 days of the due date.

The Final Grade for the course will be provided to the registrar within 14 days of the course’s last day.
