1ChapterIntroduction

"Sauti Ya Bilal" a Swahili periodical of Bilal Muslim Mission of Tanzania, has been generallyacknowledgedasoneofthemostinformativeandcomprehensivereligiousperiodicalsinEastAfrica.In1968, the Mission gave a detailed treatment to the subject of 'Khatm an-Nubuwwah'(Finality ofProphethood), in the formof threearticleswhichappeared in threeconsecutive issues.Nowonder theserieswaswell-receivedby.thereaders-learnedandlaymenalike.ThatMuhammad (S), the Holy Prophet of Islam, was the last Prophet, and that nobodywas to get

Prophethoodafterhim, isasimpleyetcardinalbeliefofeveryMuslim.TheMissionhadexplained thatIslamic belief in those Swahili articles, quoting verses from Qur'an, and traditions from varioustraditionalistsincorroboration.A Qadiani missionary wrote a long letter in Swahili, making a frustrated attempt to object to the

contentsofthosearticles.ThisletterwasansweredbySayyidSa’eedAkhtarRizvi,ChiefMissionary.Astherewas no reply forthcoming from the saidmissionary, silence prevailed. However, a ShiaAfricanstudentlateronwrotetoMr.RizviseekingclarificationsoverthebeliefofKhatman-Nubuwwah;andinthat letter certain passageswere found to bear great similarity to the previous letter from theQadianimissionary.Obviously, theQadianiswerecirculating their letterorperhapspropagating its contents, despite the

(B)EvolutionofReligiousGuidance

ItappearsfromthehistoryofdivinereligionsthatGodsentfromtimetotimemany 'Shari'ahs' (DivineLaws) which were suitable to that particular era. Prophet Noah (a.s.) brought a Shari'ah which wassimpletoagreatextent.AndthatShari'ahwasfollowedbyotherprophetsup to theadventofProphetAbraham (a.s.). Prophet Abraham (a.s.) was given a Shari'ah which was more elaborate and morecomprehensivethanthepreviousone.TheShari'ahofProphetAbrahamremainedinforceforthechildrenofIsraeluptothetimeofProphet

Moses(a.s.).WhenProphetMoses(p.uh.)wasgivenTorah(Law), itwasareallycomprehensiveandfullydetailedShari'ah,whichwas followedbyall theprophetsofBani Israel tillProphet Jesus (a.s.)came.ProphetJesus(a.s.)perfectedtheShari'ahofProphetMoses(a.s.)andmadeadjustmentsaccordingto the time.The,Shari'ahofProphetJesus(a.s.) remainedvalid till thearrivalof theHolyProphetofIslam(S).ComingtotheotherbranchofthefamilyofProphetAbraham(a.s.)wefindthatthechildrenofIsmael

wereexpected to follow theShari'ahofProphetAbraham(a.s.)up to the timeof theHolyProphetofIslam, Prophet Muhammad Al-Mustafa (S). When he came, he abrogated and cancelled all theprevious Shari'ahs, and brought the final, most comprehensive and most suitable andmoderateShari'ahofall, whichcanmeetthechallengeofthechangingtrineswithoutanydifficultyuptotheDayof'Qiyamah(theDayofResurrection).

(C)Why'Shari'ahs'wereChanged?

Itmaybeasked:WhythechangesinShari'ahs?Whythegradualrevelation?Andwhytheseparate'Ulul-Azm'(Prominent)prophetscomingoneafteranother?Well,whenachildisborn,theparentsmakesomegarmentsforhim.Andasthechildcontinuestogrow,theoldclothesarediscarded,andnewonesmadeaccording to the growth of the body of the child, this continuous during his childhood, during hisadolescence, during his teenage, till a time comes after 25 or 30 years, when the body reaches itsmaximumheightandattainsitsfullgrowth.Afterthat,thesizewhichfitshimatthattimecontinuestofithimuptotheendofhislife.Nobodywill

suggest thatas thechildat theageof25years isexpected tobe5 ft.6 in. tall, heshouldbegiven theclothes of that size on the day of his birth. Nor will anybody think that a young man of 30 yearsshouldwear the same clothes which he used to wear when he was 10 years old. Likewise, wemaysupposethatthehumanitywasachildinthedaysofProphetAdam(a.s.)andNoah(a.s.),whichreachedits adolescence in the days of Prophet Abraham (a.s.) and continued to grow (mentally, socially andspiritually).Accordingly,AllahcontinueddiscardingandabrogatingoldShari'ahsandsendingnewonesaccordingtothesocial,intellectualandspiritualneedsofthetimes.ThiscontinueduptothetimeofProphetMuhammadAl-Mustafa(S).Thistimemaybecomparedasthe

ageof25or30yearsofamanwhenhereachesthefullheightandthehighestpeakofhisstrength.Nowthereisnochancethathewilloutgrowhisclothes,andthesizeofwhatageremainsinforcetillhislastday.Whenhumanityreachedthatstage,AllahsentthefinalShari'ahwhichwastoservethemankindtothelastdayoftheworld.AfterMuhammadAl-Mustafa(S)therewasnoneedforanyShari'ah;therewasnoneed foranynewProphetormessenger fromGod.And itwas for this reason thathewasdeclaredbyAllahtobethelastoftheprophets.Question: Admitted that the body does not grow in height after about 25 years; but still

there appear changes in the body.A personmay gain or lose considerableweight, necessitating somechangesinthemeasurementofhisclothes. Therefore, nowcanyousaythattherewillneverbeanyneedforanewShari'ahafterIslam?Answer:Clothesusuallydonotadjust themselvesaccording to thebuildofabody. But Islamhasa

built-incapacitytocoverallthepossiblesituationswhichamanfacesduringhislife-time.Inthisrespect,we may compare it with those sophisticated electronic devices which automatically adjust to thetemperature, light, humidityandotherrelevantfactorsof theoperatingtime.Ifyoutakeagoodcamera,youwillfindthatitslensmakesallthenecessaryadjustmentsaccordingtothedistanceandlightwithoutanyneedforyoutomakethoseadjustmentsmanually.Likewise, Islam has all the rules for all the possible situations, and as soon as a given situation

changes,theShari'ah'automaticallyrecognizesthechangeandanothersetofrulesapplicabletothenewsituationcomesintoforceimmediatelyandautomatically.ThisflexibilityistheuniquefeatureofIslamwhichisnotfoundinanyotherreligion.Andthisfeature

reformer affects the frontiersof the faithof Islam.Unfortunately thisquestiondoes arise in connectionwiththeteachingsofQadianism"."Theologically the doctrine is that. The organization called "Islam" is perfect and eternal. No

revelation the denial of which entails heresy is possible after Muhammad. He who claims such arevelation,isatraitortoIslam.SincetheQadianisbelievethefounderoftheAhmadiyyamovementtobethebearerofsucharevelationtheydeclarethattheentireworldofIslamisinfidel.Thefounder'sownargument is that thespiritualityof theHolyProphetof Islammustberegardedas

Thisis,infact,theacceptedbeliefoftheQadianis.Reallyitisastoundingthatwhilethedistinctionof

beingthelastoftheProphetsisdeniedtotheProphetofIslam,itisclaimedfortheprophetofQadian.MirzaGhulamAhmadhimselfsays:"Iamthelastpathofallthedivinepaths,andthelastlightofallthedivinelights".Elaboratingonthistheme,the"Tash-hizul-azhan"[1]writes:"Inthis'Ummah'therecanbeonlyoneprophet,thatis,thepromisedMessiah;andcertainlynobodyelsecancome.The same magazine[2] says: "After the Holy Prophet of Islam only one prophet can come. Prophet of Islam) has said "LaNabiyvaBa'adi".There is no prophet after me; and thus has clearlydeclared that in thisUmmahnoprophetormessengerofGodcancomeafterhim, except thepromisedMessiah".Thisdistorted logic isbeyondhumancomprehension.TheQadianiwriteraccepts theHolyProphet's

declaration that there would be no prophet after him: and then (instead of refuting the claim of anypretender of prophethood after Muhammad) adds a tail to the interpretation: "except Mirza GhulamAhmad.""Tash-hizulAzhan"wasamagazineforAhmadichildrenandthatisthebeliefwhichistaughttotheir

for the Qadianis, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad is the last of the prophets. But there is one "Khatam un-Nabiyyin" (theLastof theProphets) inboth religions, in thesenseof the finalityof theprophethood. Ithink this point of agreement should be enough to end the controversy about the meaning of thephrase"Khatamun-Nabiyyin".Now,toreverttoDr.Iqbal'swriting:"Far from understanding the cultural value of the Islamic idea of finality in the history ofmankind

generallyandofAsiaespeciallyhe(i.e.,MirzaGhulamAhmad)thinksthatthefinalityinthesensethatnofollower of Muhammad can ever reach the status of prophethood is a mark of imperfection inMuhammad'sProphethood. As I read thepsychologyofhismindhe in the interestofhisownclaim toprophethood, avails himself of whathe describes as the creative spirituality of the Holy Prophet ofIslamandatthesametimedeprivestheHolyProphetofhis"finality"bylimitingthecreatingcapacityofhis spirituality to the rearingofonlyoneprophet, i.e., the founderof theAhmadiyyamovement. Qadianis'Excuse

A.Qadianimissionarywrote tome about this tradition but this prophecywas already fulfilled beforeMirzaGhulamAhmadQadiani.Thebook'Al-Bakara'p.15.saysthat"IfwecountallthosewhoclaimedProphethoodaftertheHolyProphetuptoourtime,thisnumberhasbeencompleted.Anditisknowntoallthosewhoknowthehistory."Thewriterofthisbookdiedin828Hijri.Uptothisyear(i.e.,1390)562yearshavepassedsincethatwriting.Doyouthinkthatwriterwaswrong'?"I wrote to him: "Well, what book is this 'Al Bakara''? Who was its author? This clutching to

straws shows how poor your arguments are. Of course, he was wrong, because centuries after him,NawwabSiddiqHassanKhanofBhopal(whodiedin1889A.D.),wroteinhisbook'Hujajul-Karamah'.The prophecy of theHoly Prophet - that therewould come 30Dajjals in thisUmmah - is proving

correct;and27ofthoseDajjalshavealreadyappeared."(page540).Rememberthatthiscountof27wasbeforetheclaimofMirzaGhulamAhmadQadiani.Sometimes,somewritershavecommittedthemistakeofcountingeveryonewhoclaimedprophethood

aftertheHolyProphetasoneofthose30promisedDajjals.Butitiswrong,becauseinthiswaywewillfindhundredsofDajjalandthenumber30wouldbeexceededbyfar.That iswhy Imam IbnHajar Asqalani has written in 'Fat'h-ul·Bari Sharh Saheeh Bukhari (Vol. VI,

p455): "It is not themeaning of this tradition to count every personwho claimed to be prophet afterMuhammad(S);becausethereweresomanyofthemthattheycannotbecounted;asmostlysuchclaimantssuffer from insanity and·'Sawda.".[16] But this traditionmeans only thosewho get some strength i.e.,whosereligionbecomesacceptedandwhogetssufficientfollowers".Therefore,ifweaddonemoreafter1889,thetotalcomesto28.Therearestilltwomoretocome.ThenwecometothepublicdeclarationofAmir-ul-Mu'mineenImamAliibnAbiTalib(a.s.),whichis

given in Al-Iqd-ul-Farid, Vol. IV, p. 75. In this lecture, Imam Ali (a.s.) said about the Holy ProphetMuhammad(S):UntilAllahhonoredhim(Muhammad)byRuh-ul-Amin(i.e.,AngelGabriel)andtheBrightLight(i.e.,

Qur'an or Islam) and completed with him the prophets and completed with him the number of theMessengers."Seehowtheword"completedwithhimtheprophets"hasbeenexplainedby"completedwithhimthe

numberoftheMessengers".ItshouldbenotedthatinthewholeQur'an,theword'Khatam'hasbeenusedonlyonceandthat is in

this phrase. Also, this phrase; "Khatam un-Nabiyyin"was never used inArabic language before thisverse.ItwasanewphrasewhichwasusedforthefirsttimeintheQur'aninthisverse.And, therefore the only correctway of knowing its real significance is to see how this phrasewas

interpretedbytheHolyProphetofIslam,becauseitwasrevealedtohim,andassuchnootherpersoncanknowitsmeaningbetterthanhe.Andhehimselfinterpretedinthesewords:

"AndIamKhatamun-Nabiyyinthereisnoprophetafterme".ThesayingoftheHolyProphet(S)isaproofinitself.Butwhenthatsayingistheinterpretationofthe

wording of the Holy Qur'an, then it becomes double proof. The question is: Who has more right tounderstand Qur'an and to interpret the Qur’an thanMuhammad Al-Mustafa (S)?Who can explain themeaningofKhatamun-NabiyyinbetterthanMuhammad(S)?AndwhohasanyrightthatweshouldlistentohisclaimsleavingthewordingoftheHolyProphetof

8Chapter'Khatam'inDictionariesandUsage

Wehavejustseenthat in thecontextof theQur'anandaccordingto traditions, accordingtoIjma'aandaccording toReason, theonlymeaningof"Khatamun-Nabiyyin"which is relevant is 'TheLastofTheProphets', 'One who closed the prophethood. Now let us see what the dictionaries sayabout'Khatam'or.'Khatm'.

لمعلا متخ =(Khatamal-amal)=Hefinishedthe,workgiventohim.

ءانلاا متخ = (Khatam al-ina'a) = He sealed the mouth of pot (so that nothing comes out of it andnothingentersintoit).

باتكلا متخ =(Khatamal-Kitab)=Closedtheenvelopeandsealedit(sothatnothingisaddedintotheletterorputintotheenvelope).Itmust bementionedhere that 'seal' inArabicdoesnotmean the cancellation stampof post offices

موقلا متخ =Khatamul-Qawm=Thelastmanofthetribeornation.ThesemeaningsaregiveninalltheauthenticdictionariesofArabiclanguage.The Qadianis say that if someone is said to be 'Khatam ush-Shu'ara' or 'Khatam ul-

Mufassireen' or 'Khatam ul-Fuqaha', nobody thinks that after that person no other poetorFaqeeh(religiousjurisprudent)orMufassir (commentator)wasborn.Everybody thinks that itmeansthatthesaidpersonwasthemostexpertinthatfieldofknowledge. These people forget that if aword is sometimes usedmetaphorically (in fill allegorical sense) that

metaphoricalusedoesnotdeprive itof its realmeaning. If, forexample, theword 'Lion' is sometimesused forabraveman, itdoesnotmean that thiswordcannotbeused for theanimal, forwhich itwascoined.

Such arguments show the hollowness of their minds and bankruptcy of their thinking. Even if one

In otherwords, they are specialterms.Theword'Al-Muhajireen'isusedonlyforthosewhointheearlierdaysofhardshipofIslamlefttheir towns andmigrated either to Ethiopia orMedina. ImamMahdi(a.j.)a'Rasul'?

ThemostblatantlieistheQadianis'assertionthatTafseerSufisaysthatImamMahdi(a.j.)isaRasul.Nosuch blasphemous idea can ever enter into the mind of any Shia. But the Qadianis because of theircrookedmentalityarequiteunable tounderstandanysimple talkwithoutgetting itdistorted.Theverseunderdiscussionis:Itsmeaningisasfollows:·"It isHeWho sentHis Apostle withGuidance and Religion of Truth, to proclaim it over all

Referring to this, Imam Ja'afar Sadiq (a.s.) said (and I amquotingfromthesameTafseerSafi):"ThustheMessengerofAllah(S)foughtagainsttheunbelievers, andAlifoughtagainstthehypocrites.

Thus,AlididtheJihadoftheMessengerofAllah(S)".Likewise,inthisverseapromisewasgiventotheHolyProphetofIslam(S)(whoismentionedasHis

Page 65: Muhammad (S) is the Last Prophet

'When Qa’im, (Mahdi (a.j.) will appear there will be no pagan or unbeliever but would dislike hisappearance'.And it is recorded inMajma'ul-Bayan that theHolyProphet (S) said (mentioning the appearanceof

But if nobody rejects or refutes the previous validity of the ex-president, and if that ex-presidentisnotcallingpeopletosweartheirallegiancenowtohim,nobodycansaythatjustbyhelpingthepresentpresident,theex-presidentisbreakingthetenureoftheofficeoftherulingpresident.Thus, if Prophet Jesus (a.s.) during his second advent were to callpeople to believe in him or if

somebody was to reject even his previous prophethood, it will be against the Islamic belief. But asProphetJesus(a.s.)atthattimewillnotcallpeopletobelieveinhim,theMuslimswillnotberequiredtobelieveinanewNubuwwah(Prophethood).TheywillberequiredtokeepthesamebeliefinhispreviousNubuwwah(Prophethood)whichtheydo
