    Adv. Eng. - Week 1 (September 23)

NOTE: Come to Zoom at 9:00 this day, but read (and do) everything necessary before class day. This is our first class of the semester. We should review a few things because I am sure a lot of students have forgotten things over the summer break. There is a lot to do. Please go through all of this BEFORE class day, if possible!!! Many of these videos you have seen before, but it is a good idea to watch all of them. If you don’t, there are no minus points, but I will expect all students to understand this information. ------------------------------- [1] ------------------------------- About On Demand Videos https://commonsi.muc.meiji.jp/em/5e9e64a1d2634 Rubrecht Introduction Video 1 https://commonsi.muc.meiji.jp/em/5e9f8456e7bb5 Rubrecht Introduction Video 2 https://commonsi.muc.meiji.jp/em/5e9f83e61656f Rubrecht Webpage Explanation Video https://commonsi.muc.meiji.jp/em/5ea1238d31a4d ------------------------------- [2] ------------------------------- This sheet and video are for when you use video conferencing software like Zoom (for my class or for other classes). Pre-Class Checklist Video https://commonsi.muc.meiji.jp/em/5e9f8131bb9ff Pre-Class Checklist Go to “Downloads-General” and download this file: Pre-Class Checklist.pdf ------------------------------- [3] ------------------------------- The syllabus for the fall semester is the same as the spring semester. What this means is that the grading percentages are the same. You are given points for class contribution (which means attendance and participation). We will also once again go through the textbook, you will have homework, and you will have some sort of final assignment. Syllabus Go to “Downloads-TOEIC” and download this file: SYLLABUS-TOEIC Plus 2020.pdf Syllabus Explanation for my TOEIC Speaking and Writing Test class (Video) https://commonsi.muc.meiji.jp/em/5ea0c7b953832

We will be doing Chapters 1 – 12 this semester. We will learn about the TOEIC Speaking Test. It is a REALLY GOOD IDEA to review the background about this test (you can see in the Textbook Explanation video above). ------------------------------- [5] ------------------------------- The next videos and sheets are about my class rules. ------------------------------- [7] ------------------------------- We have a new ARS for this semester. Please make sure that you use the Meiji University ARS from now on. You made it this far! So now you can see attendance is an important part of your grade. I want you to be here! I also want feedback from you each lesson, if possible. I want you to watch the on demand videos and learn in this class, even though we are not together in the same classroom. ------------------------------- [9] ------------------------------- I have made a checklist so you know what needs to be emailed to me (and when). PLEASE BE CAREFUL! These sheets represent part of your grade. Email your sheets on the day of class, but only AFTER class has finished! Do not email me the Checklist (this is just for you to keep things clear). Go to “Downloads-TOEIC” and download this file: TOEIC Plus – Checklist of Files to Email – 2020 Fall.docx

------------------------------ [10] ------------------------------ Go to “Downloads-General” and download this file: Rename All Your Files for your Teacher.pdf Read this file. Go to “Downloads-General” and download this file: It is a New Semester.docx Complete this paper. Email this sheet to me. Do this whenever you have a lesson with answer sheets. Please RENAME the answer sheet. For example:

Next, understand that we should all try Zoom. I want everyone to know how to do this. • For our first class, let’s be on Zoom. Try to be in the Zoom classroom by 9:00. If you

cannot log in today, don’t worry. It will not affect your grade. • Check Oh-o! Meiji (or possibly my webpage at the “Downloads-TOEIC” link) for

Zoom Meeting ID information. • Remember: the typical purpose of Zoom is to see each other and for me to check if

you have any questions or problems, and to give feedback when necessary. I want to use this for the first lesson to make sure everyone is ok.

    • If Zoom does not work, it’s ok. Relax! We might have to just try a few things to see if they work.

    ------------------------------ [12] ------------------------------

This semester because we have to do SPEAKING, I want students to learn how to do easy internet voice recordings (yes, you can record other ways, but you must make sure that it is easy for me to play back the recordings). I certainly suggest students use the following site: Vocaroo This can be found at vocaroo.com It is free for what we will be using it for. The on demand video explanation is here: Vocaroo Explanation https://commonsi.muc.meiji.jp/em/5f1e520ee4528 ------------------------------ [13] ------------------------------

    Fill out the ARS.

    (1) Please RENAME the file like this:

Taro Tanaka Wednesday 1 September 23 ARS

If there is a visible extension, it might look like this on your computer: Taro Tanaka Wednesday 1 September 23 ARS.docx or Taro Tanaka Wednesday 1 September 23 ARS.pdf Thus, in this order: first name last name class day and period month and day of the lesson assignment (in this case, the assignment is the ARS)

The file names are very important. Because I have many students with many ARS and assignments, I need your help to keep them

organized. I don’t want to lose any files! Thank you! Please do not put extra spaces or commas in the file name. Please separate class period and dates. Example: GOOD: Wednesday 1 September 23 BAD: Wednesday1 September23 BAD: Wednesday 1, September 23 BAD: 1 Wednesday 23 September

    (2) Email it to me: [email protected]

Be sure to email after the lesson is finished and before midnight on lesson day. ------------------------------ [14] ------------------------------

Beginning next week – and continuing for the rest of the semester – you will be filling out Answer Sheets and making recordings. You will have to start – and complete – each week’s lesson BEFORE CLASS TIME EACH WEEK. This may seem somewhat similar to last semester’s style. That’s true. It is. But it is also a little different. Please read ahead by reading Week 2’s explanation now.

READ ABOUT HOW WE DO NEXT WEEK’S CLASS NOW!

    DON’T WAIT!

BECAUSE THIS IS A SPEAKING CLASS WE HAVE TO CHANGE A LITTLE!

    NO JOKE!

THERE IS NO EXCUSE IF YOU DON’T READ ABOUT WEEK 2 NOW!

----------------------------- [END] ----------------------------- If you have any trouble or difficulty, or if you need to contact me, please email me or talk to me on Zoom. If you have questions or problems, your classmates might have the same ones! Thank you, students!

    Adv. Eng. - Week 2 (September 30)

------------------------------- [1] ------------------------------- As you know we will have 12 chapters this semester. We will be doing 1 chapter each week from now. That means we have just enough time to do the two rounds (Round 1 is Chapter 1-6, Round 2 is Chapter 7-12, which goes over the same 6 sections of the test with a different focus). Week 1: Background / preparation Week 2: Round 1: Chapter 1 Week 3: Round 1: Chapter 2 Week 4: Round 1: Chapter 3 Week 5: Round 1: Chapter 4 Week 6: Round 1: Chapter 5 Week 7: Round 1: Chapter 6 Week 8: Round 2: Chapter 7 Week 9: Round 2: Chapter 8 Week 10: Round 2: Chapter 9 Week 11: Round 2: Chapter 10 Week 12: Round 2: Chapter 11 Week 13: Round 2: Chapter 12 Week 14: Final Assignment due There will be A LOT OF RECORDINGS that you must do for the TOEIC Speaking Test. That means, each week from Week 2 to Week 13, you will send me these files:

    1. Chapter Answer Sheet 2. One or more recordings that you make as you go through each chapter. 3. ARS

Answer Sheets and Recordings MUST be emailed to your teacher BEFORE 9:00 on class day. We will be using Zoom from 9:00 each week to go over the chapters and check answers as needed. This means LATE ANSWER SHEETS AND RECORDINGS = ZERO POINTS. We will also do speaking practice by using discussion topics, so I expect students to come to class each week on time. What does this mean? DO ALL WORK BEFORE CLASS STARTS! Give yourself time to do the work before lesson time. Lesson time is for checking information, checking answers, talking to your teacher, talking to classmates, and doing some discussion practice. We do not have to be on Zoom the whole class period, and if you don’t come to Zoom it is no minus points, but it is strongly recommended that, if at all possible, come to Zoom! You will be using Vocaroo (as explained last week) to make your recordings.

  • [MU - Adv. Eng. – 2020 Fall]

    12

Each week the Chapter Answer Sheet will give you a list of the recordings you must send to me. RENAME THEM CORRECTLY. Incorrectly named files not only make more work for me but they could also lead to your files getting lost, and lost files that were not correctly renamed are not the responsibility of your teacher. ------------------------------- [2] ------------------------------- Today you will do Chapter 1 (the book calls them units, so it is also Unit 1). Look at the textbook’s Chapter 1.You have an Answer Sheet for this chapter. Read through every section of the chapter, and as you do so, you will answer questions and do voice recordings (by using Vocaroo). Simply FOLLOW THE CHAPTER and FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS ON THE ANSWER SHEET. You will do most activities (do not do any Mini Test because they are there for you to practice before the last class day). The Answer Sheet will give you space to write your answers to activities. It will also tell you what to record and how to RENAME YOUR FILES when you send your recordings to your teacher. As with all the chapters for this semester, there is listening to be done. Here is a link to the listening files: =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= à ALL AUDIO (about 100 MB) https://mega.nz/folder/ykBmRaSR#BGxxqGDkQA2FHoJBOH5gcg =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= If you just want to download chapter files as you go (these will be a little smaller than all the files together, of course), you can download by chapter if you wish: =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= à CH 00 (this “chapter” is the background explanation of the Speaking Test. I advise students to listen to at least a little of each TOEIC question. This will really really help you understand what is considered good for this test and what kind of speaking will result in a loss of points). https://mega.nz/folder/bhRniIQb#b08fof7hJYrMr-gSt9ajEQ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= à CH 01 https://mega.nz/folder/W0AFwIQS#hC6KTchAyQWEcHoCG7C6bg =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= à CH 02 https://mega.nz/folder/vxBkFK6J#Et9nuMsFv9rXMG7VQC5ohQ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= à CH 03 https://mega.nz/folder/ysQHhA7R#IcSN2R94vNe4_s0Hn7ZaaQ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
