FROM THE PRINCIPAL Kia ora koutou, It's been a challenging week for us all. But, we have endeavoured to communicate open and honestly, to follow due processes, and to support all students and staff involved. A huge thank you to the MMI community for your support and positive feedback.

On a positive note, good luck to those students who competed in the Elite Athletics today and to our PCT team who represent the WBOP in PCT Nationals in Wellington this weekend. Congratulations to Te Roopu Kapahaka o Kia Maia who performed beautifully at the Rawhakangahau yesterday. We were very proud of your performance and the way you conducted yourselves. We have completed our orientation visits for year 6 students. Incredibly, enrolments are still coming in. Particularly, out of zone schools. Please make sure that if someone is talking about coming to MMI in 2017, they need to enrol now. We can’t make up classes for 2017 until we finalise roll numbers. Congratulations to Miss Rose Loughlin and Mr Elliot Needs who have successfully achieved their FULL teacher registration after their first two years of teaching successfully. Have a great weekend. BATTLE OF THE BAYS GISBORNE 16th – 18th NOVEMBER

On Wednesday 16th of November we travelled down to Gisborne in two school vans. On arrival we met our billets and headed to our hosts homes. On the Thursday we competed in the beach challenge event. We began the day well with our Year 8 girls winning the beach flags event. We had a couple of close races in the beach relays with the best results, our teams coming 3rd. Unfortunately there were no waves for the swimming and boarding events which took away some of our ocean skills. We began our water and run relays, with all our teams placing in the top 2 in the swim/run/swim events, and the board/run/board events. Heading into the last event (1 swimmer, 1 board paddler, 3 runners) a win would mean some teams winning their divisions. After some great and tight racing all three teams came in second or third, with the Year 7 girls winning their race easily. We ended up winning the Year 8 boys division, and came 2nd in both girls divisions, and 3rd in Year 7 boys. After all points were added up, Gisborne Intermediate came out victors, with MMI coming in second overall. On the Friday we had the team and individual triathlons. Unfortunately once again the surf conditions did not help us, with the big swells meaning that the swim leg was cancelled. This meant our swimmers now needed to run the 2.4 km course. All our swimmers ran well and we had four teams placed.

The Year 7 girl’s team of Kasha Stokes, Poppy Wilson, and cyclist Alex Thompson came second. The Year 7 boy’s team just missed the title, coming in a close second after great runs from Blake West, and Gus Shivnan, with Jared Lord riding a great cycle leg. Both our Year 8 teams competed well with Cooper Gibson, Matt Larsen and cyclist Matthew Wagstaff, and Lana Beck, Lucia Cook, and cyclist Sarah Burns both picking up bronze medals. Lucy Bartlett was a strong competitor in her first ever race to gain the silver medal in the Year 7 girl’s individual race, with both herself and the winner beating all the Year 8 girls. Liam Davoren was just outside the medals in the Year 8 boy’s individual race. Thank you to Sandra Boubee who accompanied and helped manage the team. Thank you also to our supporters who came and cheered on our teams for the two days of competitions, and helped with transporting cycles. Well done to the following students who represented our school with great determination and pride throughout the two days. Year 8 Girls: Eden Kelly, Sarah Burns, Kiana O’Fee, Lucia Cook, Lana Beck Year 8 Boys: Grady Forbes, Cooper Gibson, Liam Davoren, Matt Larsen, Matthew Wagstaff Year 7 Girls: Lucy Bartlett, Alex Thompson, Mia Thompson, Poppy Wilson, Kasha Stokes Year 7 Boys: Gus Shivnan, Blake West, Matt Anderson, Jared Lord, Alex Padfield

Lunches are a key contributor to school waste. With some planning we can all save money, help the school and the environment too. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle We are looking to improve our waste audit, which will take

place early next year. Litterless Lunches is about setting up new family habits. The idea centers around reducing food waste and packaging. The aim is to ensure that anything not eaten is reused or recycled. Our grandparents did it all the time. * Look for alternatives to packaging items. Ditch the cling wrap and foil. - use recyclable grip/zipper bags to repackage large bags on food like chips, raisins, cheese and lots more. - purchase small plastic containers with a good lid to repackage yoghurt. - honey wraps are great for wrapping food – can be found on line, at markets and various local stores. * Homemade yoghurt, muesli bars and biscuits are yummier and just a cheap as the bought ones. * Encourage your children to bring scraps home so you can find out what is not being eaten and why. * If not taking leftover food home, encourage your child to put their food scraps in the school food bins that are in every classroom – rather than the rubbish bin. An activity for you and your children. How long does it take for these products to decompose in a landfill?

Glass Bottles/Jars Aluminum Cans Plastic Bags Plastic Coated Paper Orange and Banana Peels Newspaper

Many of you are doing a great job at sending your child to school with a Litterless Lunch. Thanks for your support.
