    elcome to 2016! Another

year has come and gone, in

    seemingly speed-of-light

fashion. Out with the old, in with the

    new, as they say.

Last week, in our last issue of 2015,

we closed the door on the year with a

Year in Review. The end of a year is a chance for us

to reflect on all that has happened over

the last 12 months. It can be a sad time,

a happy time and a quizzical time all at

    once.

But the end also brings a new begin-

ning. With 2016 officially here, let’s all

resolve to make our lives, to make the

lives of those around us, better. Let’s be

a little more caring, a little more un-

    selfish, a little more polite.

Let’s work harder and smarter, in-

    stead of longer.

Let’s give a little more to those who

aren’t as fortunate as we are. Let’s

learn from the mistakes of our past,

and make our future bigger and

    brighter.

Here at The Sun, we resolve to serve

the community even better than we

    have.

We resolve to be a better community

    business partner, be better reporters

and provide an even better product for

our clients. We resolve to improve the

quality and quantity of our content.

We resolve to listen with open ears to

your thoughts, ideas and concerns. To that end, we’d love to hear from

you on how we’re doing, and what you

think we could be doing better. Please

share your thoughts via e-mail to

Help make our New Year’s resolu-

tions a reality by playing a part in

    your paper.

Here’s to a wonderful year ahead!

Born and raised in Mt. Laurel, CharWebster always had a passion for reading

and getting immersed in a story. The Holy Cross Academygraduate got into public re-lations after her schoolingdays were over but never lostthat passion to read and write.

“I just love it. I love comingup with ideas for different char-acters and getting into theheads of those characters. Ithink it’s a lot of fun,” Webstersaid.

While working at several publicrelations positions for Evesham

schools, Burlington County Collegeand at her current position as theBurlington County director of strate-gic planning and marketing, she puttogether numerous writing pieces in hercareer.

She got involved with press releases, an-nual reports, speeches and articles for oth-ers, but no creative pieces of her own.

For years, her mother, Arlene Webster, encouraged her to do some writ-

ing of her own, but Websternever took action until last sum-mer.

“I just didn’t think I wasgood enough,” Webster said.“Eventually, my mom told meto write her something by thefollowing day.”

So Webster put togetherthe prologue for her futurestory in just 24 hours, andher mom was blown away. She wanted more. Web-ster put together a few

pages for her mom to re-view, and this eventual-

ly turned into a daily routine.“In the back of my mind, I knew that

moms were always encouraging, so I was-n’t sure how to feel about it, but she as-

sured me that shewould never tell me Iwas great at somethingif she didn’t firmly be-lieve it,” Webster said.

The creation of herfirst book “Discovery”from “The Gifted Se-ries” had begun.

The story deals withan average 23-year-oldwoman’s summer tak-ing a major changeafter she is asked to help three troubledkids in foster care. The character soon dis-covers her foster kids are not quite whoshe had thought and neither is she.

She is then thrust into a world wherepeople have special gifts, and she and the

kids are being hunted. After working in the school system and

having one sister work as a guidance coun-selor and the other as a college professor,

Mt. Laurel author lets her creativity flow After finding herself involved in restricted writing pieces, Char Webster publishes first book

before the arrival of EMS, sur-vival rates have been shown to in-crease to around 40 percent.

“It’s just a very important topicto get more people to start CPRtraining,” Stringfellow said.

In one local example, Stringfel-low noted the benefits of havingCPR training paid off for Mt. Lau-rel resident Pete Gluszek and hisfamily during the July 4 holidaylast year.

Stringfellow recalls that whilethe family was celebrating,Gluszek heard his son yell fromthe pool that Gluszek’s father wasin trouble. Gluszek pulled his fa-ther from the pool, and while afamily member called for emer-gency services, Gluszek was ableto immediately begin administer-ing CPR.

    Stringfellow said MLEMS, fire

crews and Virtua paramedicswere able to respond within min-utes, and combined withGluszek’s quick actions, his fa-

ther survived and was releasedfrom the hospital a week later.

“Realistically speaking, had itnot been for Pete starting CPR,it’s highly likely that the outcomewould not be the same,” Stringfel-low said. “It makes a huge differ-ence.”

On Dec. 18, MLEMS held thefirst class in the Safest Communi-ty Initiative, during which it wasable to train about a dozen com-munity members in Friends and

Family CPR.Stringfellow said Friends andFamily CPR classes last about 90minutes while attendees learnadult hands-only CPR, child CPRwith breaths, adult and childAED use, infant CPR and instruc-tion on relieving the airway in anadult, child or infant.

The class is designed for com-munity members such as stu-dents, new parents, grandparents, babysitters and others who wish

to learn CPR, but don’t need acourse completion card in CPRfor job requirements.

    Stringfellow said the inaugural

class went well, and attendeeslearned why it’s important for asmany people to know CPR as pos-sible, as after just a few minutesof compression, even the physi-cally fit can become exhausted.

“If you have two or three peo-ple around to help, it relieves thepressure,” Stringfellow said.

    The next Friends and Family

CPR class is scheduled for Jan. 9at 10 a.m. at the MLEMS Station,201 Masonville Road.

MLEMS is also holding a free

Heartsaver CPR class at the EMSbuilding on Jan. 20, from 7 to 10p.m. The Heartsaver CPR class isa video-based, instructor-ledcourse that teaches adult CPRand AED use, as well as how to re-lieve choking in an adult, whereattendees also practice whilewatching.

Unlike the Friends and FamilyCPR class, upon completion of this class, attendees will receive acourse completion card in CPR

and AED use to meet job or otherrequirements. Those looking for more infor-

mation about MLEMS SafestCommunity Initiative trainingdates and locations can visitmlems.org or visit the MLEMSFacebook page.

According to Stringfellow, oncethe training classes are more es-tablished, his goal is to eventuallybegin training 100 members of the community each week.

“We want to train as many peo-

ple in CPR as we can at no cost tothem,” Stringfellow said.

Webster found herself aroundfoster children quite often.

She said she saw the effect ithas on kids firsthand and wantedto have that play a major role inher story.

While Webster was just happyto have finished the book andhave it published, she has reallyseen her novel take off.

“I consider finishing the bookand having it published a success, but I have had very positive re-

views and reactions so far, and Icouldn't be happier,” she said. She was recently invited to

host a book signing at theBurlington County Library afterdonating two of her novels forpeople who were not fortunateenough to purchase a copy of their own.

“They asked me to do a sign-ing, and I’ll admit I was a littlenervous at first!” she said.

However, it ended up being agreat success, as Webster was ableto sell every copy she came withand was able to catch up with afew familiar faces from the area

whom she had not seen in awhile.Webster is just getting started

in her writing career. She alreadyhas ideas planned for companionbooks or spinoffs of the originalstory. She plans to make “Discov-ery” the first of a three-book se-ries with a potential fourth bookhanging in the balance if thingsgo according to plan.

    Webster could not say enough

about the effect her mother’s posi-tivity had on her, so much so sheended up dedicating the book toher.

    The dedication reads: “To my

mom, Arlene Webster, who has al-ways had much more faith in methan I have ever had in myself. Inever would have done this with-out her constant encouragement, support and daily demands formore pages. Love you, Mom!”
