Our cakes are ready!!

After 12 weeks and a great deal of painstaking hours, our year 9/10 students have finally finished their decorated cakes. Every year I run this

class, I am often impressed by the imagination and creativity of our students and this year was no different. The students have done a fantastic job on their cakes, with some students taking on some ambitious challenges with their cakes. We were fortunate all our Year 9 students were invited to the Shire of Yarra Ranges Youth services, Youth Summit for 2014. Guest speakers including Kurt Fearnley who shared his experiences in achieving some incredible feats within his life. This included winning the Sydney to Hobart yacht race, winning several medals in the Paralympics and crawling his way through Kokoda and the Great Wall of China. Kurt was inspirational with all students hanging off every word he spoke. Project Rockit gave some very realistic strategies for students to combat

Dear Parents and Students

Our Biggest Backyard Blitz was Brilliant!!!!!

After a great deal of planning, advertising and consulta-tion we had our backyard blitz. We had almost 200 people attending through-out the day who primarily came from the Discovery Church as well as about a dozen students with their families. With chainsaws on the go as well as a great deal of weeding and cutbacks, we managed to get rid of years of overgrowth and noxious weeds which had grown into trees. It was such a great day with everyone pitching in with a smile on their face and enjoying the day. We achieved so much and really transformed the look of our garden.

Now we have scope to really create an amazing yard and plan for our students to contribute to making it so. A massive thank you goes to Counsellor Maria McCarthy who initiated this blitz, Sue Colverson for

organising this amazing event, the incredi-ble team from Discovery Church, our fabu-lous parents who worked tirelessly throughout the day in particular ‘The Huiskens, Brian Smith, Carole Hartshorn and Lisa Robertson who were there for nearly the whole day. Thank you also to the students who dug, swept, pruned, dragged branches, planted and raked, your attendance, effort and help was

on-line bullying. Catherine Moolenschot spoke at length about how to build confidence and the Indigenous Hip Hop group got everyone up and dancing! It was an awesome summit with all students enjoying the experience. Parent Teacher Interviews

It was pleasing to see so many families taking advantage of the Parent Teacher interview times to discuss their child’s progress. Having the interviews happening all in one building made it so much easier for families to find staff. If you were unable to make the interviews, feel free to contact any staff member to discuss your child’s progress.

Uniform

With the colder weather creeping up on us, it is a timely reminder that any extra clothing worn for warmth must not be seen. Therefore they must be hidden under-neath the polo shirts. Extra coats must be either the school jacket or a plain navy jacket with no other logos. Hoodies are not permitted under any circumstances. Students are welcome to wear either summer or winter uniform throughout the year but must wear the correct socks or leg wear. For girls tights can only be worn with the winter skirt not the summer dress. If they wish to wear socks with tights, the socks must be the same colour as the tights. Grey or white socks can be worn with either.

NAPLAN

This week year 7 & 9 students participated in their NAPLAN testing. This testing does provide staff and families valuable feedback as to where students sit in regard to VELS. It also allows students to experience examination conditions which is crucial to their future studies especially in VCE.

What’s on for Education Week?

The Library is celebrating Education Week with a display of books: Scientists do Amazing Things. Students are encour-aged to come to the library to browse, borrow and learn more about science, scientists who changed the world and learn about discoveries made by scientists that have affected every area of our lives. Science stimu-lates key developmental and behavioural skills such as problem solving, patience, creativity and teamwork. Check it out!! MONDAY

Year 7 Badminton

On Friday 9 May our Year 7 students

competed at the Yarra Group level for badminton with outstanding results. We had 5 boy teams and 2 girl teams involved with the only other school involved being Lilydale High School

with one boy and one girls team. The No 1 boys and girls teams from Mooroolbark campus were undefeat-ed and will now compete at the Eastern Zone Finals next term. The No 1 boys team from Mount Evelyn campus finished a very close second with their only defeat being against the Mooroolbark campus No 1 team. The team consisted of Christian Cameron, Ben Nettlefold, Kaleb McKinnon and Billy Meldrum. Congratulations also to Jayden Aubert, Chris Luke and Hailey Hackett for their spirited efforts on the day. BUS PASSES AND MYKI CARDS

It has been brought to the school’s at-tention that not all students are show-ing their School Bus Passes and Myki Cards when using the school buses to and from school. It is important that all students comply with requests from the school and the bus companies to carry and show their bus passes at all times. If a bus pass has been lost a replacement can be obtained from the Office for a cost of $5.00. The bus companies have advised the school that if a student continually tries to board a school bus without a valid bus pass they will be refused transportation and the student’s parent will be notified.

As part of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s Health and Safety Manage-ment Plan, new labelling will be installed at our school. The labels remind people to contact school reception prior to undertaking any works at the school, to ensure they have up-to-date information from the school’s asbestos register. Asbestos - which was used extensively in building materials in the past but is now banned - is considered safe unless damaged or in poor condition. The new labels form part of a comprehensive program to ensure Victorian government schools remain safe. Children’s safety is our number one priority. That is why we are taking this extra step as a precaution.
