Work Sequence, Procedure & Control Measures

The purpose of this method statement is to describe how the Curtain Walling system & associated items are constructed installed, with reference to the following risk assessments:

• ## • ##

Upon arrival at site, operatives should introduce themselves to the Rydon Site Manager and attend a site induction. They should familiarise themselves with the site fire strategy (provided by Rydon) and the site welfare facilities provided by the main contractor (Rydon). The works described below form the installation procedure of the window frame system, in accordance with the approved construction issue drawings. The system is the Metal Technology 5-20 Hi Thermally Broken Aluminium Window system. Operatives must view the installation manual before starting work. The material will be delivered to site, with the lorry accompanied during delivery and unloading. These materials will be stored in an area as advised by Rydon. Materials will be loaded onto the mast climber by 2 or more operatives, following manual handling principles and breaking-down loads where appropriate. Where the mast climbing platforms are to be accessed by scaffold, Rydon will provide a suitable winch/hoist that can pick the frames up from ground level, rotate, and lower into the required platform. Sequence:

1) The site foreman will identify the correct window to be installed by cross-referencing the elevation drawings against the window schedule.

2) The window will be carried to the mast climber I loading area by 2 or more operatives. Do not remove protective films or any loose parts attached to the frames at this point in time.

3) The frame will then be lifted into the mast climber by a sufficient number of operatives (suggested 2 on the ground and 2 in the platform) through the access gate. The handrails are not to be removed, or the platform otherwise tampered with. Where a winch I hoist is to be used, lifting straps are to be fitted around 2 equally spaced mullions on the frame (to keep the load balanced). One man must operate the winch whilst one man directs the operator. In both instances the SWL of all equipment MUST be adhered to, with the lowest SWL of any component involved in a task taken as the maximum load for the operation.

4) When the mast climber is loaded and checked to make sure the SWL has not been exceeded, the gate can be closed and the machine taken up to the required working level.

5) The frame will then be lifted from the mast climbing platform and onto the support rails already fixed to the building by a suitable number of operatives (minimum of 2, but 4 may be required for the larger frames).

6) Operatives will check the line and level of the frame, making adjustments where necessary.

7) Operatives will install the fixing channel and screw down through the frame to retain the window frame in place, and fill voids around the frame with rigid setting expanding foam.

8) The window perimeter will then be sealed with EPDM & adhesive to stop water ingress

Operatives working in the mast climber must be trained and understand the risks involved when using plant. At no stage should any of the operatives climb on the hand rail. The mast climber will require daily (at the start of the shift) and weekly (at the beginning of the week) inspections and a record kept in the Harley site office. Any defect or any concerns should be reported to the site manager immediately, who will make any necessary arrangements. Harsco will conduct thorough examinations at 6 weekly intervals. Operatives must not stack items on the edge of the platform, or use the handrails to lean materials against.

Operatives are only permitted to use either 11 Ov power tools or cordless tools, which must be PAT tested.

lt is important that good housekeeping is maintained, with all packaging, empty pallets and waste materials taken to the skip at break times and at the end of each working day. Operatives are reminded that they must follow the site waste management plan, and must therefore dispose of waste in the correct receptacle.

All operatives should read and understand the method statement and risk assessment before carrying out the works. If an operative is unsure of the requirements then they should ask their line manager or site manager to explain further. All operatives should have a good understanding of English- their comprehension will be tested. This sequence of work is under constant review by Harley management, and may be changed to introduce methods of best practice. Site work is always reviewed and monitored for safety and quality by a Harley site supervisor.
