EXTERIOR WALLS

6.1 General

The exterior walls complete with all integrated penetrations and utilities shall be designed by

Contractor, structurally and architecturally, to provide a fully weather-tight, gas tight, fire resistant,

well insulated, maintenance free skin, under operation in a harsh marine/industrial environment over

a lifetime of 20 years, not requiring maintenance.

The detailed design by Contractor shall integrate and include all necessary doors, windows, louvers,

removable panels (if applicable), all penetrations from other disciplines and connections to other

building parts.

Exposed edges on insulation materials shall be protected against water ingress whilst in transit and

storage with a heavy membrane coating.

Exterior walls, facing plated and grated walking areas, shall be provided with an integrated 400 mm

high stainless-steel kick-plate to protect the wall against damage from trolleys and rubbing hoses.

All piping will be sleeved through the wall and cables penetrating the wall shall be routed through

MCT’s welded in the walls. The walls shall be required to bear the weight of ducts, pipe runs, ladder

racks, etc. at any point of penetration.

Alternatively, Contractor may provide specific supporting structures for these items, using

standardised support brackets. Contractor shall ensure that these items do not jeopardise the

performance of the walls.

External walls have a minimum sound reduction as specified under ‘Noise Control” of this

specification.

The outer sheeting shall be the same as, or equivalent to, the wind sheeting around the platform.

6.2 Exterior Walls – Corrugated Welded Wall Panels

For some applications, structural load carrying walls of corrugated welded panels will or may be

used. For these walls the following additional requirements are applicable:

Minimum material thickness for exterior steel corrugated wall panels shall be 3 mm.

Additional thicknesses may be required for fire rating or strength.

The walls shall resist the action of the fire from one side only, however, on several locations’

panels might have to resist the action of fire from both sides in order to meet the specification.

6.3 Air Tightness

Unless stated otherwise on the drawings all walls shall be airtight, of such a construction that the

wall with integrated penetration shall be of a gastight design and construction execution to prevent

gas ingress from the outside, unless stated otherwise.

The minimum differential pressure rating over the wall to confirm gas tightness shall be 100 Pa. and,

where applicable, rat holes and the like shall be welded closed to ensure the required gas tightness.

Air tightness testing may be executed using the HVAC system.

6.4 Fire Resistance

The fire resistance of the wall shall be in accordance with the requirements of the drawings and the

codes and practises. Penetration through building elements such as walls, floors, doors and ceilings

shall be such that fire resistance of the relevant elements in which they occur is maintained. The

walls shall resist the action of the fire from one side only, however, on several locations’ panels might

have to resist the action of fire from both sides in order to meet the specification.

6.5 Blast Walls

Unless noted otherwise on the data sheet/drawings, blast walls to be able to withstand a blast of 500

mBar overall and 1 Bar locally as a minimum requirement.

6.6 Thermal Insulation

The completed exterior skin of the wall of a building block shall be insulated such that after

completion of the block the skin with its thermal bridges achieves an average thermal transmittance

of U-value 0.50 W/m²-K or better. The walls shall be insulated, and vapour tightened such that no

harmful interstitial condensation in the construction of the inner side of the building skin shall occur.

Welded provisions for supporting the insulation and fastening of the installation shall be installed

before blasting and painting.

Where exposed vapour barriers are applied, they shall be provided with a protective Stainless Steel

316L sheet (1mm) to the approval of Company.

Thermal insulation of floors shall be performed by:

a floating insulation floor on the structural under-floor,

an integral insulated floor system,

a weather proof insulation underneath the floor.

Contractor shall, prior to commencing any action other than design, submit to Company for approval

a detailed report with calculations on all physical aspects.
