Achieving twice the world’s food production at half the ecological foot-print by the year 2050 is a goal that will require highly skilled animal-science experts. To meet this demand, four leading European universities have established the unique Erasmus Mundus MSc in Sustainable Animal Nutrition and Feeding (EM-SANF). The programme is hosted by École d’Ingènieurs de Purpan in France, University of Debrecen in Hungary, Wageningen University in the Netherlands, and Aarhus University in Denmark.

Feeding the growing world population sustainably – in a manner that is environmentally sound and socioeconomically acceptable – is today’s major challenge, and it requires highly trained experts with a multi-focus view of animal nutrition. The EM-SANF MSc programme educates students to solve the animal nutrition challenges of the future. The complementary expertise of four European higher-education institutes, with support from the international feed industry and academic partners worldwide, aims to educate students to meet the ‘twice the food production at half the eco-logical footprint’ challenge.

The MSc in Sustainable Animal Nutrition and Feeding is a double-degree programme in which students specialise in two out of four alternative tracks. The programme is unique in its approach to student mobility, as it is a joint international programme with links to industrial and institutional partners worldwide, allowing students access to the latest research as well as the experience of differing cultures and learning environments.

In their first year students take courses to enable them to conduct research as part of their thesis in the second. In the first semester, students choose between two partner institutions, focusing on either Feed Market and Economics or Nutrition and Environment. In the second semester, students continue at one of the other two partner institutions, choosing between Feed and Food Evaluation and Modelling Nutrient Metabolism. The sec-ond year comprises an internship and a thesis, supervised by the partner institutions selected in the first year and if possible conducted at one of the (associate) partner institutions. Students may choose between four differ-ent tracks comprising four combinations of double degrees. Some subjects can be followed by all students at each partner institution through cross-teaching, video-conferencing and distance learning technologies. Study advisors assist students to make decisions in planning.

The programme is complemented by a two-week Introduction Pro-gramme for first-year students, introducing training in scientific skills and providing a forum for networking with second-year and graduate students, as well as with tutors and associate and industry partners. At the Introduc-tion Programme Summer Conference, second-year students present their

thesis proposals to the Consortium, to first-year students, and to represent-atives from the associate partners.

The EM-SANF MSc is open to motivated students with a BSc degree in Animal Sciences, Biology (Zoology-oriented) or Veterinary Sciences with specified prerequisites involving basic knowledge of statistics, math-ematics and chemistry. The course is supported by the Erasmus Mundus programme of the European Union, which provides scholarships for the programme for both EU and non-EU students.

PHD STUDIES AT THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

The Graduate School of Science and Technology (GSST) at Aarhus Uni-versity offers PhD studies in science and technology. The aim is to meet the demand for highly qualified researchers to undertake research, devel-opment and teaching assignments in both private and public sectors for which a broad knowledge of research is required.

The PhD student will be a part of dynamic and professional scientific networks highly experienced in both research and teaching. A main su-pervisor is appointed to each PhD student on admission, in most cases along with a team of supplementary supervisors. Interaction with scientific groups abroad further equips the PhD student with valuable experience and knowledge within his or her field of study.

GSST offers PhD studies in the following fields:AgroecologyAnimal ScienceBioscienceChemistryComputer ScienceEngineeringEnvironmental ScienceFood ScienceGeoscienceMathematicsMolecular Biology and GeneticsPhysics and AstronomyNanoscienceThe PhD student can tailor her or his PhD studies to suit collaboration with other institutions, research schools, centres or private companies.

ADMISSIONStudents are admitted to GSST based on either a three-year Bachelor’s degree or a five-year Master’s degree – both of which entitle the PhD student to be admitted with credit transfer. Students can be admitted with for example 12 months of credit on top of their BA (the so-called 4+4) as long as the total years of study add up to eight (3,5+4,5, 4+4, 4,5+3,5, 5+3). If admission is based on a Bachelor’s degree only, the PhD student is also initially admitted for an MSc degree with an individual programme of study designed as an integral part of the following five years of study. After the first three years of this five-year programme of study, the PhD student will obtain an MSc degree.

If the PhD student’s admission is based on a Master’s degree, he or she is admitted for a three-year PhD programme.
