Our College has school-wide expectations to enable successful learning; these are expressed as being “Ready to

At this week’s whole school assembly, we celebrated those students whose record of learning in the first semester

identified them as learners who aim high, always give of their best, and never give up trying. Congratulations to all

students who received the Principals Award for their outstanding effort:

Our Science staff have once again prepared a week of activities to activate curiosity and interest in Science as part of

National Science Week. It is great to see students’ participation and getting involved in the daily Science Xuno news

bulletin question.

Our College staff have participated in a wide range of professional learning activities as we implement a school

improvement plan that delivers excellence in teaching and learning. A group of enthusiastic staff have even

volunteered to stay back at school on Friday afternoons, after the school day has finished, to take on an opportunity

to learn from Emeritus Professor Patrick Griffin, a renowned leader in education, the founding director of the

University of Melbourne’s Assessment Research Centre, and published widely on assessment and evaluation topics.

A few weeks ago, Emeritus Professor Griffin brought the Deputy Minister for Education from the Kingdom of Saudi

Arabia to visit our school; the Minister was keen to hear about the learning that our staff are involved in, and to see

our students’ learning in action. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has chosen the Melbourne Graduate School of

Education (MGSE) to lead a large-scale transformation of the curriculum for its 36,000 schools, a project initiated by

Emeritus Professor Griffin. We are grateful that Emeritus Professor Griffin has given our teachers the chance to

engage in this extremely worthwhile professional development.

Education Deputy Minister Nayyaf from Saudi Arabia enjoyed the chance to meet students during his visit to KSC

The past few weeks at school have been generally

quiet, with the new building works continuing.

You may have seen advertising for surveys about a

potential change to our school’s name and uniform, to

coincide with the new building. These surveys can be

found on the school Facebook page, website, and

XUNO. They will be live until Friday, so please get all

responses in prior to that. This data is very important

for the future of our school, and we would value your

opinions. We would also like to say that, “we feel there

is an exciting future ahead for Kyneton Secondary

College”.

The year 10 formal will be going ahead again this year.

A ‘dress to impress’ night on Friday the 17th of August

will be enjoyed by the year 10 cohort. Year 10s will

have had a busy week, with a pathway information

night on Wednesday the 15th also being held. This

night provides important information about the

following years in VCE, VCAL, apprentices, and TAFE

courses.

VTAC applications opened for year 12 students last

week. This marks an important milestone for those in

year 12, as this begins their future of further education

or work. Many universities and tertiary education

providers are holding their open days, and we

encourage students to go along to these and get

some information.

Parents / Carers who require additional assistance with

appointments during our two course counselling days as

The course counselling sessions will discuss the individual

planning pathways for students. These decisions are

important and all Parents / Carers are encouraged to

On the evening of Tuesday 7 August, fifty students from Years 8 to 12 attended

a performance of Oscar Wilde’s play An Ideal Husband at the Playhouse Theatre

in Melbourne.

After dinner at Southbank, we walked to the theatre at the Arts Centre,

received our tickets and took our seats. The play is a comedy in which a

successful politician, Sir Robert Chiltern, strives to maintain his career, family

and reputation whilst being blackmailed. Like all Wilde comedies, the dialogue is rich with incomparable wit, the

characters immersed in the drama unfolding around them, and the action through the second act was fast paced,

which we all found immensely enjoyable.

The cast delivered the performance entrancingly, and with some of the actors being quite familiar to the teachers

amongst the group – Gina Riley (from Kath and Kim) and Michelle Lim Davidson (from Utopia and Play School) – we

were treated to a most entertaining evening.

The opportunity to take such a large group of students to Melbourne to enjoy this enriching experience would not

have been possible without the kind and generous support of the MTC’s ‘Sharing the Light’ program. The program is

supported by Crown Resorts and the Packer Family Foundations, which covered the cost of the bus travel as well as

heavily subsidising the cost of tickets.

For many of the students involved, this was their first experience of live theatre, however some had also attended

MTC’s performances of Macbeth in 2017 and Jasper Jones in 2016 through ‘Sharing the Light’, which has sparked a

continued interest in the theatre for these young people.

The season of An Ideal Husband continues until August 22, and we would highly recommend the show to all of our

families!

We have been extremely fortunate in accessing the talents of the award winning and highly sought after

Phunktional, a not for profit arts company, who will deliver a performance of ‘Who Stole Your Soul’ at Kyneton

Secondary College on Tuesday 4th September.

‘Who Stole Your Soul’ is a powerful performance that explores the complex world of teenage communication on,

and of-line, including social media, which is very relevant in the world that our children are growing up in.

All year 8, 9 & 10 students will be attending this incursion. The subsidised cost is $5.00. All permission slips and

payments to be returned by next Tuesday, to the finance office. Thank you!

Science week 2018 (11th August – 19th August)

Welcome to Science week! The school theme of 2018 National Science Week, ‘Game Changers and

Change Makers’, is focussed on the scientists, engineers, technologists, mathematicians, designers and

innovators of the past and present. Staff and students were involved in a range of activities including year

7-mousetrap racers competition, staff morning tea and daily bulletin questions – there were lots of prizes

on offer! Photos from Science week will be published in the next edition of the school newsletter.

Year 9 & 10 Applied Science

Year 9 & 10 students have been examining forgery. They have been examining money from different

countries and identifying the security features on each of the notes.

Year 11 students have been examining force and motion using the linear air track and photo gates.

Year 7 Science

Year 7 students have been examining simple machines and forces.

Thanks to Mr Oldaker who brought in a pulley system so the students could experience first-hand how pulleys make

work easier.

The intermediate basketball teams went out on

Monday the 13th of August, to participate in the

interschool sports at Craigieburn. All teams

performed well, with each team winning at least one

game each.

The boy’s team played four games, with two wins

and 2 losses. Josh Roberts played four outstanding

games having plenty of scoring shots for the team.

The A-girls also performed well. Maddy Lee and

Mackenzie Cameron had a sensational afternoon

leading the girls to some wins. The B-girls won their

first two games, but unfortunately went down in

the last. Taryn Cairnes put in a brilliant effort during

each of her games.

A huge thank you to Kelly Baker who helped coach the B-girls, Zoe Turner who helped coach the A-girls, and

Matthew Paterson who helped coach the boys. Also, thank you to Bailey Maltby and Hayden Boyer for helping

assist/score.

The Kyneton Secondary College Year 8 Girls’ Soccer team

competed in the Northern Metropolitan Regional Finals on

the 6th August, at Reservoir.

The team consisted of Adrienne Cameron, Charli Copeland,

Maddi Dutton-Johns, Hayley Fleming, Lauren Girvan, Mariam

Habib, Luca Hart, Tessa Leight, Hannah McGrath, Montanna

Roberts and Jazmin Stanley-Horoch.

of year 10 supported the team.

The girl’s first game was against Melbourne Girls School.

They tried hard, played fairly, showed good teamwork but

were out pointed 0 to 5.

Their game against Viewbank Secondary College was a different story. At the half time break scores were even 1 - 1.

A strong goal from Maddi in the first half had given the girls confidence.

In the second half of the game, Mariam Habib added another goal to the team’s score and they were up 2 to 1. For a

good 10 minutes, KSC had many more opportunities to score- but it was not to be. Viewbank levelled at 2 all with

only a few minutes left on the clock. The final goal of the game went to Viewbank in the last moments, which meant

the final score was, 2 to 3.

The girls are to be commended for their efforts.

Year 8 Girls Soccer

This award winning initiative aims to increase understanding,

reduce stigma and improve mental health knowledge in our

shire. The Live4Life initiative is run in five secondary schools in

the Macedon Ranges.

Recently the Live for Life Crew were at KSC for the third session

in a series of workshops, this one focused upon ‘body talk’. In

the workshop, students were encouraged to engage in physical

activity, both by themselves and with others.

One of the activities they were involved in was the ‘Lily pad’

activity, which helped develop teamwork and trust. Students

were also involved in boxing and dance to get out of their

comfort zone and to challenge themselves in a fun and safe

environment.

Student DIS Survey

2018 Parent Opinion Survey WE WANT OUR PARENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK!

Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an

annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly

selected parents. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parents’ perceptions of school

climate, student behaviour and student engagement. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct

future school planning and improvement strategies.

Approximately 30 per cent of parents will be invited to participate in this year’s survey. All responses to the survey

are anonymous. This year the Parent Opinion Survey will be conducted from Thursday 2nd August to Sunday 26th

August.

The survey will be conducted online, only takes 10-15 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient

time within the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones.

The survey results will be reported back to the school at the end of September. The survey results will be

communicated to parents through annual reporting.

Our aim is to enhance students’ resilience, optimism, confidence, and social and

emotional skills. In order to build school student and teacher capacity to undertake a

school wide approach we have decided to engage in an initiative and participate in the

Resilience Survey.

Children and young people with higher resilience are more likely to thrive in learning and achieve greater

educational outcomes.

To this end all our students have been invited to complete the online Resilience Survey, conducted by Child

Psychologist Andrew Fuller and Resilient Youth Australia Limited.

This Resilience Survey collects the self-reported strengths of our students, as well as exploring wellbeing and the

levels of hopefulness in our students. The online survey is completely anonymous and no student is identified. The

data is collected and analysed by Resilient Youth Australia and reported back to the Principal. Resilient Youth

Australia (RYA) may collaborate with experts in the area of youth resilience and wellbeing to assist with future

research. The researchers may be clinicians or academics from universities. RYA will manage all research related

activities.

Our school will use this data to help identify the strengths of our students, and enable us to ensure we are

supporting our students in an effective and meaningful way.

This online survey will be undertaken during the month of August, during class time. It is anticipated that this survey

will usually take approximately 40 minutes for each student to complete.

Students will be supported through the survey process through teachers and specialist support staff where required. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s participation in the Resilience Survey, or do not wish

your children to participate, you may wish to contact the Principal or our Wellbeing Coordinator, Amanda Summers
