Lesson

We are going to learn how to subtract objects. When you subtract objects you take away.

This sign is a sign of subtraction. Whenever we see this sign between any two groups of objects we know we have to take away from the group of objects

When we subtract we make a smaller number, like in the example of the peaches. We had 5 peaches. Then we took away 2 peaches. That gave us 3 peaches left. 3 is a smaller number than 5.

5-2=3

When we subtract we make a smaller number, like in the example of the butterflies. We had 9 butterflies. Then we took away 3 butterflies. That gave us 6 butterflies left. 6 is a smaller number than 9. 9-3=6
