Industry Interview 2By Megan Vincent
Do you think the rise of fast food is youth culture?
Mrs Burton thinks that young people have a lack of skills and knowledge now a days so they go for the easier/cheaper option.
Unhealthy things are also extremely available
Sometimes, the option of fast food ‘fills the gap’
What do you think about fad diets and trending habits?
Mrs Burton reckons that there is a ‘café culture’ happening- people go out a lot more now a days, perhaps as a social act
There is also lots of many good offer Females are perhaps victims of these fad diets
(Weight Watchers/Slimming World/ nutrient drinks)
Relates back to the skill of being able to make healthy and delicious food
Like Derek, she believes that fad diets are not sustainable and short term
Normally, you are meant to lose 2-3
pounds a week, anything more than that could be water weight
Snack healthily and stick to the 3 meals everyday
Don’t be lured into the marketing of supermarkets
Is fat good? Mrs Burton believes that you should eat fat,
however it depends on the type of fat ‘Low fat’ products are compensated by high
amounts of sugar We need fat soluble vitamins A, D, K which are
necessary for a healthy lifestyle We need to avoid saturated fats that are
animal based She believes it has so many functions in the
body and we need it for example, in order to protect the body
As a nation, do you think we are a healthy nation?
Mrs Burton thinks this topic is very debatable
There are so many foods out there, we need to be very careful with what we eat. To do this, she mentioned the ‘Eat Well Model’
Education on this Model would be beneficial
Mrs Burton also thinks that parents play a large part in the diets of young people
However, we can be a healthy nation and some restaurants are recognizing healthier habits i.e a water and fruit choice
However, you must still be aware towards things like this as they market it very well
Should you follow fat content/ calories/ sugar on food packaging?
We should follow everything, according to Mrs Burton
Sugar quantity and saturated fat is also important to have a look at it
Protein portions are also vital She also thinks that this information is
not very visible
Do you think there is enough evidence that supports the government’s advice which is available to the public?
She thinks there is enough evidence but it is not obvious enough
She also believes that shock facts are really effective and will create social interaction within the audience
This is the fact she gave us: ‘In 2015, it was the first year where more people died in the world from chronic diseases i.e heart disease and diabetes’
More people should be aware of this- we could perhaps include this in our documentary. She used the example of an old programme called ‘Honey we are killing the kids’
Do you think what we are exploring will be helpfulto our target audience?
Mrs Burton thinks the audience need a reminder of the consequences and a shock of how many fast food products there are
She also recommended speaking to a chef if we can
What would be your 'common sense' approachand conclusion?
Interestingly, Mrs Burton did not pick up on the ‘common sense approach’ but instead she thought that ‘changing you habits will make a big difference’
She believes that it is never too late
So… What will I take from this?
Like Derek, Mrs Burton believes that fast food is very available as well as ready meals and snack
Something that I haven’t considered, was this idea of a ‘café culture’ and I think that we should make it obvious in our documentary that ‘eating out’ is becoming a popular and daily routine
Another interesting point we could pick up on is the clever marketing of supermakets
Although we are exploring the governments advice, it is necessary that we explain that we still need fat as it is vital for our health. For example, we could explain that we need to stay away from the saturated fats from food fast food. But instead, we need to state that we need the vitamins from fats as it is not all bad
To prove this, we could mention the ‘Eat Well Model’
I think we should make it clear that people should look at the saturated fat quantities on packaging as this is the most harmful to our bodies, as well as sugar.
One of the most helpful things that I found from this interview was her advice of using shock facts because I think this will be really effective in targeting a young audience who are fox thinkers
We could also include the fact that she has given us to shock the audience
