‘The time has come the Walrus said, to talk of many things’

And on that note, my time as Editor has come to an end. It’s certainly been challenging & if I didn’t have other duties to perform, I would’ve probably kept going, but, could’ve, would’ve, should’ve don’t count for much in the hustle & bustle of this crazy modern world we live in today.

As the President has pointed out in his musings for this month, the MRADMC is moving forward & has, to date, had good crews to keep her on course both in smooth & rough seas, but it’s now time to change part of the crew, mix some old blood with some new, become, ‘refreshed’ & continue moving forward. As I indicated last month, I will not be standing for any executive position on the next committee, but I am happy to assist those that do, for another twelve months.

At the last committee meting, Rob Bryant asked for assistance to find a new PAHR co-ordinator, nothing unusual about that, but some of his comments after that struck a chord. The PAHR committee is already a well oiled machine & is full of dedicated, passionate people to do the work, they just need a leader, They have a, ‘succession’ plan in place, when someone decides to move on, or changes roles, they already have a successor who has either understudied or assisted the person who is changing or leaving – smooth, transitional, no gaps.

This is one of the resons I’m happy to assist whomever takes over the role as Secretary & if I’m still around, any subsequent Secretary or Secretary in waiting. The issue of succession will be addressed at a GM & I urge you to consider taking up, ‘some’ role, or offering, ‘some’ assistance to your next committee. The End

Page 5: MRADMC MotorMouth 2015-04

Greetings all,

Someone said once, that the older we get, the faster time goes. I’m beginning to understand what they meant. Here we are approaching our April GM already & whilst so much has been done already this yea, there is still so much to do before the AGM in October. Your committee has been as busy as ever, making sure the bills are paid, reports are written, maintenance is up to date, laws are being adhered to & generally trying to keep the MRADMC running as smoothly as possible with the least amount of disruption to members.

However, from time to time, things need to change to either keep us up to date, the old way is just not working anymore, or there is a better, alternate way to do things.

As part of this, the committee are looking at a, ‘points sytem’ of membership, bar coding this year’s membership cards, (for a variety of reasons & benefits), & on at least two of the General Meetings left to us before this year’s AGM, having an interactive session with members covering things like, expansion, succession, future proofing procedures, roles within the club &

Sounds awful, but it’s not, (trust me, I’m from the Government, I’m here to help!). All will be revealed at the April meeting, might even be a good reason to turn up & see where your club is heading??

MACEDON RANGES & DISTRICT MOTOR CLUB GENERAL MEETING

4th March 2014 President Alan Martin called the meeting to order at 7:40 PM, and welcomed everyone to the March meeting.

Members Present: - As per attendance register. 152 members. 4 Visitors, 17 Apologies

Visitors: - Four Visitors, Michael, (his third visit), has a 34 Nash & a 59 FC Holden, Dennis has a HR Holden, Roger has an XJS Jaguar & Bernie who has a 1934 Tourer, (I missed what make it was), & an EH Ute.

Apologies: - As per attendance register, & from the floor.

Minutes of February General Meeting: - The President asked if everyone had received their MotorMouth magazine for this month, (which had only been sent electronically as the spiralling costs of printing & postage needs to be addressed). Some responded yes, most in the negative. Events co-ordinator advised that over 162 members had at the very least, ‘clicked’ on the e-mail that had been sent out with the club magazine, MotorMouth, (with the minutes in them), so was at a loss as to why so many members were advising that they had not received their copy to date. Because of this, no vote was taken to move or accept that the minutes from the previous meeting were a true & correct account of that meeting. This makes two months in a row the minutes have not been moved, seconded or accepted.

Business Arising: - No business arising.

Brief Reports

President’s Report: - President spoke about PAHR being a success this year, (as in other years), he offered his congratulations to the PAHR committee & all members who, ‘volunteered’. There were a couple of disgruntled members of the public, but as we all know, you cannot please all of the people all of the time. All issues brought to the club’s attention by both club & members of the public will be addressed & responded to, by either the PAHR or Executive Committees.

Vice President’s Report: - VP advised that tonight’s guest speakers had to defer because of urgent family business, but in their place, Kate & Michael Tabone would give a presentation on one of the magnificent cars they have in their impressive collection.

Future speakers are:-

April - Senator Ricky Muir, (about as confirmed as you can get when dealing with any Politician) May – A representative from Sentry Batteries

5 | P a g e

Page 7: MRADMC MotorMouth 2015-04

June – Founding member & elder statesman of the MRADMC, George Porter

Secretary’s Report: - Secretary advised that all incoming correspondence had either been dealt with or passed on to those who needed to deal with it. Of note however was the renewal of our liquor licence, a bill from AGL that he finally agreed with, & a contract that needed to be completed by the MRADMC with VicRoads, to enable us to continue participating as an authorised body for the CPS.

Treasurer’s Report: - Adam advised that the club was in a sound financial position, & a bank balance was given. The following accounts were put forward for payment:-

Origin Energy - $286.00, Brown’s Cleaning Service - $132.00

The President asked that the treasurer’s report as given be accepted. Moved by John Van Groningen Seconded by Geoff Buchanan, motion carried.

Event Co-ordinators Report: - Graham spoke about PAHR & although numbers were not the highest we’ve ever had, were still an indication of the popularity of the event. All traders were happy, sponsors were happy & most of the public were happy. There were a few minor hiccups, but most were out of our control, (kangaroos, dust, inability to park where they wanted rather than where they were sent), but all issues would be discussed & addressed at the next PAHR committee, which would be the wrap up for 2015 PAHR, before they started all over again in July for the 2016 PAHR.

A question from the floor was asked, how many vehicles attended, the response being 3347 comprised of almost an exact split between display & general admittance vehicles. The financial results were still being calculated & should be available at the April GM.

Some upcoming events that are on, are:

Drive-in Night on the evening of the 21st of March at the Coburg Drive-in. Normal cost is $40-00 per car, but a special deal for us will be $25.00 per car, so bring along your classic car. Movies available will be, Insurgent, Run all Night & Bogus. 29th March – our friends & neighbours the Steamies will be holding a swap meet here at the park, $15.00 will secure a site, $5.00 entry fee for the public. April there will be a Motor Cycle run. Plans are afoot to organise a run for, ‘younger’ members of the club, a run for ‘older cars’ & something on Easter Monday

Mid-Week Run Coordinator’s Report: - John Van Groningen - The March run will be to the Newport Fire Brigade Museum Workshops, (meet either at the club, or at the Servo opposite Calder Park), & lunch will be at the Williamstown RSL.

April could see a trip to Kryal Castle, (depending on cost) & May brings the Annual, ‘Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea’, which is an annual fundraiser for the Cancer Council of Australia. This event is always well attended, most enjoyable & raises much needed funds for the council, which is always matched by the club. Members who intend to attend, could you please liaise with John in relation to what sort of, ‘plate’ to bring, i.e. savoury or sweet?

Page 8: MRADMC MotorMouth 2015-04

AOMC Delegate’s Report: - Robert Green – Robbie advised that he attended the last AOMC delegates meeting where they had a guest speaker on welding. The changes to the CPS are now being fully implemented & being enforced quite vigorously by the boys, (& girls), in blue. There still seems to be a glitch with post 1966 LHD vehicles which is being sorted by VicRoads, so if you’re considering buying or selling such a car, it may be prudent to hang on for a month. One of the topics of discussion was that most of the inspectors at clubs are not full bottles on modifications, but ignorance is no excuse. If there’s a problem & a vehicle modified beyond what is allowed passes a club inspection & happens to be checked by either VicRoads or the local constabulary, the club is included in whatever disciplinary action is meted out.

Apparently, there were more cars placed on the CPS in January than there are already registered in Victoria, so some clubs are already coming under very close scrutiny, (the MRADMC issued paperwork for three new vehicles). There have already been examples of CPS participants receiving a letter in the mail asking them to present their vehicle & paperwork to Police Stations. These vehicles have not been stopped by the Police, the owners have just received a letter, no prior warning. These have mainly been vehicles that have obviously been heavily modified.

Don’t forget the Australian Motoring Festival between the 26th & 29th of March & the Robert Shannon’s Trust Fund may be able to give financial assistance to younger people, more details available from their website, or Robbie.

Robbie advised that he will be standing down from his role as Senior Inspection Officer at the next AGM, (October) & if anyone is interested in becoming part of the inspection team, to speak to him in the first instance.

In closing, could members please be more alert, (the world needs more lerts), in & around the workshop – stay out from underneath vehicles on the hoist unless you are either working on that vehicle, or have been invited underneath to look at something. An inspection day will be scheduled for May.

Editor’s Report: - Peter Amezdroz will be the next Editor, secretary will finish off April’s issue of Motor Mouth & Peter will start his illustrious editing career with the May issue. (Thank you Peter). Kate has offered to assist for a short while, so thank you Kate as well.

Membership Officer’s Report: - Ted advised that our membership numbers now stood at 318, with 560 members. Over the last month, (which of course included PAHR), he has had 45 enquiries from the Public in relation to membership, he asked if members were approached & they felt comfortable enough imparting the required information, could they please emphasise that membership is not an automatic entry to the CPS, certain conditions must be met.

Sales Officer’s Report: - Lina advised that this year’s PAHR sales yielded $5212.00, (not sure if that included raffle ticket sales), but as usual, there are raffle ticket books outstanding. As a registered raffle with the VCGLR, the MRADMC is accountable for every ticket by law. It doesn’t matter if the dog ate them, you put them through the washing machine or you lost them, we NEED to know so we can account for them. As for last year, we will be sending a letter out with a statutory declaration attached to those members who have not returned their tickets, in the hope that we can account for all

7 | P a g e

Page 9: MRADMC MotorMouth 2015-04

tickets. (Note: - The committee have determined that members who have outstanding tickets will be given every opportunity to return or advise what has happened to these tickets. If, as in the past, there is no response whatsoever from any member with outstanding tickets, the cost of those tickets will be added to their renewal membership fees for 2015-2016).

Lina thanked many people for their tireless efforts at PAHR & advised that she had 2012 PAHR badges available for $5, 2013 PAHR badges for $10 & 2015 badges for $15. Picnic at Hanging Rock Coordinator: - Graham would have a more detailed report available once all the figures are in, but in the meantime his report as events co-ordinator gives a brief overview of this year’s event.

Property Officer’s Report: - Rod advised that there was a problem with the guttering that was being addressed, including some of the flashing. There would be a working bee on the 14th of March to pull down the chain mail fence at the back of the clubhouse to allow easier access to destroy the blackberry bushes & help with the maintenance of the area between our neighbours & us. All AV equipment should be installed & operating by the April GM. There is now a lock on the Steamies gate that we can access if there is a need for extra parking. As we approach winter, the area across the road from the front gate can be deceptive, it may look firm, but it isn’t – better to park on solid ground than take a chance out there, (just ask the secretary).

Technical Officer’s Report: - See Robbie’s report under AOMC report.

Librarian’s Report: - NTR

Web Master’s Report: - NTR

General Business: - John Van Groningen advised that there was a sale coming up on behalf of Ken Turner-Craig being on the 22nd of March, which will include many tools & ‘Garagenalia’ & bits & pieces.

Martin Bakker asked why members don’t have MRADMC stickers on their cars, (probably has something to do with cost & what people are or are not prepared to put on their cars).

Geoff Stellini is looking for a panel beater & clutch repairer.

PAHR got a few mentions from the floor, mainly in relation to members who did not turn up to assist at PAHR when they were rostered to do so. This led to some discussion on whether or not the issue was not turning up, or not advising that they were not available. Questions were asked, ‘Do we know who didn’t turn up’ – yes, ‘Should we give, ‘incentives’ of some sort’?, (whilst the short answer was no, there is a proposal before the committee to change membership renewals to a points based system & in that system, members who, ‘gave back to the club’, by way of assistance et al, would be rewarded with bonus points, (incentive).

Some of the questions in relation to the club paying for traffic control training etc. was addressed by Graham in that, if we, ‘didn’t’ pay for the training of our own, tasks like that would have to be outsourced at considerable expense & we would, ‘still’ have to have members at each entry & exit to advise the paid traffic controllers what was & what wasn’t a classic car, or allowed into the display area as opposed to the general admittance area.

8 | P a g e

Page 10: MRADMC MotorMouth 2015-04

Daniel raised an issue about a young boy driving around in what amounted to a motorized pedal car. Sue raised a point about shift workers being catered for both in runs & membership attendances.

For Sale / Wanted: - See separate entry under ‘Cars & Parts for sale’

There being no further business, the President declared the meeting closed at 9:15 pm & invited Kate & Michael to give their presentation, (which was great & thank you for stepping up on such short notice),

Alec Mead OAM Secretary

Mid-Week Run

The March run, (Wednesday the 25th of March), will be to the Newport Fire Brigade Museum Workshops, (meet either at the club, or at the Servo opposite Calder Park), & lunch will be at the Williamstown RSL.

April’s run may be to Kryal Castle, this depends on whether or not we can get a good price, & May we will be at the clubhouse for Cancer Council’s greatest morning tea.

Events

Rally Director / Events

There are now 6 members assisting on the planning for events plus of course John Van Groningen for the midweek runs. By the time you get this edition of Motor Mouth several more events will have been run and done.

Due to some personal priorities I am unable to provide a list of future events for this edition but will have a list for all at the next club meeting in April. So bear with me please and keep an eye on the website.

Cheers, Graham – Motoring across the landscape

Picnic at Hanging Rock Graham - Just Hangin' around

The subcommittee met in February, (post the event), and captured some good feedback on the event as reported at the general meeting in March.

The committee is now enjoying a well-earned rest for a few months, but, if anyone is looking to join in and assist with the planning please give me a call.

Several members of the planning committee also met with the club committee at their March meeting to discuss succession planning and areas where the full club committee could provide further assistance. In particular, we are looking for someone to take over the role as PAHR co-ordinator, as I am now leading a team of people as the events co-ordinator, it would seem more prudent to have someone else take the reigns as the PAHR co-ordinator.

Now that may sound daunting to some, but whomever volunteers to take this role on will be stepping into the driver’s seat of what has become a very well oiled, slick, self-driving machine that has its own set of managers, all you have to do is steer.

We will keep members apprised of the outcomes and should have a final financial position to report at the next meeting.

Cheers As always Graham - Just Hangin' around..

Resignation Sadly, from time to time, for whatever reason, a member may decide to leave us & Tony Perkin has decided that now is his time to move on. Tony had a quadruple by-pass in December & because of the distance involved in getting to the club from Drysdale & his health issues, (which by the way, we are pleased to say, are improving with each day), has decided to pull the plug. He leaves us on good terms, is welcome to visit or join us on any runs we may have & has asked me to convey to all members his appreciation of friendships made & good times had over the 9 & a half years of his membership.

Congratulations to first time grandparents, Graham & Deb Williams for the safe arrival of grandson, ‘Jax’, on the 20th of March.

(Apparently GrandPa has already made sure young Jax has his first set of wheels)

It’s an unfortunate fact of life that sometimes we get sick or for whatever reason, we aren’t feeling 100%. If you know of someone who is not in the best of health & there is anything, you can think of that the club can do to help them, please let our Welfare Officer, (Paul Wiley) know.
