Author Analysis & Research

1st semester it was a thesis paper!

Now it’s time to create a PPT so excellent your college prof will

ask how you did it!

PPT Project Goals

• Acquaint yourself in-depth with a major author & a short key work

• Share your findings via PPT & class presentation

• Biography

• Key short work

• In-class analysis

• Classroom handout

• Grade = test (25 grades)

PPT Project Basic Info

• Must choose a different author from 1st semester project – full grade penalty!

• May work in pairs or alone

• Need to be ready on date scheduled on HE Web Calendar

• Class requirement for passing grade in Honors English

PPT Project Guidelines• 10-12 minutes in length

• No fewer than 10 slides

• PPT must contain…• your own design template• engaging, appropriate graphics (1 per page)• at least one intelligent sound byte• live weblink to quality site• readable slide of your “key work” & any guide questions or other info

HINT: Find graphics & sound bytes specific to your author!

Author PPT Research

• Six authoritative resources – 3 print & 3 web

• No online or print encyclopedias!- this includes Wikipedia!

• Annotated bibliography in MLA format

What does annotated mean? An annotated bibliography is

one that includes a sentence or two after each entry that details the information found in that source.

Author Biography Info

• Key dates – including birth & death

• List of all “major” works

• Pertinent biographical details- key factors that brought recognition- what this author is remembered for

Presentation Advice

• Your PPT is to be presented, NOT read!

• You are in charge – not the computer!

• Face the students, not the screen!

• Speak slowly, confidently, and loudly

• Breathe deep – have fun

Four More Project Hints• Save your files to your school drive or email to honorseng@fvlhs.org. If your files are too big, you can break into two or three PPTs by using “save as” and reassemble at school.

• Be sure to test everything BEFORE you come to class -- bad things can easily happen if you don’t. Have a back-up plan.

• Practice! Practice! Practice! The best way to beat the “I’m-gonna-be-at- the-front-of-the-class” jitters is to know your material so well you can ignore everything else!

• Ask if you need help! The English Dept web page and FVL Intranet page have help links!

You must be ready on the posted date – we will not have time to reschedule presentations. Failure to complete this project will result in a full grade drop of your final grade.

Quirky PPT advice• Remember Room 2308 has PPT 2010 – if your PPT is done at home, things may not look or run the same…

• Be aware of sound files and fonts. Always choose to “embed fonts” when saving. Sound files typically aren’t embedded into your PPT – need to bring along separately and link to PPT.

• Easiest way to avoid these problems is to bring in your

own laptop and hook up to projector & speakers. (Arrange to try this before your presentation to make sure all the right cords are available & you are comfortable with the set up!)
