Chapters 1‐3
Mr. Popper really wanted to go to the arctic. Penguins live in the arctic.
He wanted a penguin as a pet. Mr. Popper loved penguins.
Mr. Popper wrote a letter to a man named Admiral Drake who lived in
the arctic. He told the admiral how much he loved penguins. Admiral
Drake sent Mr. Popper a penguin. Mr. Popper loved penguins.
The Popper family played with the penguin. They named him Captain
Cook. Mr. Popper loved penguins.
Chapters 4‐7
Captain Cook needed a cold place to live. The refrigerator was the best
place. The Poppers made the refrigerator his home. Captain Cook
made a nest in the refrigerator. Mr. Popper loved penguins.
Chapters 8‐9
Mr. Popper took Captain Cook into town. His neighbors had never seen
a penguin before. Some people were scared of Captain Cook and ran
away. Mr. Popper loved penguins.
Captain Cook loved to slide down stairs. He led Mr. Popper to the top
of some stairs. Captain Cook slid down the stairs on his belly. Mr.
Popper loved penguins.
Chapters 10‐12
Captain Cook was lonely. Mr. Popper got a new penguin named Greta.
He painted Greta and Captain Cook’s names on them. This way he could
tell them apart. Mr. Popper loved penguins.
Greta and Captain Cook needed a bigger place to live. They moved into
the cold basement. One night it snowed and the snow came into the
house. Mr. Popper loved penguins.
Soon afterwards, Greta began to lay eggs. Greta and Captain Cook had
ten chicks. Mr. Popper loved penguins.
Chapters 13‐15
Mr. Popper needed money to take care of the penguins. He trained
them to do tricks. Mr. Popper loved penguins.
The penguins did their tricks in front of people. They marched and slid
on their bellies. The people cheered. Mr. Popper loved penguins.
Chapters 16‐18
Popper’s Performing Penguins were becoming famous. People waited
in long lines to see them at the theater. Mr. Popper loved penguins.
One night seals were performing at a theater. The penguins went onto
the stage. The seals and the penguins did not get along. Mr. Popper
called 911. He did not want the penguins to get hurt. Mr. Popper loved
penguins.
The owner of the theater was very angry with Mr. Popper and his
penguins. The police took them to jail. Mr. Popper loved penguins.
Chapters 19‐20
Admiral Drake helped Mr. Popper and his penguins get out of jail.
Admiral Drake wanted to take the penguins to the arctic. Mr. Popper
went with the penguins. He said goodbye to his family. Mr. Popper and
his penguins sailed away. Mr. Popper loved penguins.
