tool. SPA is an intuitive, browser-based user interface for the purpose of historical trending

and analysis of Symmetrix array performance data. This course will cover SPA functionality,

architecture, installation, and configuration.

Symmetrix Management Console and Symmetrix Performance Analyzer are intuitive, quick, andsimple. The combination of Symmetrix Management Console and Symmetrix Performance Analyzersimplifies the task of provisioning storage in the virtual data center.

Symmetrix Performance Analyzer collects and stores historical performance data for you to analyze

and report on workload and resource usage trends for: High-frequency data collection

Root cause analysis

Alerts and events

User-definable charts

Service level management

Capacity planning

Session Persistency - When changing to and from Diagnostics and/or Real-time modes to anyother mode selected charts were not retained upon return. Selected charts persist acrossmodes.

Symmetrix Performance Analyzer is launched from Symmetrix Management Console and provides adetailed view of performance metrics.

The key capabilities of Symmetrix Performance Analyzer are:

Dashboard view configurable for user-defined views.

Heat map provides real-time heat map of entire array.

Real-time monitoring allows a storage administrator to monitor

Advanced diagnostics allows users to set alerts and thresholds and drill down to identify theroot cause of performance issues.

Advanced alerting allows you to establish alerts for informational, warning, and critical.

Trend and forecast provides detailed performance tracking to trend and forecast future

storage growth.

This slide provides a summary of the Symmetrix Management Console and Symmetrix

Performance Analyzer packaging. This release combines Symmetrix Management Console

and Symmetrix Performance Analyzer into one installation package.

The Symmetrix Management Package Enhanced includes:

Symmetrix Management Console

Symmetrix Performance Analyzer

Ionix ControlCenter Performance Manager

Ionix ControlCenter StorageScope

Solutions Enabler must be installed before installing Symmetrix Management Console with

Symmetrix Performance Analyzer. It can collect performance data on the Symmetrix arrays

that are directly connected to the host through the Solutions Enabler storstpd daemon.

SPA uses relational database architecture, a relational MySQL database, which support multi-user support. The users login using a web client Internet explorer or Firefox.

SPA collects and stores the data in its database which automatically gets installed when SPA

is installed. For Solaris UNIX and LINUX operation systems the MySQL command is used to

start/stop the SPA database.

the SPA tool installation process.

You must install SMC with the SPA installation. When you open SPA, you have the sameaccess controls and privileges as you have in SMC. For example, if you have access to 3 out of5 Symmetrix arrays in the domain, you will continue to have access to those same 3 out of 5Symmetrix arrays.

You must have a SPA license to access all the views. For more information about eLicensing,refer to the EMC Symmetrix Management Console and Symmetrix Performance AnalyzerInstallation Guide.

Procedure

Symmetrix Management Console V7.1 or later must be installed to use the SPA Link andLaunch from SMC.

Note: The secure port must not be disabled during the SMC installation to use the SPA Linkand Launch from SMC. Solutions Enabler V7.1 or later must be installed, and the storstpddaemon must be running (for SPA data collection). The event daemon must be running for

Real Time collection.

Note: When upgrading to Solutions Enabler 7.1, the SPA service must be stopped before theupgrade, and then started after the upgrade is complete.

Solaris/Linux installations: When performing a new SPA installation on Solaris or Linux, theMySQL user and MySQL group must be present before beginning the SPA installation.

An example of the instructions:

SMC/SPA is distributed with the SMC/SPA installation DVD, which includes kits for all

supported platforms. To install, either of the following browsers should be used with cookies

and JavaScript enabled:

Internet Explorer 6.0 through 8.0

Firefox 3.5

Browsers should have Flash Player 10.1 plug-in installed. If your browser has an outdated

version of Flash Player, you will be prompted to download the latest version when you start

the web console.

The system requirements are:

Disk space 1024 Mb

Memory 768 Mb

The installation packages are in Powerlink. Depending on the operating system, a specific

installer will be used:

For Windows 32-bit: SMAS_V7.3.x.x_WINDOWS_X86_32.exe

For Windows 64-bit: SMAS_V7.3.x.x_WINDOWS_X86_64.exe

For SunOS: SMAS_V7.3.x.x_SUNOS_SPARC_32.bin

For Linux: SMAS_V7.3.x.x_LINUX_X86_32

The install package is included with SMC. When we open the SMC installer, a dialogue

window appears where SMC and SPA can be installed. You can first install SMC and then

install SPA at a later date; or you can install both SMC and SPA at the same time, as illustrated

here.After the Next button is pressed, the SPA Ports window appears displaying the default

ports for SPA. By default, SPA uses the secure port. However, you can enable HTTP for

launching the console. The default ports are shown and can be modified as needed.

The SPA licenses are added from the SMC console. To add a license, select Symmetrix Serial

Number to manage licenses. There are tree tabs to manage licenses. Select the SPA tab.

SPA can be launched from SMC. Launch Symmetrix Management Console. In the tree view,

right click on a Symmetrix array. Select Performance Analyzer. Then select either Trend or

Snapshot view. Symmetrix Performance Analyzer is launched as illustrated here.

To launch directly to Symmetrix Performance Analyzer, open a browser and enter server IP

address or Host name: port number 7070 and /spa.

The Symmetrix Performance Analyzer console login will appear as illustrated here. You can

use either port 7070 with http or port 8443 with https. These are the default ports. Ports canbe changed during install.

In this demo, you will view the installation of Symmetrix Performance Analyzer and the

addition of Symmetrix elicenses.

In this lesson, you will learn about navigation in the SPA tool, registering arrays for data

collection and setting data collection policies. Also, setting performance thresholds, hot to

configure alerts, scheduling a data trace, and managing database backups and restores.

The Symmetrix Performance Analyzer console displays five icons at the top level: Print,

Refresh, Export, Exit, and Help.

There are three menu tabs that select File operations, Administration tasks, and Help.

View selections include: Dashboard, Snapshot, Trend, Diagnostic, and Real Time.

SPA opens to the Dashboard view. The Dashboard view is divided into 2 sections. The left

section provides a tree view of available dashboards that you can select. SPA provides a pre-

designed dashboard (Symmetrix Heat Map) and the option to create your own dashboard

view.

From the Symmetrix Performance Console, we can launch the Help facility by pressing the

? icon. The Help menu is an intuitive array of information and demos. There are three

categories: Contents, Search, and Glossary. Glossary contains some utilized metrics

descriptions.

In the SPA demonstration area, you can launch several useful demonstrations to help with

difficult administration and functional tasks. In this illustration, you can see the Snapshot

data points demonstration.

Policies

Policies are the data saving requirements you set for SPA. SPA includes default values for

each of the policies available.

To set global policies:

Select Administration, Policy. Select a Policy and set a corresponding Value. Perform this

action for each policy you are setting.

Base Interval is the frequency of polling in the Snapshot and Trend views. The default 15

minutes is recommended.

Collection recovery is the amount of data that the storstpd daemon will save if the SPA

server.

Diagnostic interval is the frequency of polling in the Diagnostic view. A default of 5 minutes is

recommended.

Hourly retention is the length of time in months to save the data in the database.

Symmetrix Performance Analyzer Key Performance Indicators include a wide range of array

resources and workloads. The tables illustrated here show the different indicators available

for each Symmetrix component.

Users can take a high-level view of one or multiple arrays, drill down into physicalcomponents, monitor replication via SRDF groups, and gain a better understanding of

application performance by tracking device groups. Overall, this wide range of key

performance indicators provides a comprehensive, yet intuitive, way to monitor the

Symmetrix array performance.

Data Collection Registration

After installing SPA and its eLicenses, the Symmetrix ID will appear on the Data Collection

Registration; the user will then select the types of collection desired in this window. If no

registrations are selected, no Symmetrix systems will be monitored.

Metrics

All the SPA metrics are continuously collected and calculated. However, the user may want to

select some important metrics. To enhance your overall experience in SPA, we can customize

the list of metrics that display in the Explore tab and Query views.

To filter the SPA metrics in displays:

Select Metrics Management from the Administration menu to open the Metrics

Management dialog box.

Select the Category to display the available metrics for that category.

Select the KPI box for each metric that you want to display by default. Selecting KPI

automatically adds the metric to the All list.

Select the All box for any metric that you do not want to see by default, but may want to see

if needed.

Thresholds and alerts can be established using Symmetrix Performance Analyzer. The

combination of alerts and thresholds as well as the diagnostic drill-down capability allows a

storage administrator to quickly identify the root cause of performance issues.

To set Thresholds:

Select Administration, Thresholds and Alerts to open the "Threshold and Alert Configuration

dialog box.

Select a Category, Symmetrix ID, Component, and Metric. The name in third field

Component in the dialog box changes based on your selections in the first two fields.

Alerts are set only on the component level. When Array is selected as the Category, the

Component field is dimmed and the Symmetrix ID displays. This dialogue window shows the

drill-down selections.

Select Enabled for the First Alert and set the Severity of the alert. Possible severity optionsare Information, Warning, and Critical. Enter a number in the Value field, or use the default

value.

Set the number of Occurrences in the data Samples to initiate an alert. For example, if the

threshold is breached 3 times out of 5 samples, initiate an alert.

Alerts are user defined conditions based on threshold crossings; these will trigger

Information, Warning, and Critical events. The Administration Alert management option

allows adding, removing and modifying alerts.

To configure thresholds and alerts in SPA:

Select Administration, Thresholds and Alerts to open the Thresholds and Alerts configuration

dialog box.

Select a Symmetrix ID and Category, the Category such as Cache partition, and Metric. The

name in third field category in the dialog box changes based on your selections in the first

two fields. Alerts are set only on the component level. When Array is selected as the

Category, the Component field is dimmed and the Symmetrix ID displays. Select Enabled for

the First Alert and set the Severity of the alert. Possible severity options are Information,

Warning, and Critical.

Enter a number in the Value field, or use the default value. Set the number of Occurrences in

The Real Time Trace Management selection allows changing the Real Time Trace parameters

in the Real Time submenu. A trace can be configured in advance, or collected by pressing the

Capture button in Real Time view.

To change the setting: Select Administration, Real Time Trace Management to open the RealTime management dialog box. Press the New button to open the Real Time configuration

dialog box. Select the Symmetrix ID, Date, Start Time, # of Hours, Retention, and provide a

Description for the trace.

SPA can save up to four hours of data (in 4 one hour files). The user can initiate or schedule a

trace from the Real Time view.

Query

The purpose of Queries is to define and choose different metrics at each object level forcertain time frames in order to export. This function allows for exporting XML and Excel CSV

formats. The user can save query selections for generating a similar export later, or schedulethe query to run on a regular basis.

The SPA database can now be queried in two modes: Ad-hoc and scheduled. Scheduledreports can be set to repeat on a regular basis. Output format can be CSV or XML.

The SPA Query management feature allows you to perform the following actions:

Define a query of the SPA database

Execute a query

Schedule a query

Copy a query

Modify a query

Delete a query

When you define a query, you can pick and choose different metrics at each object level forcertain time frames. The export function allows for XML and Excel formats (CSV). You cansave query selections for generating a similar export later, or schedule the query to run on aregular basis.

To create a query, from the Administration tasks, select Query Management, then, press theNew button. The Define Query dialogue window appears. Press the New button, theCategory Instances Metrics; Here the Symmetrix ID can be selected from the available list

and the metrics that the query will be reported.

From the Administration options, you can run any saved query. To run or execute a Query

report, follow these steps:

1- Select a report.

2- Press the Execute button.

3- Save the report to local disk.

4- Open saved file as shown here.

A dashboard is a collection of charts that you define, or that SPA provides. A user-defined

dashboard must have a unique name, up to 32 characters. In addition a user-defined

dashboard can be contained in a named folder, or to the default Dashboards folder. Folders

can be used to separate arrays, applications, or any other object. The folder name displays inthe Dashboards tree.

When you create a new dashboard, you can set the dashboard to automatically display by

default each time you open SPA. Only one dashboard can be set as the default per user.

There are 3 options for SPA database management Backup, Restore and Optimize.

To backup the SPA database:

Select Administration, Database Management, Backup to open the Database backup dialog

box, enter the Backup File Name; then, Click OK as illustrated.

Backup files are placed in the EMC\SPA\data\backup folder.

To restore the SPA database:

Select Administration, Database Management, Restore to open the Database restore dialog

box, select a file name from the Available Database Backup Files list.

Backup files are placed in the EMC\SPA\data\backup folder.

Optimize

As the SPA database grows, there are many empty spaces that can be reorganized. Use theSPA Optimize feature every few weeks, during a slow time, to streamline your database and

improve its performance.

Selecting a type of view is very simple, it depends on the information the user is looking for:

Dashboard view is configurable to establish user-defined views; it is readily available

when a user logs in.

Heat map which is part of the Dashboard has capability provides real-time heat map

of entire array.

Snapshot view The Snapshot view is used to evaluate performance over time

Advanced diagnostics capability allows users to set alerts and thresholds, and drill

down to identify the root cause of performance issues.

Advanced alerting allows you to establish alerts for informational, warning, and

critical.

Trend and forecast provides detailed performance tracking to trend and forecast

future storage growth.

Real-time monitoring allows a storage administrator to monitor and capture traces in

real time.

Dashboard view

A dashboard is a collection of charts that you define, or that SPA provides. A user-defined dashboard

must have a unique name, up to 32 characters. In addition a user-defined dashboard can be

contained in a named folder, or to the default Dashboards folder. Folders can be used to separatearrays, applications, or any other object. The folder name displays in the Dashboards tree.

In this illustration we combine a Host I/O graph and the heat map.

NOTE: there are no Dashboards by default, they must be created.

Heat Map

A SPA heat map provides a snapshot view of one Symmetrix array's health. The map shows, from the

top-down, a color-coded view of the following physical components:

The heat map capability provides a quick summary of array performance color-coded to identify

areas of performance issues.

Maps out physical state of the Symmetrix resources

Can be created as a User Defined Dashboard

The visible resources are:

Front-end directors and their ports

Cache memory

Back-end directors and their ports

Disk distribution

When any component is selected, each Director, port, partition and disk displays a chart that

illustrates the percent busy, or for cache, the percent of write pending used.

To customize a Dashboard:

1. User first selects Charts from Real-time and/or Diagnostics views.

2. By pressing the copy icon the selected charts are saved in table for inclusion duringdashboard creation.

Note: Charts can be saved for inclusion into either new dashboards or into existing

dashboards.

Now that we saved some metrics to add to the Dashboard we can apply them to a new

Dashboard:

3- Right click on Dashboards and select New Dashboard

4- Press the Paste charts button

5- Select charts to be included in Dashboard

Note: The selected charts can be included into existing dashboards via Manage Dashboards.

To create a new Heat Map to the Dashboard:

1. Right click on Dashboards and select New Dashboard

2. Enter name of Heat Map and press the Add heat map button

3. Select Symmetrix ID to be included in Heat map.

With SPA 2.2 there are new Dashboard metrics which show FAST tier activity. The individual

tiers are displayed to compare utilization as illustrated here.

The Snapshot view displays a calculation of the collected data over time and shows the

relationship between the physical components and logical elements such as device groups,

pools in the system. The time ranges are 24 hours to year to date and custom. The color

codes provide percentage utilization for the components. Each metric can be open for moredetail by clicking on the desired component.

All Snapshot views can be opened by selecting the object in the navigation tree while in the

Snapshot view. For example, to view data for all device groups, select the Device Groups

folder. To view the data for one specific device group, select the device group name in the

navigation tree. The data for the selected object displays in the right side of the SPA window.

In Virtual Provisioning environments, you can monitor the performance of thin pools as well

as the utilization of thin pools. The graphs provide a contrast of activity for the different

types of disk pools. The color coding makes the contrast between pools easier to be

assessed.

In FAST environments, using Symmetrix Performance Analyzer, a storage administrator can

quickly track the performance of Storage Groups and storage tiers. The Symmetrix

Performance Analyzer capability will help storage administrators plan for capacity and

performance. The color coding of the pie graph contrasts the usage of the different typesof disks.

These are some of the Key Performance Indicators that are available for SRDF/A groups:

SRDF/A WP Count that is the number of SRDF/A writes pending.

Percentage SRDF/A Maximum Cache Used.

Min Cycle Time that is the setting for the minimum number of seconds for a cycle.

DSE Used Tracks that is the active cycle spilled count plus the inactive cycle spilled count.

SRDF/A Session Indicator which indicates if group is SRDF/A.

SRDF/A Active Indicator which indicates if the RDF/A group is active.

The Trend view allows the user to see an extended usage of the different Symmetrix

components, for example in the illustration provided the RDF IO and throughput, the chart

provides activity of several days. The other charts display the Write pending usage

percentage and Host IO activity.All data in the view corresponds to the Time Range selected at the top of the view, which

allows you to toggle between the predetermined times; for example 24 hours, 1 week, or

Custom which opens the Custom Time range dialog box, on which you can specify a

custom time range.

The Trend view is used to obtain predictive information and capacity planning. The Trend

view can best show the consumption of resources over time. The Trend view also supports

linear projection lines, which can be used with user-defined thresholds as the basis for

capacity planning. To create a projection graph, simply select a component metric and pressthe Trend view icon.

Use the Linear Projection icon in the top-right of a trend chart to expand it and add a linear

projection line. Using the data points in the time period, the software calculates a linear

projection line and displays it on the chart. The user can edit the number of future forecast

points displayed by using the controls in the upper-right of the display. This projection canhelp predict when the performance of the object or folder will reach an unacceptable level.

A simple linear projection is just a planning tool, of course. Many data environments grow

rapidly when new applications are added, not linearly over time.

The back-end directors metrics count the internal reads and writes, resulting from clone

copy and VLUN migration activity. The back-end directors also have activity metrics for thin

devices, thin pools, and thin tiers.

SPA supports views for Thin Tiers pools with an object tree for Snapshot View and TrendView.

The Trend view support SRDF Director metrics for future projection, some of the metrics are:

SRDF MBs per second shows the MBs per second sent and received over the SRDF link.

SRDF IOs per second shows the current IO/s sent and received over the SRDF link.

In the example we project linearly the IO/s per second into the future.

Real Time view provides the same navigation style as Diagnostic view - tabbed tables. Click

the table row to select a Symmetrix array in the list, as shown in the top pane. Each

Symmetrix array has tabbed information for front-end directors, back-end directors, and RDF

directors.The Capture button saves the present charts. The data is saved in a file which can be selected

from the Time Range drop-down list. To display the hour's worth of data, select the trace

from the Time Range drop-down list. The data can be narrowed down by sliding the time bar

to an exact time. When we magnify a chart in Real Time view, the metrics continue to

display every 5 seconds.

In the Real Time view we can select more than one format, for example the latest and the
