The Tom Joyner Foundation (TJF) named Talladega College its “School of the Month” for March 2019. This designation will help the College raise scholarship funds for deserving students while promoting the institutions’ accomplishments and activities. TJF was established in 1998 by radio personality Thomas Joyner, Sr., host of the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show (TJMS). The Foundation has raised over $65 million to assist HBCU students.

Alumni, faculty, staff, students, and businesses will be encouraged to contribute during the campaign. Hill, Sr, vice president of institutional advancement, at [email protected].

The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new residence hall was a joyous occasion celebrated by hundreds of Talladegans; attended by local and state leaders; and recorded by every media outlet in the region. Although memories of the uplifting ceremony are still fresh, attention is quickly shifting to the Dr. William R. Harvey Museum of Art and the new student center - both of which will also open in 2019.

To ensure that the center will meet the needs of current and future students, Talladega College President Dr. Billy C. Hawkins invited student leaders to meet the architects. Students gave valuable feedback about the design of the 47,000 square-foot facility, which will include a 2,000-seat gymnasium. Excitement about the student center and the museum is palpable campus-wide.

Mr. Isaiah Hugley ‘79, chairman of the Talladega College Board of Trustees, was named the 2019 Unity Award recipient at the 33rd Annual Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Award Breakfast in Columbus, GA.

Chairman Hugley, who has served as Columbus City Manager since 2005, earned a Bachelor of Arts in history/pre-law at Talladega and a Master of Public Policy and Public Administration at Mississippi State University. He manages over 3,000 employees and a budget of $270 million dollars. He is also an adjunct professor at Columbus State University, where he teaches local government management. He has received numerous awards and honors including the Georgia City – County Management Association Pillar of Professional Management award (2015) and The Legacy of Leadership Black History Award (2016). Chairman Hugley and his wife, Georgia State Representative/Minority Whip Carolyn Fleming Hugley, have two adult children and two grandchildren.

MOVING FORWARD

TALLADEGA NAMED “SCHOOL OF THE MONTH”

TC Update, January 25, 2019

CHAIRMAN HUGLEY HONORED

Members of Talladega College’s baseball team, which won its first-ever Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) title last year, are champions on and off the field. Recently, when an employee at a local laundromat mentioned that she needed to move, Bryan Marquez, Jorge Rodriguez, and Emilio Martinez quickly offered to assist.

“They know me because they come to the laundromat often. They call me ‘mom’ and teach me a few words in Spanish. When I mentioned that I was going to have to move, they volunteered to help. I offered to pay them, but they refused to take money. I offered gas money, but they refused to take that. I offered food, but they wouldn’t take anything. Then, the day after they helped me move, they came back after baseball practice and helped me rearrange my heavy furniture,” said Ms. Brenda Putt, who was so touched by the baseball champions’ kindness and character that she was moved to tears.

Mr. Emmanuel Piña ’13 was recently named director of alumni affairs for Talladega College. The former Tornado baseball player and McNair Scholar, who earned a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Talladega and a Master of Science in leadership from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, said, “I look forward to reaching out to alumni that we have not been in contact with. I also want to build a stronger relationship with those that we are in contact with, and update our database so that we can more easily maintain contact with all alumni. They are a part of the Talladega family and we want them to know that they are important to us.”

Mr. Piña, whose parents are from the Dominican Republic, is a native New Yorker and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. He is fluent in Spanish and previously taught high school mathematics.

Tracey Elimimian, a student in Talladega’s new online Master of Science in Computer Information Systems (MSCIS) program, believes that completing the program will advance her career while also contributing to her personal growth.

“I was attracted to Talladega’s program because it offers a focus in two critical areas - cybersecurity and health informatics. I’ve completed two classes now, and I find the program to be intriguing. The instructors keep your interest sparked, and the discussion board, virtual meetings, and audio versions of the book make learning so convenient. The interactive labs allow me to put into practice everything I learn,” said Ms. Elimimian, the daughter of Dr. Jonathan Elimimian, dean of the Division of Business and Administration.

Applications for Spring II semester are due March 15, 2019. Classes begin April 8, 2019. For details, contact Dr. Syed Raza at [email protected] or visit talladega.libguides.com/mastersprogram.
