This workshop outlines simple steps that will make the essay writing portions of the STAAR and EOC assessment less threatening. Participants will explore approaches for secondary ESL and ELA teachers to scaffold instruction and to boost students’ performance on the writing portion of the STAAR and EOC. The workshop includes an opportunity to examine the required elements of the essays and learn how to help students incorporate these elements into their writing. As a culminating activity, we will dissect essays and analyze specific attributes that helped intermediate English learners earn the perfect score. Participants will receive a resource that includes items such as: Sentence and paragraph building activities Graphic organizers with sentence stems and paragraph frames Color-coding and revision activities Who should attend: ELAR Teachers in Grades 4 & 7 Teachers of English I & II 2020 AUG Moving English Learners Forward on the STAAR/EOC Writing presented by Natalia Heckman calls Goose Creek ISD her home and her alma mater – that was where she started her career in education. Trained in Russia as a technical writer and a translator, Natalia never thought about becoming a teacher, but after her first year in a classroom, she knew that teaching was her calling and her mission. Natalia has taught English and ESOL classes, assisted teachers as an ELA and Social Studies Instructional Coach, and served as an ESL/ Bilingual program specialist for GCCISD. She currently pursues her passion for linguistics and education as an educational consultant with Seidlitz Education. Natalia holds a bachelor’s degree in literature from the University of Houston at Clear Lake and a master’s degree in school administration from Lamar University. 26 & 27 8:30AM - 11:30AM CST ONLINE via ZOOM

This workshop outlines simple steps that will make the essay writing

portions of the STAAR and EOC assessment less threatening.

Participants will explore approaches for secondary ESL and ELA

teachers to scaffold instruction and to boost students’ performance

on the writing portion of the STAAR and EOC. The workshop includes

writer and a translator, Natalia never thought
