FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents,
Yesterday the students from kindy to year 6 engaged in a vibrant array of activities for Science Week. I am particularly proud of the students who pre-sented their science experiment to the whole school and shared their scien-tific knowledge. Our special guests, parents Sanjay and Sasha provided students with a real life experience of a career in science. Thank you Mrs Johnson and staff for organising an inspiring day.
Not long now until the Year 5 and 6 students attend camp. It is a highlight for students and staff. Special thanks to the P&C Association for donating funds to subsidize the camp costs for each student.
Mt Claremont PS National School Opinion Survey 2018. It is a requirement for all public schools to use the National School Opinion Survey every two years with:
Parents
Staff
Students (years 5 and 6)
All parents are asked to respond to the survey and the goal is to have a high response rate. The survey is anonymous. The data from the three surveys is collected on behalf of the School Council and will be included in the school’s Annual Report 2018 and the school’s self-assessment pro-cesses. Click on the link to complete the Parent MCPS National School Opin-ion Survey 2018 https://www.schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/dcnpp8eR
Don’t delay, click today! The survey closes on Friday 24 August.
Independent Public School 2019
The school is striving for IPS status in 2019. On Monday 20 August Scott Gladman the School Council Chairperson and I will give a presentation to a panel of IPS principals. Our narrative will include the data from the recent MCPS Culture Survey, school context, and the benefits of IPS to improve outcomes for students, staff and parents in the school.
Scott has been generous with his time by attending IPS workshops during work hours.
NAPLAN Online
Students in years 3 and 5 will participate in a NAPLAN readiness mini test on Tuesday 28 August. There are challenges in doing NAPLAN online as reported recently in the media but we will do our best. All NAPLAN assess-ments will be online in 2019.

Staff changes
Mrs Bianca Sussovich (kindy teacher) is leaving the school having accepted a fulltime position at West Leederville PS. Bianca has been a wonderful early childhood teacher and we wish her all the best in her future endeavours. A process to select a new teacher for Wednesday in kindy has commenced. Eggi Retter has won the position as a permanent cleaner. Edward Hinder is appointed as gardener for term 3 and the permanent po-sition, 3 days a week will be advertised on Jobs WA.
Preparing for 2019
It is crazy, but schools are already preparing for next year. Please inform the school in writing if your children
are not returning to this school in 2019. Email [email protected]
I believe the P&C Association is still looking for parents to fill positions and I encourage you to help out and vol-
unteer whenever you can.
Congratulations to Hayden Rawstorne on his outstanding achievement gaining first place in the Australian Kara-
te Federation National Championship. We are very proud of you Hayden!
In this newsletter you will read some thoughtful quotes from students in Year 3/4, Room 2 which are inspired by
our school motto We Care and the curriculum in Health Education. Well done Mrs Rodgers and Room 2 for link-
ing curriculum with your class performance at assembly.
There are many events and activities coming up this term, and hope you appreciate and enjoy the opportunities.

Library Notice Book Week 2018
For Book Week this year we will be recognizing the important role book marks play in
the protection and preservation of books Instead of prizes for costumes as we have
done in previous years, students will design and decorate their own bookmark
(template provided). This will be a class activity, with two winners chosen from each
room, or group for Kindy, as decided by the respective classroom teacher.
The successful students will be announced at the pre-primary school assembly on Friday 17 August. Each win-
ner will receive a Dymocks gift voucher. It is still a Book Week celebration, so don’t forget to dress up as your
favourite book character on the day.
Mrs Straiton Library Officer Lost Property In the undercover area you will find a blue tub with Lost Property. “Property “meaning it belongs to someone!
Students have a responsibility to care for their own belongings. The Year 6 Care Captains regularly returns
items to children that are labelled with a student name. There are a number of items that have been misplaced,
were labelled and unfortunately cannot be found. Hats and jumpers are disappearing! Please check school uni-
form items and return items to school that not yours.

Start Smart Incursion
On Monday 6th August all students from Years 1-6 participated some very energetic and engaging
money workshops.
The Start Smart Program aims to change the way young people learn about money and the enthusias-tic presenter, Melissa Allen certainly got the students' attention.
Throughout the day Melissa took on various money super hero personas to educate the students about money management and left a lasting impression on all of us about how we spend our money!

Room 2 Assembly
The students arrived to start the day buzzing with excitement!
Friday 3 August was an anticipated day for the students in Room 2. After a week of practising their
parts in readiness for the assembly, the day could not come sooner!
The students presented three short items. The first was reciting a poem titled, ‘Happy Birthday To You’
by Dr Seuss, which reminded us the importance of being yourself. ‘We Care’ was a piece which devel-
oped from our Health study about being a positive influence. They came up with three strategies to
achieve this at our school:
1. Show respect by what you say and what you do.
2. Show empathy by putting yourself in someone else’s shoes.
3. Know that we are all in different in some way.
The students wrote about what it means to them and together , we illustrated it with photos in a digital
presentation.
Our final item was a song titled ‘Feeling Groovy’ by Paul Simon. In this song, Paul Simon reminds us
to slow down and appreciate the simple pleasures in life.
It is always wonderful to see so many parents attend the students’ special day and we certainly under-
stand that there are also many who cannot make it. The students enjoyed the audience very much and
while they were all a little nervous, loved the overall experience!

Science Week
Science week was a great success and the morning began with presentations from 2 parents. Sasha Thompson
(Marine Biologist) who spoke about her work with turtles, shark tagging and educating people about marine ani-
mals. Sanjay Vansheesswaran (Environmental Engineer) spoke about the importance of water and how he re-
mediates polluted water ways and the environment. The speakers discussed solving problems asking questions
and that they are ’Change Makers’ which is the theme of this year’s Science Week. Thank you to Sasha and
Sanjay for inspiring our students in the field of science.
Tabloid Activities Classes rotated through a wide range of activities including; tinker trays, catapults, rainmak-
ing, skittles, boat making, guaratrope, aerodynamics (paper planes), static electricity (snake charming), electron-
ics, bubble designs, and sports science. Team work, designing, testing and observing were key to many of the
activities. A Special thank you to all teachers and educational assistants who ensured that children were offered
some amazing science opportunities.
Science Quiz It was wonderful to see so many students participating in the science quiz and the fact that stu-
dents had an opportunity to talk about science with their families. The winners will be announced tomorrow morn-
ing at community singing.
Science Models/Experiments/Projects There were some wonderful projects presented yesterday. Mt
Claremont has some amazing budding scientists who explained their way through numerous science concepts. A
special thank you to all parents who supported their child during science week. Some of the models are currently
on display in the administration area.

In recent weeks, students have been busy designing, colouring and painting their entries for our school-based Book Week poster competition. Students have worked well on their posters and can be proud of their effort and creativity. During the assembly on Friday 17 August, I will announce the winner and 'highly commended' in each of the three age categories of Junior, Middle and Upper Primary. The winning students will receive a certificate and prize and the 'highly commended' students will receive a certificate.
Where possible, students' posters will be displayed in their classrooms or in the adjacent wet area for parents to view.
Students are currently working on their IGA Perth Royal Show entries and I am excited to see the creative work that our young budding artists are producing. I will soon begin choosing students' artwork to enter in both the 'Cat' and the 'Pigeon and Poultry' schools art competitions. The artwork will be displayed in the pavilions for the dura-tion of the show. Stay tuned for more information to follow in the next newsletter.

Congratulations Hayden
This year's Australian Karate Federation National Championship took place in Caloundra, Queensland, from 3-5 Au-gust. It was a very exciting experience for Hayden to represent WA with over 600 other competitors from around Austral-ia. There were 14 competitors in Hay-den's division with 4 rounds of sparring which lasted about 1.5 hours. Hayden was lucky to have only 1 point scored on him during his rounds. He won all his matches and was awarded the gold med-als the Australian National Champion for boys U12 Kumite. His goal is to represent Australia at the next junior Oceania Championships in 2020.
