HOG October

Meeting Recap…

Bulldog led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Kathy Suban began announcing we had 5 new members present at this meeting and another 6

registered over the last month taking our total current membership to 383. Be sure to check

out the ‘Welcome New Members’ section in this newsletter for photos and to learn more

about the 5 who attended this month’s meeting. You might even recognize some of the “new”

members if you frequent Biker Bobs. Kathy reminded everyone that you must renew the

National Membership as well as our local chapter to stay current. New members registering in

the remainder of 2015 will automatically be extended through 2016.

Steve Pearce read the Treasurer’s report on behalf of Kurt Sebaly who was unable to attend

this meeting. He advised if anyone would like a copy of the report, please reach out to Kurt

directly.

Larry Suban advised Buck and many members of the Road Captains were in Texas doing a

competition. He advised that we are accepting applications to become a Road Captain next

year at this and next month’s meeting. Contact Buck or any of the Road Captains to get an

application. Larry also passed along that the organizers of the Soroptimist Ride held in

September wanted to thank all the volunteers and Road Captains for helping to make the ride

a success. Final bills are still being paid so the current total of funds raised was not yet shared.

Larry also reminded everyone the skills training is still being held on Monday’s from 4pm-6pm

weather permitting until the snow begins to fall. Skills is open to all HOG chapter members.

Terri Rowe announced the Volunteer roster on the Chapter website is updated with points up

to the Toy Run. There are only a few events left this year to get your points in before the

Volunteer Dinner invites go out for 2016 so make sure your points are updated and you get in

what you need! Remember the website is mobile friendly and can be synced up to iPhones

and Androids. Terri advised she is continuing to archive the newsletters she has from 2008-

2012. Her and our Historian, Marty Kerstens, will be working on Historical updates from 1998

on.

Perry Sanford provided a recap of some of the fun that we had throughout 2015 including

some great opportunities we all had to stay in touch and do what we all love to do the most,

Ride! Some of the highlighted events were the Blessing of the Bikes in April, 4 Corners Bike

Nights, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in June, our 1st (hopefully) annual Ride-In/Drive-In Movie

night in July, any various trips throughout the Summer including rides to MargaritaVille, Mud

Hens Game, Turkeyville, Chapter Getaway, and the Millersburg Amish Ride. Thanks to

everyone who volunteered their time to ensure we had great fun with these and all the other

events this year. He recapped the bike nights were coming to an end this month for the

season, however keep an eye on the calendar, Motown HOG Facebook page and the Motown

HOG calendar for more events to be held during the off season. Some upcoming events and

other topics he shared were:

Nov 14 – Firekeepers Casino Bus ride- Contact Patty King for tickets. Some tickets

may be still available! $40 per person

Nov 18 – Meet and Eat at Classic Tavern inside the 10Pins bowling alley on Fort

Street in Trenton.

Nov 22 – Vets Dinner – Need volunteers to help serve and pick up Vets

Nov 27/28 – Goodfellows Paper Drive – Contact Denise Voegele to sign up to

volunteer to collect donations on Middlebelt and Merriman by the 7-11

Dec 5 - Polar Bear Run to support Road Captains

Dec 12 – HOG Chapter Christmas Party – Tickets available at meetings for $30 per

person. To be held at Silver Shores again this year.

Be sure to sign up for the planning of 2016. Time/Date TBA

As always, be sure to check the HOG calendar at http://motownhog.com for the

latest updates

Diane Dombecki restated the Casino Bus trip is around the corner, Nov 14th. As of the Oct

meeting we had 6 spaces left. It’s a fun time that starts at Biker Bobs at 11am for a chance to

win gift baskets and 50/50. Bus leaves Biker Bobs at 1230pm. See Patty King for more details.

The Vet dinner to be held at the Legion Hall on November 22nd is in need of volunteers to help

with prep, setup, and serving. They could also use help from people willing to assist on the

bus rides to pick up and take the vets back home. See Diane if you are available to help make

this event awesome for our Vets.

Sally Webb announced we had 98 members present and signed in during the Oct meeting.

From those signed in, the latest lucky member of the month selected was Chris Francis! See

the ‘Member of the Month’ section of the newsletter to learn more about Chris! Sally also

mentioned being out during the July and August meetings so she does not have all the details

on all the new members from those months, so please take a look at the Summer 2015 edition

of the newsletter and reach out to Sally if you have any details to share on these members so

we can properly welcome them to our family!

Ken Kirk provided us with some safety tips when coming to a stop to make sure we all stay

safe out there:

1) Always have an out

a. Don’t pull up to the bumper in front of you

b. Plan the “escape” as you are rolling up to the stop

2) Check your rear view mirror frequently

a. Even though you and the person behind you may be stopped, the person 2

cars back can be texting and fail to brake causing a chain reaction eventually

connecting with you

3) Always leave yourself in 1st gear. Never go into Neutral at a stop

a. Be ready to twist the throttle to get out of the way. That second it takes to get

into gear can be the difference between your escape being successful or not.

4) Keep Glow Sticks in your safety pouch should you need them

a. These are inexpensive safety tools available at many Dollar stores and can help

to mark your emergency status at night time.

Brian Yinger reminded us of the S.E.E. principle (Search Evaluate Execute). Be sure to use all

your senses to see what is going on around you to help determine what your response will

need to be to slow down or speed up. Always think of the “What if.” Attend the skills training

hosted by the Road Captains on Mondays at Biker Bob’s from 4pm-6pm to improve your ability

to execute the maneuver that can save your life. For the Ladies out there, the Road Captains

also offer a Ladies only course that you can take advantage of during the year. The next Ladies

Skills is planned for Nov 1st.

Steve Pearce returned to touch base on a few topics:

Toy Run / Goodfellows Paper Drive- Thanks to Lonesome Dave and the committee

for raising roughly $2400 and toys. With this run combined with the upcoming

Goodfellows Paper Drive we will be able to raise a lot for the kids of Westland this

year. Be sure to contact Denise Voegele if you can assist with the Paper drive Nov

28/29th. There is usually donuts and coffee to keep us warm.

Wounded America - Steve advised the dog tags from the Wounded America run have

arrived. Contact Steve if you have yet to pick yours up at the October meeting.

Trooper Chad Wolf - Special thanks to those who attended/supported Trooper Chad

Wolf’s memorial fund raising event for his family that was left behind after his

untimely death. It was a great community turn out and they had raised $17,721 to

help with expenses.

Polar Bear Run – Hoping the weather holds out for our Polar Bear ride in December

but since we are all bikers, a little cold weather can’t hold us down! Even if it snows,

you can still come out to support the road captains in your cages! This run helps the

Road Captains continue their skills training both in riding and first aid assistance as

well as helps to fund the overall cost of equipment required. We also tie this in with

a charity for the hungry by asking for cans of food to support local food and bread

shelters.

Road Captain Applications – Another reminder that the Road Captains are accepting

applications for 2016 season. Applications are available at the Oct and Nov chapter

meetings or you can reach out to a Road Captain to get more information.

Riders – We had 43 bikes ride in tonight to the chapter meeting.

Kenn Rowe recapped the following:

Thanks to everyone for a great year thus far and reported on all the rides we hosted

we had 0 mishaps and raised a lot of money for some very worthy causes. Thank you

to all the volunteers and officers that made the rides so great!

He reminded everyone to check their volunteer points as we are winding down and

the opportunities to get your points in for the volunteer dinner are getting fewer as

the weather starts to change.

He also asked that when we do volunteer at Biker Bobs that we be respectful of their

business and if we are going to wear a Harley Davidson shirt, be sure that it has the

Biker Bob logo or at least no other HD dealer logo visible on it.

LOH is working to setup the Gift Wrapping again this year at Biker Bobs during the

Christmas season. There will be a sign up sheet at the November meeting.

Riding season is drawing to an end, however we can all still get together at Skores

Lane on Monday nights at 730pm. Be part of the league or just come out for some

fun. See the Bowling pics further down in the newsletter.

Thank you to Cindy Quasarano and the Motown Road Captains for hosting the Ladies

Skills event. We had 18 ladies show up to enhance their riding ability. Check out the

photos further in this newsletter and be sure to spread the word that there will be 1

more opportunity this year for ladies only skills on Nov 1st. Contact Cindy or one of

the Road Captains for more details.

Did you Know?? Submitted by our Historian, Marty Kerstens

William Harley and the Davidson brothers began designing their first engine circa 1900 with the help of Emile Kruger and Ole Evinrude (of outboard motor fame). The original 10.2 cubic inch engine cranked out a whopping two horsepower! It was eventually bolted to a bicycle frame, and the first HD was born in 1903.

Although off to a slow start, people began to take notice and appreciate HD's early engineering of their motorcycles. Consequently, two HD's were sold in 1904, eight sold in 1905, and 50 in 1906. By 1907, production and risen to 152 bikes, and the company was off and running!

OCTOBER 2015

Lonnie Cameron –Also known as ‘Cam’ lives in Warren with his wife, Alicia, and two girls. He is an App Engineer. He

has been riding for the past 21 years most recently on his 2015 Road Glide. We look forward to seeing him riding in any

one of his favorite spots (aka, everywhere). Cam’s favorite hobbies include riding and wrenching…yep he will fit in well

with our chapter!

Jim Schulz –‘Jimmy the Saint’ as he is also known is a waiter at Sommelier and has been riding for 36 years and of those

the past 27 were on the street. He enjoys riding everywhere on his 2010 HD Fatboy! Besides riding, Jimmy is also the host

of an Internet Radio Talk Show called ‘Bikes, Babes & Booze with Jim & Scott’ on Caveradiobroadcasting.com. He also

was the Asst. State Coordinator for 2 Million Bikers to DC for the 9/11 Honor Ride. Way to show your support Jimmy! We

are looking forward to seeing him out on some of our future rides.

Bob Demattia- Bob’s face might look familiar to you if you frequent that awesome motorcycle store on Telegraph Road

in Taylor. You know the one. The one with the famous character face on the side of the building! Yep, that’s him, Biker

Bob or as his wife, Kimmy, and friends might call him, Bobby! His personal bike he rides is his 1991 Heritage but owning a

HD dealership lends him a special luxury to be able to call all the bikes his favorite to ride whatever and whenever he

wants! He has over 50+ years riding experience so by this time, wherever he rides is considered his favorite spot! Looking

forward to seeing you around Bob!

Rachel Hessler – Rachel has a child named Terra and lives in Ferndale. She is the General Manager at Biker Bobs in

Taylor. She and her boyfriend, Joel, enjoy riding the 2004 Fatboy when she is not “test ridding” some of the latest models

from the dealership. She has been riding for 7 years and her favorite riding location is in Utah. When not enjoying the

perks of the job she enjoys gardening, hiking, antiquing, and music. She is happy and proud to become an official Motown

HOG member and we are excited to have her join!

Joel McCure –aka ‘Jelly Roll’ lives in Fernadale with his girlfriend, Rachel. Besides enjoying cruising around on the 04

Fatboy for the past 5 months he spends his work time as a Musician. His favorite place to ride so far has been Hines Park

Drive. His hobbies appropriately include music as well as food and travel. No wonder Rachel listed music as a hobby!

Name/Nickname: Chris Francis

Favorite Food: Cheeseburger

Favorite Color: Doesn’t Have one

Favorite Book: Anything in the ‘Dragon

Riders of Pern’ series

Favorite Movie: The Fifth Element

Favorite Music/Song: Classic Rock but will

listen to just about anything as long as it

is music!

Favorite Quote/Saying:

“Far better it is to dare mighty things,

to win glorious triumphs, even though

checkered by failure, than to take rank

with those poor spirits who neither enjoy

much nor suffer much, because they live in

the gray twilight that knows not victory

nor defeat”

Theodore Roosevelt - 4/10/1899

from the speech "The Strenuous Life"

Bio – Chris came to Motown HOG 2 years ago

from that “other” chapter which he says will

remain nameless. Their loss of his charm and

photographic abilities as a member of their photo

crew is our gain! We are happy to have him part

of our family now!

Chris lives in Livonia and has a 20 year old

daughter named, Alexandria. He spends his

responsible grown up time during the day as a

Computer Systems Manager.

When he lets his inner child out to play, he likes

to ride his 2011 Road Glide Ultra staying clear of

all those nasty traffic signals. His preferred

riding is on smooth roads with no traffic and no

stopping!

Some of Chris’s favorite things to keep him busy are

motorcycle touring, Photography, Amateur (“HAM”)

Radio, and Home Brewing. But on Nov 1st maybe one

of us can buy him a brew for his birthday!
