Introduction

M2U and M2-200 Motors

General InformationThese motors offer a combination of low cost, pressures to 138 bar (2000psi), speeds to 2800 r/min, torques of2.0, 2.8 or 4.0 Nm/6.9 bar (18, 25 or 35lb. in./100 psi), flange or foot mounting, and choice of port locations.

RotationM2U motors operate in one directiononly, and rotation must be specifiedwhen ordering. Shaft rotation of M2-200 motors can be reversed simplyby reversing the direction of flowthrough the motor ports.

Low Speed CapabilityMinimum speed can vary between 50and 100 r/min , depending upon motor size and characteristics of thedriven load.

CharacteristicsAn economical, efficient and compactmeans of applying variable speed, rotary hydraulic power, these motorshave variable horsepower (constanttorque) characteristics. They can bestalled

under load without damage whenprotected by a relief valve.

Indirect Drive CapabilityRugged two-bearing constructionpermits motors to be used in direct orindirect drive installations. Indirect driveapplications require approval by VickersEngineering Department.

25M - 50M Motors

General InformationThese high speed, high pressuremotors offer a choice of 12 torqueratings from 4,7 to 33,9 Nm/6,9 bar (42to 300 lb. in./100 psi); speeds from 400to 3600 r/min continuous and 4000r/min intermittent; pressures to 155 bar(2250 psi) continuous and 172 bar(2500 psi) intermittent; reversible shaftrotation; flange or foot mounting.

RotationShaft rotation can be reversed simply byreversing the direction of flow throughthe motor ports. When properlyprotected by valves, the motor may beused for rapid cycle reversing or stalledwithout damage.

Low Speed OperationMinimum speed is normally 100 r/min.Lower speeds are obtainable, depending upon torque requirementsand the nature of the load.

Replaceable CartridgeRotary motion is developed within thedrive cartridge which consists principallyof a cam ring, rotor, ten vanes, and twopressure plates. the cartridge is boltedtogether so parts can be servicedseparately or as an assembly.Replaceable cartridges permit motoroverhauls in just 10 minutes. A cartridgecan be replaced without removing theunit from the machine, and usuallywithout disconnecting hydraulic lines.

Series Operation25M - 50M motors are suited to series applications. Inlet and outlet portscan be pressurized simultaneouslywithout affecting service life or operating smoothness.

Indirect Drive CapabilityDouble-row bearings are available forincreased radial load capacity. Indirectdrive applications require approval byVickers Engineering Department.

Features and BenefitsM2U and M2-200 Motors

Low-wear DesignTwo internal inlet chambers arediametrically opposed as are two outletchambers. This construction eliminatesbearing loads resulting from pressure, amajor cause of wear in designs withoutthis feature.

Installation FlexibilityThe motor’s cover can be assembled in different positions with respect to the body. To change the relative location of the ports, it is necessary onlyto remove four cover bolts and rotate the cover to the desired position. This allows optimum positioning to suitconnecting piping.

High EfficiencyOptimum running clearances andhydraulic balance assure sustainedhigh efficiency over the life of the motor.

Smooth OperationInertia of rotating parts is low ... partsare symmetrical, providing dynamicbalance and freedom from vibration.

25M - 50M Motors

High EfficiencyA unique dual pressure plate designresults in low internal leakage andoverall operating efficiencies up to 90%. Efficiency varies with motor size, pressure, speed, and fluid viscosity and temperature.

Mounting FlexibilityThe motor’s cover can be assembled in four positions with respect to the body. Changing port positions isaccomplished by simply rotating thecover, and the cartridge which is pinnedto the cover, in 90 increments, thusproviding the optimum mounting forconnecting piping.

Easy to ServiceThe drive cartridge is accessible byremoving the motor’s cover and cannormally be replaced in ten minuteswithout removing the motor from themachine. The torque capability ofmotors within the same model seriescan be changed by changing thecartridge or cam ring.

Low-wear Design25M - 50M motors are hydraulicallybalanced to reduce wear andheat-producing friction. All internal inletchambers are equally and diametricallyopposed. As a result, pressure inducedradial loads are balanced. Shaftbearings only have to carry externalloads so wear is greatly reduced.

Proven ReliabilityFor more than two decades, thereliability of these high performancemotors has been field proven on avariety of machinery applications.

Foot Mounts

The foot bracket kits tabulated belowcan be used to mount motors havingstandard SAE-J 744 2-bolt A, B, or Cmounting flanges. These designationscorrespond to -A-, -B-, and -C- letters inthe foot bracket kit model number. Eachkit includes a bracket and screws formounting to the motor. Kits are notincluded with motors and must beordered separately by model number.

Also available are a bracket (partnumber 279625) and mounting screws (part number 214794, 2required) to fit the SAE D mountingflange of 50M motors.

Application and Service Information

Motor Characteristics

Minimum Operating SpeedNormal speeds can be as low as 50 to100 r/min for M2U and M2-200 motors, depending upon motor size and characteristics of the driven load.

The minimum speed for 25M - 50Mmotors is normally 100 r/min. Lowerspeeds are permissible, dependingupon torque requirements andcharacteristics of the driven load.

Stall TorqueMotor stall torque ranges between 65%and 100% of 1200 r/min running torquefor a given pressure differential acrossthe motor. This is dependent on thespecific angular position of the shaft atstall and the volume supply of fluid tothe motor.

Retarding and BrakingMotors may be used as retarders butnot as hydraulic brakes. When a motoris used as a retarder, adequatepressure must be provided at the inletport to prevent cavitation. Systemsrequiring positive holding capabilities(braking) must be provided withexternally operated mechanical holdingdevices.

The maximum pressure obtainable in a system using a motor as a retarder(pumping) is dependent upon speed. At speeds below 1000 r/min, maximumobtainable pressure is proportionallydiminished relative to speed as speedapproaches stall.

Consult your Vickers representativebefore using motors as retarders, or ifbraking is required.

Mounting Dimensions

RequirementsDimensional control requirements of thecustomer’s mounting pad to which themotor is affixed are as follows.

Pilot DiameterConcentricity of the customer’s female pilot diameter relative to the effective axis of the female drive must be within0,10 mm (.004 in.) total indicatorreading. The clearance between themale and female pilot diameters mustbe +0,01 mm to +0,05 mm (+.0005 to +.0020 inch.)

Mounting FaceThe customer’s mounting face to whichthe motor is affixed must be square tothe axis of the female drive within 0,04mm per mm (.0015 inch per inch).

ShaftsDimensions of keyed shaft receiversmust be between +0,003 and +0,03 mm(+.0001 and +.0010 inch) of themaximum shaft diameter shown on theVickers installation drawing.

DrivesDirect drive through a flexible couplingis recommended but belt, chain or geardrives can be used. Indirect driveapplications require approval by VickersEngineering Department.

Circuitry Requirements

ValvingIn the event of acceleration ordeceleration of the drive or drivenmembers, overrunning loads or systembleed-off, control valving and circuitrymust provide a continuous supply of oilto the motor. This supply should besufficient to prevent transient orcontinuous cavitation, but not so largeas to result in speeds beyond published maximums.

Protect against hydraulic surgepressures (inlet, outlet or drain) appliedto or generated by the motor. Reliefvalving must prevent surges fromexceeding published pressure ratings.

M2-200 Motors (all)Control valving used with M2-200motors must have an open centercrossover feature to prevent cavitationwhen the shaft is subject to overrunning loads.

M2-200 Standard ModelsBack pressure must not exceed: 75% ofsupply pressure at 1800 r/min; 80% at1200; 85% at 600. (Supply and backpressures are actual operatingpressures at the ports of the motor.) Incircuits where back pressure exists, arelief valve is required in both the inletand outlet ports.

Consequently, for applications wherecavitation, back pressure and/or seriestype circuits exist, an M2-200 “S2” typemotor is recommended.

M2-200 “S2” ModelsPilot pressure must be continuouslysupplied at the S2 port (page 9) at alevel equal to system pressure plus5,2 bar (75 psi) minimum. This may beobtained by using a check valve in thesystem supply and with pilot pressuretaken from between the pump and thisvalve.

PipingHydraulic lines should be as short andhave as large an inside diameter aspossible. Where lines are long, it isdesirable to adapt to a larger capacityline than a motor’s ports specify. Inlet, outlet and drain lines should not besmaller than the nominal port sizeshown on installation drawings.

There should be as few bends andfittings in lines as possible.High-pressure lines and fittings arerestrictive to flow and may result inexcessive pressure drop through thesystem. They should be used onlywhere necessary in a pressure line.

Drain ConnectionThe case drain line must be full size, unrestricted, and connected from thedrain port directly to the reservoir in such a manner that the housing remains filled with fluid. The line must be piped to prevent siphoning and mustterminate below the reservoir fluid level. No other lines are to be connected tothis drain line.

Pressure surges at the case drainconnection may not exceed 1,7 bar (25 psi). Normal pressure is not toexceed 0,7 bar (10 psi). Minimumpressure is zero.

Application and Service Information

FluidsFluid TypeMotors can be used with anti-wearhydraulic oil, or automotive typecrankcase oil (designations SC, SD, SE, SF, or SG) per SAE J183 JUN89.

Before starting the motor, fill its casewith oil. The case must be kept full at alltimes to provide internal lubrication.

TemperatureNormal operation (at rated conditions) is based on the use of petroleum oil inthe 49 to 65C (120 to 150F) range. An operating temperature of49C (120F) is recommended.Normally, temperatures should notexceed 65C (150F).

ViscosityThe oil viscosity range with the motorrunning should be 13-54 cSt (70-250SUS).

Application GuidanceTo ensure optimum motorperformance in conjunction with yourspecific application, consult yourVickers representative if your: Oil viscosity at operating temperatureis not within 13-54 cSt (70-250 SUS) Oil viscosity at startup is is in excessof 860 cSt (4000 SUS) Operating temperature is not within 38 to 65C (100 to 150F). With proper application and fluidconsideration, a greater temperaturerange is permissible. System requires fire resistant fluid Required minimum speed is less than100 r/min Application has overunning loads Needs require applicationassistance

Fluid CleanlinessProper fluid condition is essential forlong and satisfactory life of hydrauliccomponents and systems. Hydraulicfluid must have the correct balance ofcleanliness, materials, and additives forprotection against wear of components, elevated viscosity, and inclusion of air.

Essential information on the correctmethods for treating hydraulic fluid isincluded in Vickers publication 561“Vickers Guide to SystemicContamination Control” available from your local Vickers distributor or by

contacting Vickers, Incorporated.Recommendations on filtration and theselection of products to control fluidcondition are included in 561.

Recommended cleanliness levels, using petroleum oil under commonconditions, are based on the highestfluid pressure levels in the system andare coded in the chart below. Fluidsother than petroleum, severe servicecycles, or temperature extremes arecause for adjustment of thesecleanliness codes. See Vickerspublication 561 for exact details.

Vickers products, as any components, will operate with apparent satisfaction influids with higher cleanliness codesthan those described. Othermanufacturers will often recommendlevels above those specified.Experience has shown, however, thatlife of any hydraulic component isshortened in fluids with highercleanliness codes than those listedbelow. These codes have been provento provide a long, trouble-free servicelife for the products shown, regardlessof the manufacturer.
