The Sheas are part of the Erainn clan. Mythically, they trace back to Oengus Bolg, god of Lightning, maker of Lug’s Spear. There are several branches from this tree, one of them being Corca Dhuibhne. That was a great clan in West Kerry, comprised of the O’Connells and the O’Sheas. The O’Sheas (O Seaghdha) ruled the present Iveragh region in West Kerry. They were driven out during the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland in the 12th century. Some of them proceeded to Kilkenny, where they became foremost among the “Ten tribes of Kilkenny”. The rest lurked around Kerry and Cork. My ancestors were among those who lurked around Cork.

My great grandfather, Dennis Shea, departed County Cork during the Great Potato Famine. He ultimately made his way to St Louis, where he found various means of employment until the outbreak of the Civil War. Family Legend has it that he volunteered for the Union Army one morning for a small enlistment bonus; but then, upon learning that the Confederate recruiter in the area was offering the same size bonus plus a bottle of whiskey, he reversed his loyalties and enlisted in the Confederate Army. At some point after the War, he settled and raised a family in Cincinnati. One of his sons, Frank J. Shea, married Catherine Mahon in Cincinnati in 1905. Catherine had emigrated to America at age 18, landing at Ellis Island in 1900. She made her way to Cincinnati, where several relatives had already settled. One of her distant relations had opened a bar in Price Hill, known as the Crow’s Nest. She lived on the third floor of that establishment for her first few months in America; but eventually made her way to the East Side, where she followed the normal course for a young female Irish immigrant, becoming a washerwoman for wealthy Hyde Park families. She moonlighted as a bootlegger during the Prohibition Era, and upon the repeal of the ill-conceived 18th Amendment in the early 30’s, she opened an Irish Bar on Edward’s Road. She named this pub the “Edge Inn,” because it was situated on the edge of Norwood, Oakley, and Hyde Park. She also found time to bear Frank 10 children, the youngest of whom, Daniel, was born in 1926. He grew up in Hyde Park, attended Purcell High School and enlisted in the Army on his graduation day. During WWII he fought across Europe, earning two Bronze Stars and Three Purple Hearts. He marched in a VE Parade in Innsbruck in May of 1945, and was then alerted for deployment to the Pacific where he would get the opportunity to participate in the Invasion of Japan. His deployment to that theater was preempted by the dropping of the 2 Atomic bombs in August of that year. Curiously enough, he never expressed any moral misgivings about our use of those weapons to bring the war to a close. On returning home, he attended Xavier University on the GI Bill and married a beautiful Italian girl, named Annette Massarella. Ten months later, I was born, and was followed pretty quickly by four more siblings, a brother and three sisters. Our parents provided us the priceless advantage of a strict, values-based – truly idyllic – upbringing. Our Dad was an annual attendee at the Friendly Sons Banquet; but, sadly, died two months after I returned home from a 23-year Army career. Our Mother still lives a full, productive and vibrant life at age 86. She drives her car, and her computer, with remarkable facility; and she still reserves the right to spank us when we deserve it.

Major General Patrick Brady attended O’Dea High School in Seattle, Washington, an all boys school run by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, where he was active in sports. While in college at Seattle University, he initially hated the compulsory ROTC program, and was kicked out. Later, realizing that he would probably be drafted after graduation, he reentered ROTC to enter the service as an officer. After graduation he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army

Medical Service Corps in 1959, and later graduated from the United States Army Aviation School at Fort Rucker, Alabama.

General Brady served 34 years in the Army in duty stations across the world - in Berlin during the building of the Wall, as commander of the DMZ in Korea, in the Dominican Republic, in the Pentagon as chief spokesman for the Army and for 2 years in Vietnam. During two tours in Vietnam he rescued over 5000 wounded and flew over 2500 combat missions. He is identified in the Encyclopedia of the Vietnam War as the top helicopter pilot in that war and is one of two Vietnam soldiers to earn both the Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Service Cross, our nation’s second highest award. With over 70 awards, some observers claim he is the most decorated living veteran. He is a member of both the Army Aviation and Dust Off Halls of Fame.

Brady is the author along with his daughter, Meghan, of Dead Men Flying, an account of the tremendous humanitarian effort in Vietnam. He has written for many papers and periodicals and has been a recent columnist for Hearst newspapers. General Brady has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Seattle University and an MBA from Notre Dame University. He and his wife Nancy had 6 children, Shaun, Casey, Kelly, Shannon, Terry, and Meghan, a veteran of the war in Iraq. He remains involved in many important causes, including the Medal of Honor Society’s Character Development Program for Middle and High School aged students. This program incorporates the ideals of courage and selfless service

into the school curriculum to build character and promote responsible citizenship. Its purpose is to establish Medal of Honor-related lesson plans drawing upon the ideals embodied in the Medal of Honor, and their application in daily life. It’s website is www.cmohedu.org

OMedal of Honor Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, Maj. Brady distinguished himself while serving in the Republic of Vietnam commanding a UH-1H ambulance helicopter, volunteered to rescue wounded men from a site in enemy held territory which was reported to be heavily defended and to be blanketed by fog. To reach the site he descended through heavy fog and smoke and hovered slowly along a valley trail, turning his ship sideward to blow away the fog with the backwash from his rotor blades. Despite the unchallenged, close-range enemy fire, he found the dangerously small site, where he successfully landed and evacuated 2 badly wounded South Vietnamese soldiers. He was then called to another area completely covered by dense fog where American casualties lay only 50 meters from the enemy. Two aircraft had previously been shot down and others had made unsuccessful attempts to reach this site earlier in the day. With unmatched skill and extraordinary courage, Maj. Brady made 4 flights to this embattled landing zone and successfully rescued all the wounded. On his third mission of the day Maj. Brady once again landed at a site surrounded by the enemy. The friendly ground force, pinned down by enemy fire, had been unable to reach and secure the landing zone. Although his aircraft had been badly damaged and his controls partially shot away during his initial entry into this area, he returned minutes later and rescued the remaining injured. Shortly thereafter, obtaining a replacement aircraft, Maj. Brady was requested to land in an enemy minefield where a platoon of American soldiers was trapped. A mine detonated near his helicopter, wounding 2 crewmembers and damaging his ship. In spite of this, he managed to fly 6 severely injured patients to medical aid. Throughout that day Maj. Brady utilized 3 helicopters to evacuate a total of 51 seriously wounded men, many of whom would have perished without prompt medical treatment. Maj. Brady’s bravery was in the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself and the U.S. Army.

Strengthening the Bond of the American Irish.

“I bind myself today—to the power of God to guide me, the might of God to uphold me, the wisdom of God to teach me, the eye of God to watch over me.”

From The Breastplate of St. Patrick

Our Mission: The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Foundation exists to foster strong Irish heritage by way of benevolence to the hungry and devotion to the Irish arts.

Our Vision:To become the pinnacle Foundation in the Greater Cincinnati Region for the promotion and preservation of Irish Culture, and friendly giving to the areas hungry.

Our History:On March 17, 1771 and March 17, 1784, The Society of The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick for the Relief of the Immigrant Irish was founded in Philadelphia and New York respectively. For over two centuries, both Philadelphia and New York have annually granted sums of money for the betterment of the Irish in their communities, giving to universities, hospitals, and individual scholarship. In 1868, the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in Cincinnati was founded, and thus our involvement with the spirit of the American Irish.

In 2002, the Trustees and officers of The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in Cincinnati formed The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Foundation to focus on the promotion of Irish culture and feeding the hungry in our community.

Through special fund-raising events and private donations, The Friendly Sons of St, Patrick Foundation in Cincinnati is able to support these causes as others have done for their neighbors for over two-hundred years. Today, much about our land and people has changed, but one thing has remained the same- the Irish spirit and dedication to the betterment of community.

Our Beneficiaries:The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Foundation is making a significant cultural impact in the greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky region. Since our founding, The Foundation has been providing rich cultural experiences promoting Irish heritage and arts. In additional to these culturally rich programs the foundation has shown benevolence to the areas hungry, regardless of their country of origin. One-hundred percent of our donor’s gifts go directly to those in need in our community or in support of Irish cultural events.

Page 13: Mosaic of St. Patrick Athenaeum of Ohio ~ Cincinnati

As a Foundation we are excited to continue our support and production of the Cincinnati Celtic Festival, as well as, as other regional Irish events. In recent years, The Foundation, with careful and considerate thought, and in keeping with our mission, through the generous donations of our patrons, have given in part toward: The Ulster Project, The Walnut Hills Soup Kitchen, The Over-The-Rhine Soup Kitchen, The Cincinnati Celtic Festival, St, Francis Seraph Soup Kitchen, The American Irish Theater Company, The Cincinnati Feis and The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Glee Club CD recordings.

Your opportunity: As you enjoy the camaraderie and steeped cultural heritage of this year’s Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Society banquet, consider yourself privileged and immersed in centurial tradition. As privileged as you are, as were the many family and friends before us who attended past banquets, we ask that you take count of your fortune and consider how you might give back to others who have an interest in Irish tradition and benevolence to the area’s hungry.

Join our ranks:Become a volunteer of The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Foundation today and begin supporting the needs of those in our community and help promote the Irish heritage you value. We welcome any means of support and invite you to participate in one of our upcoming events.

John Joyce Gilligan A Tribute

Destroyer Gunnery Officer John Joyce

Gilligan was standing ready on a naval ship

at the onset of the Normandy invasion.

When the fog lifted unexpectedly,

exposing the Allied ships and boats,

Gilligan’s Commander ordered him to

start firing at the entrenched German

batteries. A year later, in 1945, Lt. (JG)

Jack Gilligan received a Silver Star for

gallantry off Okinawa, when he risked his

life to hose down flames near the ammo

dump on his ship, the USS Rodman, that

had taken a kamikaze hit. His service in

the Atlantic and the Pacific is a seldom-

told chapter in the most illustrious career

of any modern-day member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of Cincinnati.

Now 90 years old, Gilligan has been a combat officer, educator and public

servant. After St. Xavier High School, the University of Notre Dame, World

War II service and graduate school at the University of Cincinnati, he taught

English literature at Xavier University from 1948 to 1953. During that stretch,

he served as President of the Friendly Sons in 1951. He was preceded as

President by his father, Harry J. Gilligan, in 1922; his uncle. A. C. Gilligan in

1916; his grandfather John J. Gilligan in 1908; and his grandfather’s brother,

A. J. Gilligan, in 1887. As the story goes, when Jack, at age 18, attended

his first Friendly Sons banquet, he wasn’t able to tie his bow tie properly, so

he enlisted his father, Harry, in the endeavor. Harry also had a problem, so

he said to Jack, “Would you mind lying down?” Harry was an undertaker.

Jack Gilligan

Page 15: Mosaic of St. Patrick Athenaeum of Ohio ~ Cincinnati

15

Jack Gilligan launched his political career in 1953, winning a seat on Cincinnati

City Council that he held until 1963. Your Historian first met Jack Gilligan

during the 1961 City Council campaign. I was something of a Democrat

advance man during summer break from Notre Dame Law School. When

Jack joined me at the bar of the old Quebec Gardens (not too strange a place

for two Irishmen to meet), I assured him that everything was set for his speech

to the assembled audience.

Gilligan was elected to Congress in the 1st Ohio District in 1964, but lost

his reelection bid two years later to Robert Taft, Jr. after the Republican

General Assembly gerrymandered the district. Undaunted, Gilligan defeated

incumbent Frank Lausche in the 1968 Democratic primary for U. S. Senator,

but narrowly lost in the general election to Republican William Saxbe, who

outspent Gilligan 5 to 1.

In 1970, however, Gilligan was elected Ohio’s 62nd Governor. He ran for

reelection in 1975, but was defeated by the immensely popular former

Governor Jim Rhodes in yet another exceedingly close election. One of the

factors in the race was Gilligan’s institution of an income tax, to make up for

what has been termed the State’s “deep fiscal hole.”

What followed was a sequence of further service to his country, community

and alma mater, including Administrator of the United States Agency for

International Development (USAID) 1977-79; Professor at the University of

Notre Dame and the first Director of the Kroc Institute for International Peace

Studies 1986-92; and, in the years 1999-2007, at ages 78 to 86, a member

of the Board of Education of the Cincinnati Public Schools.

Gilligan bestowed his fervor for political service on his daughter, Kathleen

Sebelius, whose election as Governor of Kansas made Jack and Kathleen the first

father-daughter gubernatorial duo in American history. Kathleen is currently

the Secretary of Health and Human Services in the Obama Administration.

In 2008, John J. Gilligan was named a Great Living Cincinnatian. How

right that was. Sláinte, Governor!

WHERE IS IRELAND?

o latitude or longitude Can bound the Emerald Isle. You’ll find it off in TimbuktuOr down along the Nile.

Wherever mothers stoop to smoothA baby’s touseled hairAnd croon an Irish lullabye—Ireland is there!

Wherever men are brave and trueAnd quick to take a standAnd proud to fight, if fight they must—There is Ireland!

Wherever lad and lassie meetA merry dance to share,(Oh, echoes of the Blarney Stone!)Ireland is there!

ave you ever been to Ireland

With its rolling hills so green?

Sure ‘n it’s the fairest land

That ever has been seen

And those green hills of Ireland

May be very far away

But they’re close to every Irish heart

No matter what the day.

The Soldier’s Song(Irish National Anthem)

The Star Spangled Banner(National Anthem of the United States of America)

Oh, say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,

What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,

O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?

And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.

O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Francis Scott Key

We’ll sing a song, a soldier’s song. With cheering, rousing chorus. As round our blazing fires we throng. The starry heavens o’er us;Impatient for the coming fight. And as we wait in the morning’s light,Here in the silence of the night. We’ll chant a soldier’s song.

ChorusSoldiers are we, whose lives are pledged to Ireland; Some have come from a land beyond the wave;Sworn to be free, no more our ancient sirelandShall shelter the despot or the slave.Tonight we man the Bearna Boaghail. In Erin’s cause, come woe or weal.‘Mid cannon’s roar and rifle’s peal,We’ll chant a soldier’s song.

Peadar O’Cearnaigh
