Liturgical Arts Guild We have now had a year of trying various decoration/art for each of the seasons on the liturgical calendar. We are planning for the coming year and invite your ideas/suggestions, anything you've seen at churches you may have visited around the country or world which moved you. We encourage creativity and would love to hear

Dear Parish Family, All around us more and more we see signs of separation and fracturing of community. Certainly, this is colored by a political season marked by silo-ing and polarization. It seems like Jim Hightower (1980s Texas politics) prediction that “the only thing in the middle of the road are yellow lines and dead armadillos” is becoming increasingly true. While I know that there is nothing special or sacred about the middle of the road, per se, and God certainly doesn’t call us to moderation, but to profligate abun-dant love; I also know that the separation and breaking apart of communities with in-creasing fear of and distance from the other is indeed the exact opposite to the work of the Holy Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit of God is about making space for others to come in, to dwell and to be loved. The Holy Spirit is about building bridges among people, and between people and God’s good crea-tion, in order to model the new community of the Kingdom. The Holy Spirit manifests itself in a diversity of gifts spread out among all people, given for the building up of the One Body in love. The judgment of the Holy Spirit speaks the truth in love rather than scapegoating, name-calling or demonizing others. God gifts each of us in unique ways to participate in God’s mission of healing and wholeness. Look to your own gifts, and to the giftedness present in the community of Christ Church. Where are you, where are we, being called to act? One opportunity we have this month to participate in the Holy Spirit’s community building work comes with Caravan’s The Bridge exhibition at NWC in Powell. Caravan is a Middle East arts organization that builds relationships between artists from the three Abrahamic faiths. The Bridge exhibition explores how art-making can build bridges among people for the making of peace. To prepare for The Bridge exhibition, we welcome the return of Dr. Marianne Kamp, from this spring’s Educational Trust Forum, to lead a book discussion group on Reza Aslan’s No god but God. The Bridge opens in Powell with a celebration at 6 pm on September 10th with Senator Al and Ann Simpson as well as Caravan artists as special guests. The Bridge programming in Park County includes a Wednesday evening film series hosted in Powell and Cody on bridging otherness with folks right here in the Big Horn Basin. Food 4 Kids Update

Happy New School Year! We’re off and run-ning for our third year of providing food for Cody’s

hungry kids. We hope to have the shelves stocked and the first bags delivered by September 15-16. The support from the schools and their administrators has been incredible. Our needs continue to grow, as the numbers of stu-dents served each year grows. Here’s how can you help:

*Sponsor a child for $250/year. *Visit the Food 4 Kids bulletin board in the parish hall, and purchase food items that will be put in weekly food bags. The food items change each month, so check back often. *Volunteer to help with double-bagging, stuffing bags, delivery to schools, fundrais-ing, or stocking shelves after the deliveries come in. *Praying for those who volunteer, and for those who receive.

A Deacon’s Journey

It is difficult for those of us who have enough to truly understand the situations that fami-lies living in poverty experience everyday – the decisions they have to make, and the fears and frustrations they feel. That is why we are inviting you to walk a mile in the shoes for those facing poverty by participating in a Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS), facilitated by the Park County Poverty Alleviation Coalition (PAC).

The Park County Poverty Alleviation Coalition is conducting its THIRD Poverty Simulation on September 18, and you are invited to take part to learn first-hand about the struggles of those who live in poverty in Cody. It will take place at Cody Missionary Al-liance Church from 1-4 pm. Contact Chris Galagan if you are interested in participating.

Blankets for Babies

The hum of sewing machines wafted from the halls of Christ Church this summer as blankets were created for Park County babies. There are still lots of blanket kits to be sewn, and ba-bies in need. Contact the church office or the Rev. Chris Galagan if you’d like to be a part of this ministry.

A Personal Spiritual Discipline of Thanksgiving United Thank Offering (UTO) is a ministry of The Episcopal Church

for the mission of the whole church. Through United Thank Offering, men, women, and children nurture the habit of giving daily thanks to God. These prayers of thanksgiving start when we recognize and name

our many daily blessings. Those who participate in UTO discover that thankfulness leads to generosity. United Thank Offering is entrusted to promote thank offerings, to receive the offerings, and to distribute the UTO monies to support mission and ministry throughout The Episcopal Church and in invited Provinces of the Anglican Communion in the developing world. Cody Community Choir The Cody Community Choir will be meeting at Christ Church on Tues-day nights, beginning September 6th. Choir practice will begin at 7:15 and end at 8:30.

Welcome Virginia Gee as Director of Children’s Education and Family Formation

Beginning September 1st, Nancy Fees will be taking a one-year sabbatical from her staff position at Christ Church and Virginia Gee will be stepping forward to fill in for one year. Nancy won’t be going far! We will still see her leading Children’s Chapel on the 3rd Sun-day of the month and leading special events for children and youth with her trademark creative touch. As Virginia takes on the role of Director of Children’s Education and Family Formation, she will still continue to volunteer her time in ministry as co-mentor for our J2A Group with Wallace Johnson. Virginia is a familiar face at Christ Church and friend to many. However, we might be surprised to learn how amazing are the qualifications she brings to this new leadership

role. Before moving to Cody and becoming a stay-home mom with four great daughters . . . Virginia re-ceived a Masters Degree in Education for K-12 Curriculum and Instruction as well as a Masters Degree in Physical Therapy; she taught two years at Boys Town, Nebraska and coached volleyball and basketball; worked as a PT at pain center in Utah and in Sheridan, WY. Today Virginia has blended her love of education, healing and wholeness and does integrative Physical Therapy with a focus on craniosacral therapy and somatic experiencing at the Healing Place. Her oldest daughter Regina has just left for college at the University of Pittsburgh; her next oldest Alannah is starting Wyoming Connections Academy this fall; her second youngest Amelia is in 8th grade at CMS and her youngest Allison is in 3rd grade at Livingston. When she was a child herself, Virginia attended a parochial Lutheran School. She was baptized as an infant, confirmed in 8th grade and participated in Fellowship of Christian Athletes through HS and College. She has found her spiritual home at Christ Church which resonated more accurately with her experience of God. At Christ Church, Virginia completed the four year EFM class and loved how it helped me to more clearly define why she has chosen to follow the Christian faith. Virginia says, “I have studied many different world religions and paths and find it inspiring that there are so many ways to find and worship God. It is because of my love of this church that I am interested in pursuing this position. Christ Church has become a place of refuge and strength for me and I hope to help instill that love and comfort in our youth; rather than “having” to go to church on Sundays, my hope is that our children and young adults feel a part of our community and that their spiritual development is a high priority in their lives.” Please help us welcome Virginia to her new position!

KID’S CORNER -Fall 2016 The next time you see her, please give VIRGINIA GEE A HUGE THANK YOU for her will-ingness to step in as Christian Education Director for this upcoming church school year. I need a short year off to work on projects! abundant! and then hopefully continue as your “church lady” after I’ve retired some other commitments. Virginia will do such a great job, and just think of all the new ideas that will be in the hopper -- it’s going to be a fabulous year with her guiding our youth programs! I hope you all will continue to be as wonderfully helpful as you always are, and that will make this a lovely year for Virginia, just like it always is for me. We’ll start this Sunday school year off with everyone in the big church on September 11th. We will have an instructed Eucharist during the 10AM service for everyone, followed by registration of all of our kids into their respective programs during the coffee hour. It seems repetitive to keep registering everyone year after year, but it’s a big help to know that all of our contact addresses and phone numbers are current. All that by way of saying, don’t dodge us! Register the kids! Everyone is welcome to help kick off the year with a float trip at Wyoming River trips. We’ll gather at Wyoming River Trips (by Walmart) at 12:30 on the 11th to do paperwork for the 1PM trip. The special group rate for the trip is $28.00 per person and the deadline for the river trip signup is Wednesday, September 7th! We’re continuing with Godly Play and J2A curricula, and all of those except YAC will begin on September 18th. The 18th will also be the ingathering for our United Thank Offer-ings and our Habitat for Humanity houses. First Sundays of each month will continue to be a “resource” time for our older kids: a time to explore different, creative forms of wor-ship. Third Sundays will still be Children’s Chapel in the Poker Church with me. Once again, our leaders will be:

*Back to school is a GREAT time for a well-child check for any age. If your child is in sports, the “Sports Physicals” that so many of our physicians provide is perfect. Just make sure vision and hearing are included.

*Limit non-school-related screen time. HA! Good luck with that. Seriously, the younger the child the less screen time. All children should have some outside play activity and keep bedtimes reasonable. *Sleep and School-aged Children (6-13 years) *Children aged six to 13 need 9-11 hours of sleep. At the same time, there is an increasing demand on their time from school (e.g., homework), sports and other extracurricular and social activities. In addition, school-aged children become more interested in TV, computers, the media and Internet as well as caffeine products – all of which can lead to difficulty fall-ing asleep, nightmares and disruptions to their sleep. In particular, watching TV close to bedtime has been associated with bedtime resistance, difficulty falling asleep, anxiety around sleep and sleeping.

In addition to baby shots, all entering kindergarteners need boosters for tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis (one shot), mumps measles-rubella (one shot), chickenpox and polio.

All entering 7th graders need tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis (one shot), consider getting a first meningococcal shot at this time as well. All entering college students need a shot for meningococcal disease. In addition, the vaccine for human papillomavirus that can eventually lead to cancer is available to both boys and girls and should be started at 12. And an annual flu shot. You know I was going to say that.

Breakfast. NO SKIPPING BREAKFAST! Ideally, breakfast should include a protein. If packing sack lunches, be sure to add something crunchy like an apple or carrot sticks. And believe it or not, kids do not need

dessert at every meal. It’s never too early to start talking about food wastage, so if the apple and carrot sticks are going to be tossed, talk with your child about what other reasonable foods to include. Talk about food wastage with hot lunches too.

Review crossing streets, bike helmets, “stranger danger” and driving safety. It’s always helpful

to remind driving teenagers that driving is a privilege, not a right. Carefully read your schools handbooks on bullying and violence. Your child may need to hear

repeatedly that reporting bullying and violence is the best practice and they will not be “tattling” but possibly saving misery or even a life.

A concussion a type traumatic brain injury that changes the way the brain normally works. A concussion is caused by a

bump, blow, or jolt to the head. Concussions can also occur from a fall or blow to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. Even what seems to be a mild bump to the head can be serious. If your child is extra sleepy, acting even a little “off” or complains of nausea or vomits, go to the emergency room right now. Like NOW.

Concussion ABCs: A-Assess the situation. B-Be alert for signs and symptoms. C-Contact a health care professional.

To parents of kids heading off to college for the first time: Your child will call you. Freaked out, sad, lonely, a total mess. Listen and confirm their distress. After you hang up, your college student WILL BE FINE. It’s you who will be the wreck. It gets better.
