6. Subject Verb Agreement

Singular nouns take singular verbs, whereas plural nouns take plural verbs.

a) A verb must agree in number with the noun or pronoun that is used as the

subject.

i) 2 singular / plural subjects joined by ‘and’ take a plural verb.

Example: Ali and Tom enjoy swimming.

Tigers and horses are mammals.

ii) The expressions given below are considered singular in number. Thus they take

singular verbs.

vi) Collective nouns are considered as a whole even though they show more than one

person, animal or thing. Thus they take singular verbs.

Example: A box of matches is on the table.

An army of soldiers is marching in the field.

viii) We use a singular verb when the subject is an uncountable noun.

Example: The water is dirty.

1. An article is used before noun. 用在名词之前。

‘a’ and ‘an’ are used before singular countable nouns.

Quantifiers are words used to tell us an amount or a number of something.

a) Quantifiers used for countable nouns only. 用于可数名词。

b) Personal pronouns are used to replace names of people, animals or things.

Subject pronouns are used in front of verbs, whereas object pronouns are used

Possessive adjectives are used before nouns, whereas possessive pronouns are

3. A Fire

Last Monday night, my brother, Jia Kit was studying in his room. It was late

at night and everyone was asleep.

Suddenly, he smelled smoke. He saw a fire and thick smoke coming from the

neighbour’s house. He ran to awake our parents. They immediately telephones the

5. My Birthday Party

Dear Dairy.

Today was my tenth birthday. My parents held a birthday party for me.

I waited for my relatives and friends to come. They sang a birthday song for me. I

made a wish. I hoped that everyone is in good health.

I received many gifts from my relatives and friends. I was indeed very

happy.

Last weekend, Anna went to the mall with her parents. She walked around

guard asked her what the matter was. She cried louder. The guard then took her to

the information counter. The receptionist made an announcement.

Soon, her parents came. They were very happy to see her and thanked the

guard and the receptionist. Then, they went home.
