CHURCH OF THE HOLY FAMILY VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA

WHO ARE THE MEN OF FAITH? WHAT DO THEY DO? We are ordinary Catholic men who seek a closer relationship with God. We meet twice each month to support and encourage one another on our spiritual journey. We preview the Mass readings for the following Sunday and discuss how to apply their lessons to our daily lives. We also read and discuss good spiritual books to help us in this. We join the universal Church in praying for our needs and the needs of our brothers and sisters in Christ. If this interests you, please contact Ron Batdorf at [email protected] or Bob Breault at [email protected] or (610) 360-6070.

WEEKLY WISDOM

Fall from Grace – Session FourAfter Adam and Eve fall into temptation and sin, they bring upon themselves the curses of breaking the covenant with God. But in His mercy, God announces His plan of salvation through the seed of the Woman: Jesus Christ. Where Adam failed to be a son, a husband, a priest, and a king, Jesus Christ reverses the curse of Adams’s disobedience through his obedience to the Father’s will.

Join us on Sunday mornings or Monday evenings for this exciting journey through the Bible! ALL ARE WELCOME! Registration forms are available in the Commons or register online on the parish website.

It is Not Too Late to Join Us!

The Women’s Book Circle meets at the church the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. (next meeting is October 17). Our book for September/October/November is The Faith Club by Ranya Idiby, Suzanne Oliver, and Priscilla Warner. We have decided to split the reading up to enable better discussion. For September, we read chapters 1-6. For October, please read chapters 7-12, (or chapters 1-12 to catch up). Please join us. All are welcome!

Women’s Scripture Circle meets the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at 7:00 p.m. We will be continuing our study of the Gospel of Luke, part two, using “Little Rock Scripture Study.” Don’t hesitate to join us any time.

For more information on the faith sharing circles, contact Marie Sexton at 718-4147.

FROM THE ADVOCATES CORNER:Down Syndrome Awareness

October is awareness month for several things, one of them being Down Syndrome. Down Syndrome is a genetic disorder where a person has 3 copies of chromosome 21 instead of 2. Sometimes this is called Trisomy 21. The cause of Down syndrome is unknown. It has nothing to do with race, nationality, socioeconomic status, religion or anything the mother or father did during pregnancy. It is estimated by the CDC in 2011 that the frequency of Down Syndrome is 1 in 700 live births, that is about 6,000 babies born every year with Down Syndrome. Our friends with Down Syndrome now live to be around 60 years old. In the past, they were lucky to survive to their 25th birthday. It is believed that this is due to the end of institutionalization. Persons with Down syndrome have physical and cognitive delays from birth. There is a wide range of abilities in this population. These are just a few facts, and sometimes these facts do not provide the entire picture. Our friends who experience Down Syndrome are actors, have full-time jobs, start their own businesses, and are successful contributing members of our church and our community. Since October is Down Syndrome Awareness month, let’s be inspired to learn more and celebrate our friends with Down Syndrome. For more information, there is a very active Down Syndrome Association here in Hampton Roads. The website is: http://dsahr.org/.

There is also an Annual Awareness Walk. See info below about this year’s walk. If you are out and about this weekend, check out their Awareness walk. It is usually great fun, and you are able to meet many exceptional people who experience Down Syndrome.Annual Step Up For Down Syndrome Awareness Walk Date: Sunday, October 13, 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Location: Mount Trashmore Park, 310 Edwin Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23462.Susie Stefonowich – [email protected]

VOTING ISSUES – EXISTING LAWS:When morally flawed laws already exist, prudential judgment is needed to determine how to do what is possible to restore justice – even if only partially or gradually – without ever abandoning a moral commitment to full protection for all human life from conception to natural death.

“CREATION CARE CORNER:” Can a Catholic be “Pro-Environment”

and not “Pro-Life?”

October is “Respect Life” month for the Diocese of Richmond and most other Catholic dioceses in the US. During this month, the Church calls us to pray, fast, and advocate for the culture of life. It is a month dedicated to promoting programs and policies against abortion, euthanasia, and the death penalty. In Laudato Si, Pope Francis urges us to care for and protect the unborn as an essential part of responsible stewardship of the environment. He states: “Since everything is interrelated, concern for the protection of nature is also incompatible with the justification of abortion. How can we genuinely teach the importance of concern for other vulnerable beings, however troublesome or inconvenient they may be, if we fail to protect a human embryo, even when its presence is uncomfortable and creates difficulties? ‘If personal and social sensitivity towards the acceptance of the new life is lost, then other forms of acceptance that are valuable for society also wither away.’” (LS#120)

The care for the environment and the respect of God’s creation entails respect for the unborn beyond the issue of abortion such as embryonic stem cell research and other forms of experimentation. Environmental harms are rarely, if ever, the primary aim of a polluting activity. Abortion, however, is by its nature intended to end a human life. It should be no wonder, then, why pro-life advocates may spend more of their energies on the matter of abortion, even if they should also rally for a safe, clean, and protected created order.

Any society that considers it acceptable to kill the unborn can never find within it the means or the desire to adequately protect creation. If murdering humans is acceptable, then destroying every other living thing is that much easier to justify. Abortion and experimentation on living embryos undermines the inalienable worth of a human being no matter his or her degree of development. Nature and morality are integrally interconnected.

The pope’s diagnosis of our ecological problem is that we have a spiritual sickness: we are caught in a consumerist lifestyle which rewards selfishness and greed — and the lifestyle has produced a “throw-away” culture which ignores, abandons, or marginalizes the vulnerable and inconvenient.

Simply put, one cannot be both pro-environment and pro-abortion. One cannot be concerned with climate change and not be concerned with protecting human life from conception to natural death.

During this month of October, we at Holy Family have the opportunity to participate in the Fall’s 40 Days for Life campaign at the Planned Parenthood facility on Newtown Road. Planned Parenthood is the largest provider of abortion in our area. The campaign calls us to join with other pro-life supporters by praying for the unborn, their mothers, and all those who are complicit in the sin of abortion. For more information, see www.40daysforlife.com/local-campaigns/virginia-beach/.

Respect Creation, Respect LifeFather and maker of all, you adorn all creation with splendor and

beauty, and fashion human lives in your image and likeness. Awaken in every heart reverence for the work of your hands, and renew among your people a readiness to nurture and sustain your precious gifts of Your creation and human life. We ask this through Christ, Our Lord. Amen. (adapted from the Book of Blessings).
