COLUMBIANA — After one yearin the Inter-Tri County League lowertier, the Columbiana Clippers are onthe move again.Columbiana and Southern Local

have jumped to the upper tier, whileMineral Ridge and Jackson-Miltondrop to the lower tier.“Teams down there all play tough,

but it’s good to be back in the upper tierplaying some familiar faces,”Columbiana senior lineman MikeBuzzard said.Columbiana and Southern Local will

join defending champion Crestview,East Palestine, Lisbon, United, SouthRange and Springfield Local in theITCL upper tier, which is kicking offits eighth season.“We know some of the guys here,”

Buzzard said. “All the teams give ustheir best shot, so we’ve got to be readyfor each team. You’ve got to preparefor the next team in the way.”Players and coaches from upper tier

teams like when Columbiana is in theleague.“I do because it’s more of what it’s

always been,” Crestview senior quar-terback Collin Gilbert said. “Crestview,Columbiana — they both compete forthe league championship. I like whenthey’re in the league.”Being in different tiers last year, the

Columbiana and Crestview rivalryopened the 2012 season on a Thursdaynight.“Even though for us it’s a rivalry, it

was kind of weird it wasn’t a leaguegame last year,” Crestview coach PaulCusick said. “I think it’s good for theleague and is good for our rivalry. I

kind of feel like that’s where theybelong and I hope they feel the sameway.”Crestview had to rally for a thrilling

37-33 win in one of the top games ofthe season.“That was a crazy game,” Gilbert

said. “The whole summer that was whatwe looked forward to, talking back andforth. “It’s just that backyard rival. It was a

great game. The first half, their offenseexploded and then the second half ourdefense kind of stepped it up.”The two rivals will have to wait until

Oct. 25 for another matchup.“It’s great having that extra competi-

tion,” Springfield senior lineman GabeCrowe said. “That great traditionbetween all of the teams in the leaguethis year just adds to the ITCL.”Others are looking forward to league

play with Columbiana.“That’s just more competition,”

Lisbon senior running back BrandonBarnes said. “I like playingColumbiana. They’re a good oppo-nent.”“Columbiana is always tough,” East

Palestine senior lineman Chris Raleysaid. “It’s always a game we want towin. We always prepare a little morefor Columbiana.”“It’s exciting,” United senior quar-

terback Garrett Beech said. “Not play-ing (Columbiana) last year, we’re notreally sure what they’re going to have. But we’ll get film on them and see whatthey’ve got.”Southern Local has had past experi-

ence with the other teams while in theold Tri-County League, which mergedwith the Inter-County League to formthe ITCL.“They’ve had some success the last

few years and have had some toughrunning backs,” Crowe said. “I knowpeople who have gone against them. They’ve said they’re a pretty toughteam. So I’m excited to have that com-petition.”Southern Local played East

Palestine, Lisbon and Crestview lastyear, while also meeting Columbiana inleague play.“It’s going to be different not playing

them to open the season,” Raley said.“We played them last year and that

was a hyped up game,” Gilbert said.“We played really well that game(which Crestview won 63-14).”Southern Local joins East Palestine

as the only league members with artifi-cial turf fields. Columbiana, EastPalestine, South Range and Springfieldwill play league games on Southern’snew field this season.“Last year they played us tough,”

Buzzard said. “It was a great game (thatColumbiana won 26-14). I’m justlooking forward to playing them in theupper tier now.”

COLUMBIANA—In the 2012 sea-son opener, the Crestview Rebelsedged Columbiana 36-33 in a tense,back-and-forth game that was notdecided until the final minutes. Little did the Crestview starters

know at the time, but they would notplay in another fourth quarter until theiropening round playoff game inNovember. In the weeks following the opener,

the Rebels took their already prolificoffense to a new level, piling up oneblowout win after another. By the timethe dust settled at the end of the season,Crestview had amassed an area-record628 points (52.3 per game) on theirway to the first undefeated regular sea-son in school history. The closest con-ference game was a 57-14 win overSouth Range. “It was really cool once we got into a

rhythm on offense last year,” seniorquarterback Collin Gilbert said.“Seeing the defense out of breath andscrambling to get set was a lot of fun.”“A lot of things came together that

allowed us to have the kind of offensiveseason we did,” coach Paul Cusicksaid. “Going into the season we thoughtwe would be decent and make some bigplays but we didn’t expect anythinglike what ended up happening.”

The Rebels scored at least 57 straightpoints in eight straight games on theway to a school-best 11-1 record. As they prepared for 2012, the

Rebels returned two key running backs

in Nick Blower and Matt Hardenbrook, but needed to break in a new quarter-back (Collin Gilbert) as well as replace

Our strength should be ouroverall defensive team speed and athlet-ic abiliy, but we will be young. We needto replace three starters on the defensiveline, three at the linebacker position, and we will have two new starters in thesecondary. the vast majority of an offensive linethat helped pave the way to a regionalfinal berth in 2011. Cusick felt that theteam’s success would hinge on howquickly that new line would gel. “The line was the biggest key to the

whole season,” Cusick said. “We had alot of young guys on the offensive line, but they didn’t take long to mature anddid a great job of grasping our audiblesystem very quickly. Getting our lineset was what really allowed us to get ona roll.”Gilbert also proved to be a worthy

signal-caller, running and passing forover 1,000 yards and accounting for 31touchdowns.“I had a good season, but there’s no

way we would have been able to movethe ball if the line didn’t step up likethey did,” he said. “You can have thebest running backs in the league but itdoesn’t mean anything if you don’thave good blocking.”2012 represented the culmination of

an offensive philosophy that Cusickand his staff have spent the last severalyears ingraining into the program. TheRebels operate a run-based spreadoffense which features a quick tempo

and plenty of audibles. They do nothuddle often, instead hurrying to thescrimmage line to try and run anotherplay before the defense can get set. Theidea being to wear down the other teamand take them out of their comfortzone, creating big-play opportunities.“We run the same type of offense all

the way down to the middle schoollevel,” Cusick said.“It’s very important for us to instill

the basics of the system into the kids ata young age so that by the time theyreach high school that stuff is secondnature to them and we can then moveforward and make things more sophisti-

cated.”“Picking up the offense last year was

really no trouble for me because I’vebasically been running it since I startedplaying football,” Gilbert said. “Thewhole team starts off the year prettyfamiliar with everything, which makesit a lot of fun.”However, all of last year’s success

came with a slight trade-off. TheRebels were often so far ahead of theiropponents by halftime, that the startersspent most of the second half restingcomfortably on the bench, their workfor the night finished. While that’s aproblem every team would gladly take, some of Crestview’s players admittedfeeling restless as the season went on.“Sure, I would have loved to play

more last year,” said senior JoshMcDade, who is moving from tackle totight end this season. “Second halveswere really boring at times, but on the

other hand I think it really helped ourprogram out for this year because a lotof younger players got experience.”The Rebels averaged 9.1 yards per

rush on the season along with 463 totalyards per game. This season, the Rebels face the

opposite problem of last year. Gilbertand the entire offensive line return, butthe Rebels must find a way to replaceBlower and Hardenbrook as well asreceiver Kris Simpson and tight endDimitri Gregory, all of whom account-ed for over 3,000 yards of offense and47 touchdowns. “We have a lot of yards to replace

this year, but having an experiencedquarterback and our entire line back ishuge and hopefully will help the rest ofthe offense settle in,” Cusick said. “Wehave a lot of players that have beenhungry for their opportunity and arenow ready to take advantage.”

East Palestine coach returns homeBY CHRIS RAMBO

Staff Writer

EAST PALESTINE—Unlike someassistant coaches, Tony Foster neverfelt the urge to one day run his ownprogram. However, an opening at hisalma mater proved too much to resist.Foster, a 1994 graduate of East

Palestine High School, succeeded GareMattes as the Bulldogs’ next footballcoach in February. For the past threeyears he coached alongside DanYeagley as a varsity assistant at SouthRange, where he also ran the freshmanteam. It was a comfortable situation. The

program was stable. Foster enjoyed theplayers, and he also taught social stud-ies at the school—a position he stillholds. Had any other coaching vacan-cies popped up, he he would have beencontent to remain at South Range forthe foreseeable future.“East Palestine was the only head

coaching position I would have consid-ered,” Foster said. “I loved coaching atSouth Range with Dan Yeagley and theentire staff there. It was a terrific job.But I thought the chance to come backhome and turn the program aroundseemed pretty special.”East Palestine has had one winning

season in the last 10 years and had only28 players on its varsity roster last sea-son. Foster hopes to one day turn theBulldogs into a consistent winner, buttook the job realizing he was beginningat square one. While at South Range, one of his

jobs was to build program participa-tion, something he made his first prior-ity over the winter. In order to drum upinterest, Foster showed up at EastPalestine during the lunch hour andwent table-to-table, talking with stu-dents and telling them what he hadplanned for the football team. “Right away, what I wanted to do

was just get kids into the weight room

and get them started on a lifting pro-gram,” Foster said. “When I got herewe had some good athletes in othersports who weren’t going out for the

football team. I’m hoping that ourweight program can show them thebenefits lifting can have for their sportand convince them to stay with the

football team.”So far, Foster’s efforts to beef up the

numbers have proven successful. TheBulldogs currently have 54 players onthe roster, nearly double their totalfrom 2012. Upon taking the job, Fostersaid his goal was to get to 50 players, anumber he believes a team needs to beconsistently good. “A lot of the increase can be credited

to a big freshman class,” Foster said.“Overall I think we set a good founda-tion over the winter in the weightroom.”Once fall practice rolled around,

Foster again tried to keep his focus onsmall incremental steps. He has spentmuch of the time making sure the teambecomes more solid in blocking andtacking, which Foster believes willinstantly make the Bulldogs more com-petitive. A new spread offense is alsobeing installed, which Foster hopeswill give the team’s athletes a betterchance to use their skill and make bigplays. “Above everything else, the biggest

thing I’m trying to emphasize is to getour players to play through the whistleon every snap,” Foster said.“Everything else will eventually fallinto place, but if we consistently playfast and through the whistle we have achance to compete.”Still, Foster knows that the program

will not be transformed overnight.Progress has been slow at times duringpractice, and success may not be imme-diately reflected in the team’s overallrecord. The goal for this season is toshow gradual improvement.“We’re slowly getting better. I think

we are on the right track,” Foster said.“East Palestine has a lot of communitypride in their football team. I see it liv-ing here and I remember it when Iplayed here. This year is hopefully thefirst step to restoring that kind ofexcitement.”

2013 OutlookIf the Blue Devils want to turn the

corner, they need to sustain some suc-cess. They won two game last season, giving them four wins over the last 57games.“We must stay healthy,” Tsilimos

said. “We’re hoping to change the cul-ture of losing the last six years. We mustbe more physical on defense and notgive up as many points this year.”The Blue Devils will open the season

against Leetonia and Mineral Ridge athome, where they have lost 13 of theirlast 14 games. Then they will visitWellsville, one of the top teams in thelower tier.

“For us, we need early success,”Tsilimos said. “You can’t win the uppertier in the first three weeks, but you canlose it. Those games may not count inthe standings, but you need some suc-cess early to carry over going intoleague play.”There are 17 returning lettermen, giv-

ing the Blue Devils somewhere to startbuilding.“On offense, we want to get better at

throwing the ball,” Tsilimos said.“Defensively, we have to be able to geta stop when we need it. We’ve got tokeep games close.”The Blue Devils gave up an average

of 36.7 points in the seven ITCL gameslast season.“Crestview is the champ until someone

beats them,” Tsilimos said. “Springfieldand United will challenge Crestview.South Range is always good.”

Springer is hoping another year of expe-rience for his skill players yields betterresults.“Improved execution will be the key

for us this year,” Springer said. “Lastyear, I think our youth caused us to beovermatched a lot of the time, but ourplayers have now become more familiarwith our system and we also spent thewinter getting stronger. Our improvedstrength up front should be a big differ-ence this year.”

Defensive outlookThe Trojans gave up 42 points or

Springer said. “Our physicality shouldbe much improved last year. We havealso done a much better job so far inpractice of playing solid assignment-based football. Last year we were out ofposition a lot, which led to a lot ofmissed tackles. Overall we should be alot more solid this year.”

in the system for two years or more andwe had our best winter in the weightroom since I’ve been here.” Springersaid. “I was very encouraged by ourscrimmage against Malvern. hey are astrong program, but we competed phys-ically with them. Last year we would’vebeen pushed off the field.”The Trojans were outscored by near-

ly 40 points in seven ITCL lower tiergames last season.“It should be a competitive year in the

league,” Springer said. “WesternReserve, Wellsville, and McDonald areall loaded. We are still trying to estab-lish our identity. I’m not sure how manywins we’ll have, but I know we willcome to compete every Friday.”

2013 OutlookWhat can the Crestview do after last

season’s record-breaking season whenthe Rebels beat six teams with winingrecords? Just watch. The Rebels return 25 letterwinners,

who have been waiting for their chance, and a dominating offensive line that willbe a solid building block to another win-ning season.Crestview has won 28 of its last 29

regular-season games, 33 of its last 34league games and have totaled 51 winsover the last five seasons. The Rebels averaged 61.7 points a

game in the ITCL upper tier last season,

when the closest game was a 57-14decision against South Range. It may be a little closer this season as

United, Springfield and South Rangeare hoping to challenge the defendingleague champions.“The Inter-Tri County League is a

great showcase for small-school foot-ball in our area,” Cusick said. “From topto bottom, the ITCL looks to be tremen-dously competitive. There will be noeasy wins in this league.“South Range is back where they

belong. Columbiana and United will beathletic and physical with great skillplayers. They will be extremely com-petitive. Springfield had a great run lastseason and will be very confident andwill return a great group of of youngplayers. “Lisbon will have some good young

athletes and may be the most improvedteam in the league. East Palestine willbe much improved and returns key play-ers. Southern has historically been avery scrappy team and has had somekey wins over the last few years. Thetop three teams in our tier are SouthRange, Springfield and United.”

2013 OutlookColumbiana has gone 16 straight sea-

sons without a losing record and hopesthis year’s team develops quickly andstays healthy in the Clippers’ return tothe ITCL upper tier.“After one year in the lower tier, we

return to the ITCL upper tier, which atleast on paper is loaded,” Spaite said.“Springfield, United, South Range andLisbon all return very veteran teams.“Southern Local moves into the upper

tier and has established themselves as avery tough, physical opponent. East

Palestine will have a new coach andnew attititude. What else can we sayabout Crestview, who has establishedthemselves as one of the top 10 teams inthe state in their division.”The Clippers return four starters on

each side of the ball — most of them onthe line.“Our non-league schedule is chal-

lenging,” Spaite said. “We open with anew and unknown opponent inBridgeport (which defeated SouthernLocal in the 2010 state playoffs). Weektwo is traditional rival Leetonia and wefinish non-league play with playoffopponent Steubenville CatholicCentral.”

The Clippers play four of their firstfive games away from FirestoneStadium, where they have won 14 oftheir last 18 regular-season games.

improved the Eagles are defensivelyand how they fare against teams withwinning records. Last season, all sixwins came against teams with losingrecords and all four losses were against

teams with winning records. TheEagles haven’t beaten a team with awinning record the past two seasons.“The league will be very competitive

with a lot of good teams,” Ward said.“Crestview is always good andSpringfield is going to be good. SouthRange is always very competitive. There are no easy ones. It will be a test.”

WELLSVILLE — When RichWright was hired as the new Wellsvillefootball coach in January, some peopletold him to lower his expectations. Some said the kids from that communi-ty would be different from those hecoached for 14 seasons at Beaver Local. That they wouldn’t have a great atti-tude, wouldn’t work as hard and that hewas in for a real shock.Wright says he found nothing could

be further from the truth.“I would say the biggest surprise was

that some people said the Wellsvillekids would be different, be lazy,” hesaid. “I haven’t seen that at all. The kidsare awesome. They’ve worked so hard. They’re respectful. They’ve been pre-pared for success and have a great dealof pride. They want to do well and I’vebeen impressed with them since dayone.”As soon as Wright was hired, he

began the process of getting to know hisplayers better. He was a regular at theTigers’ basketball games and wrestlingmatches this past winter and could befound watching the track and baseballteams in the spring.Wright said developing a relationship

with his new team was his first priority.“I’ve tried to talk with them and find

out about them,” he said. “That’s beenone of the fun parts. These kids have

charisma. It’s pretty cool that everyonelives so close together. Some of themwalk to practice. Kids are kids and Ithink they’ve accepted me just fine.”The process of getting acclimated

with his players hasn’t been as easy as ithas in the past for Wright. At Beaver Local, Wright knew

almost every family and saw his playerson a daily basis at school. Now, he hasto put in extra time to make sure he

stays up on what is happening with histeam.“The hardest part is not seeing them

in school,” he said. “When you’re in theschool, you know everything that’sgoing on in the classroom. You knowany time they have to visit the principalor when they’re absent or come in late. You can talk to them face to face andsee what’s going on.”Without being able to see them at

school, Wright has leaned on the princi-pal, athletic director and teachers tokeep him informed about his players. But Wright isn’t the only one trying

to soak up new information. His team isalso adjusting to a new coach and a newsystem.“The hard part is that I’ve got an

experienced football team, but theyhave to learn everything from the begin-ning,” he said. “Every drill, every playhas to be taught from the ground up. It’sa new way of doing things for them and

change is always hard.”Another challenge for Wright has

been to increase the number of studentsplaying football. Last season, the Tigersstruggled with participation levels andsuited up just 24 players for most oftheir games.Wright said the school’s size has

made increasing their numbers difficult.“It’s been a couple steps forward at

times, a couple steps back,” he said.“We only have 90-plus boys in theschool. I’ve heard if you get 12 percentof your boys playing, that’s good. Well,12 percent for us would hardly be half ateam. “We’ll definitely have enough to play

on Friday and Saturday and that willhelp. My main concern is that whatevernumber we start with, that’s what weneed to finish with.”Expectations are high in Wellsville

with a talented senior class looking toleave its mark. Wright said he under-stands that only success will bringeveryone on board with his plan.“There’s still people in the communi-

ty that don’t know me,” he said. “I’vegot to prove something to them. This isa very proud community. Everyone hasbeen very nice, very cordial and sup-portive, but I’ve got to do some positivethings on and off the field for everyoneto buy in.”Wright signed a three-year contract

when he took the job. He said thatshows the level of commitment on bothsides to see his plan through to the end.“If Wellsville got every athlete in

town to play football, they’d probablykick us out of the league,” he said.“There are athletes all over this town. It’s very talent rich for such a smalltown. I’ve got kids and you never knowwhat the future may bring, but as longas Wellsville wants me, this could be agood place for me. Who knows, maybeI’ll be here for the next 20 years.”

Scary scene at Southern LocalBY CHRIS RAMBO

Staff Writer

SALINEVILLE—On Oct. 7, 2011,Southern Local hosted Western Reservein one of the most-anticipated footballgames in recent school history. It was homecoming and both teams

were undefeated. The winner wouldlikely be the Inter-Tri County LeagueLower Tier champion.“A bunch of things combined to make

that night a really big event,” Southernathletic director Jess Krulik said. “I’venever seen so many cars for a footballgame since I’ve been at the school.”The parking lots at Southern Local

High School quickly overflowed, withmany of the excess vehicles pulling intoa private field across the street. Amongthose parked there was Western ReserveHigh School graduate and YoungstownState freshman Tori Korda.During the second half, with Western

Reserve comfortably ahead, Korda andtwo of her friends decided to leave. After crossing Route 39, they beganwalking parallel to the road, about threefeet into the grass. As the group contin-ued to their parking spot, a 2011 FordF-150 came up behind them andswerved to the right, clipping one ofKorda’s friends with the passenger sidemirror—knocking it off in theprocess—and striking Korda below herleft shoulder.“We were just walking down the side

of the road and the next thing I remem-ber there were people standing over me,talking to me, trying to calm me down,”Korda said.

The driver did not stop. In fact, thosein the vicinity told Korda that the truckactually increased its speed as it droveaway.“I’m not sure if the driver knew they

had hit somebody, but everybodyaround me said it sure looked like theysped away intentionally,” Korda said.Korda was taken by ambulance to St.

Elizabeth Hospital in Boardman with abroken bone between her shoulder andelbow. She was released the followingday and her left arm was in a cast for alittle more than two months. A bulletin was soon put out asking

people to be on the lookout for a lightgray or white 2011 Ford F-150 missinga passenger side window. No new infor-mation ever surfaced and the case wasclosed after a year.

“They were able to identify the vehi-cle through pieces of the mirror, andafter that I thought there was a chance tofind somebody,” Korda said. “But, atthe same time, I’m not really surprisednobody was caught once the driver spedaway. My friend’s parents tried to run itdown, but they weren’t able to get agood view.”According to Krulik, school officials

agreed immediately to discourage anyfurther parking in the field.“Members of our booster club help

park cars, and after the accident wemade sure the area across the street wasmonitored and that cars were directedelsewhere,” Krulik said. “Everybodyhas been pretty accepting of that and wehaven’t had any real problems since.”Members of the Southern community

hope that a more permanent solution hasnow arrived. As part of an overall facility upgrade,

parking around the football field hasbeen expanded by about 100 spaces forthe upcoming season. Two new parkingareas have been added, one by theschool’s administrative offices andanother by the concession stand. Tohandle any potential overflow, a newaccess road has been created leading tothe practice football field in back of thestadium.Superintendent John Wilson, who

was not with Southern at the time, acknowledged the accident came upduring discussions about stadiumupgrades, but did not say it was theoverriding reason for more parking.“There were a number of factors that

went into the need to improve our facil-ity, and the accident was certainly a partof it,” Wilson said. “We knew we need-ed to get more parking not just for foot-ball but for all of our other events aswell.”According to Krulik, the issue predat-

ed Korda’s accident and affected theschool in other ways besides safety.“Parking has been a problem for

awhile,” Krulik said. “Besides the issueof people having to park in a privatefield, the lack of space was really hurt-ing our attendance compared to theother ITCL schools. “We now think we have enough

space to accommodate everybody andmore than enough overflow room by thepractice field so that nobody shouldhave to park across the street.”

“I’m not sure if thedriver knew they hadhit somebody, but

everybody around mesaid it sure lookedlike they sped away

intentionally.”TORI KORDA,

SALINEVILLE — Each time amember of this year’s senior class stepsonto the new artificial turf field atSouthern Local, they still can’t believeit’s happened. What was once a dream, has now become reality. As freshmen, they were introduced

to a new coach in Mike Skrinjar.Together they set out to achieve a listof goals they believed would take thefootball program to the next level.Included in that list was an upgrade tothe school’s football stadium and sur-rounding facilities.A new synthetic turf field has now

been installed along with improve-ments to both the visitor and homebleachers, a new field house and addi-tional parking.“It still doesn’t even seem real,”

Southern Local senior lineman CalebGotschall said. “We always talkedabout how cool it would be to have this, but I never thought it would happenwhile I was still here.”Skrinjar — who has led the Indians

to a 23-8 record during the past threeseasons — said the new upgrades havebeen something he has envisioned sincehe took over the program.“Four years ago, I sat down with this

group of players when they were justfreshmen and talked about buildingwhat I called an ‘Indian Empire,’” hesaid. “We dreamed about having a field

like this. It took a lot of people to seethis thing through including the players.

2013 OutlookThe Raiders, who feature 15 seniors,

return a lot of players who saw actionlast season due to injuries.“Throughout the 2012 season, we

played a lot of different players,”Yeagley said. “Many of our players had

a chance to start at least one game dur-ing the season because of injuries andtrying to find the right combination. “Even though we played a lot of dif-

ferent of players, the Raiders still haveto mature quickly because of a verytough non-league schedule and a verytough league. The Raiders have workedvery hard in the offseason and duringconditioning. The seniors have alsoshown great leadership. The Raiders, however, must still learn from the pre-vious teams and play together.”South Range suffered its only loss in

the Inter-Tri County League upper tierto Crestview last season and will try tocatch the Rebels again this year.“The league is loaded,” Yeagley said.

“Anything can happen in the league.“Crestview being Crestview. United

is loaded and has everybody back andSpringfield has everybody back. It isgoing to be tough, really tough. We’vegot to stay healthy.”

2013 OutlookComing off their second losing season

in 17 years, the Tigers expect to turnthings around in a hurry.“Our players are excited and enthusias-

tic about the upcoming season,” Guerrierosaid. “With a number of returning on bothsides of the ball, we are looking to buildoff their experiences from last season.”The Tigers return 17 lettermen and all

of their skilled players will be back in thestarting lineup.“We want to compete for the ITCL title

and return to the playoffs,” Guerriero said.Springfield hopes to close the gap on

five-time defending league championCrestview.“Crestview has been dominate for so

many years, you have to put them on top,”Guerriero said. “Columbiana moving upwill be a good rivalry game for us. Theleague has been so competitive, you can’ttake any week off.”

this, the expectations rise and so doesthe pressure. “But, if we do what we need to do,

we’ll be hosting a playoff game. Onpaper, we can do it, but we all knowthe game isn’t played on paper. Going10-0 is our number one goal. It’s timeto get to work.”Wellsville will be among the teams

in the running for the ITCL lower tier.“The lower tier is as competitive as

you can get,” Wright said. “Most ofthe teams have a lot of seniors comingback. I think the league is in an upyear. But, this league is fair. We alldeal with small numbers. I’m excitedto be a part of this league and I trulybelieve four teams from the lower tierwill make the playoffs — two inDivision VI and two in Division VII.”The key to the Tigers’ season will

be at the end of the regular seasonwhen they play Mineral Ridge,McDonald and Western Reserve.

These guys believed in each other andthey were able to get people excitedabout Southern Local football again.”The money for the project — costing

slightly more than $1 million— camefrom moving inside mills (guaranteedmoney from the state) from the currentexpense fund to the permanentimprovement fund. The millage movewas approved at a March 6 board meet-ing and resulted in an unvoted taxincrease. “You are never going to please

everybody,” Southern LocalSuperintendent John Wilson said.“Some folks don’t believe that we needthe stadium improvements or don’t likehow the money was raised, but a lot ofpeople are also pretty excited about it.”There’s no doubt the players are

excited about it.According to Southern Local senior

quarterback Jared Shilot, the new field

is a source of pride for the team.“The whole things is just breathtak-

ing,” he said. “It’s an honor to be a partof the senior class that opens this placeup. “We always said we’d have a turf

field one day, but we didn’t think itwould be in our generation. For us, it’sa symbol of all the hard work the for-mer and current players have put in.”Southern Local senior wide receiver

M.J. Williams said being able to use theupdated facilities has humbled him andmade him appreciate all the hard workthat went into making it happen.“Coming out here everyday, it’s

mind-blowing,” he said. “This group ofseniors is an amazing bunch. “We’ve treated every practice like it

was a game since we were freshmen. We’ve talked about having somethinglike this to play on since then. We justnever thought it would really happen.”
