Office News
Happy New Year! On behalf of all Morning Glory staff, we would like to
welcome everyone back to 2015! We are also welcoming back winter for
2015. We hope everyone enjoys the bone chilling temperatures, the
snow, the shovelling, the winter activities and curling up with a comfort-
able fleece blanket. And how could you not enjoy the performance of
our World Champion Canadian Junior Hockey Team.
We wish to remind students and parents at Morning Glory that children
learn better when they receive regular intervals of exercise and fresh
air. We send the children out for either a full or a shortened recess in
everything but the most inclement weather (usually temperatures that
drop below -20 degrees Celsius). We keep a close eye on all weather con-
ditions, including wind chill before making our decisions. When condi-
tions necessitate, we may decide that students remain inside for recess.
We are fortunate to have all yard supervisors with access to hand held
radios which provides immediate feedback.
Conditions may vary from school to school, so it’s important that we con-
tinue to make decisions based on conditions at our school. We ask that children are appropriately dressed for the weather: warm hat, gloves,
scarf, coat, pants and boots at this time of year. We are aware that
this winter has seen changing temperatures and conditions; however, it
is best to be prepared for the worst. Generally, if students are well
enough to attend school, then they will be expected to go outside for
recess.
Also, we would like to remind you that Term 1 ends on Monday, February 2rd, 2015, and Report Cards will go home on Wednesday February 18th, 2015. Term 2 effectively begins on Tuesday Febru-ary 3rd, 2013. Please feel free to contact the office or your child’s teacher if you have any questions about the reporting process for this school year.
Reminder - Locked School Doors Beginning February 3 last year, all school doors, including the
front doors have been locked 15 minutes after the morning
entry bell. The doors remain locked for the rest of the
day. Anyone arriving at the school after that time must buzz
in and sign in at the main office.
Please Be Patient at the Door As our enrollment decreases, so too does our staffing. We now have 1 1/2
administrative assistants in the front office and on many occasions there
is only one assistant. Mrs. Andrews and Mrs. Underwood do their best to
answer the door promptly, but other duties such as answering the phone,
assisting students, and taking classroom calls means we all may need to be
a little patient. Our phone system takes incoming phone calls, classroom
phone calls and entry door calls, but only allows one conversation at a time.
Projected Enrollment
Are you moving before next September?
Is there someone in your neighbourhood with first-time
Kindergarten age children?
If so, please let us know as soon as possible.
We are currently projecting our student enrolment for September 2015
These numbers help us hire sufficient staff and support personnel. It is
important that we know as soon as possible whether you may be leaving the
Morning Glory Community before September. If there is someone with a 4
-year-old in your neighbourhood who has not yet started school, let them
know that registration begins January 16th. If you know of someone mov-
ing into your neighbourhood with school-aged children, we would like to
know as well. Thanks for your assistance in preparing for the next school
year.
Let it Snow
With the winter season upon us, people of all ages are looking
forward to the joys of snow. Most children rank snowballing
high on the list of fun winter activities. Unfortunately, when
we have hundreds of students tramping through a small area of
snow, that snow quickly becomes icy and SAFETY becomes a ma-
jor concern. We have instructed all of our students that for SAFETY
REASONS SNOWBALLING IS FORBIDDEN.
There may be times where a teacher may supervise a snow activity such as
snow/ice sculpture building if conditions are appropriate; however, with the
exception of these activities, and the making of snowmen or snow forts,
SNOW MUST STAY OUT OF HANDS AND ON THE GROUND at all
times.
Students are aware of the following consequences: 1st incident: yard privileges temporarily removed
2nd incident: warning letter or phone call goes home; yard
privileges removed
3rd incident: phone call home/meeting with parent(s); yard
privileges removed; suspension. (see below).
Injury to a student could result in suspension even for a first incident. We
appreciate your support in all matters relating to your child(ren)’s safety.
Please take time with your child to review this policy.
Weather Watch
All students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 are
expected to go out for every recess unless the princi-
pal or vice-principal decides that weather conditions
are so poor that it would be detrimental for them to
be outdoors. Students are to come to school ready
for winter and prepared to be outdoors up to 40 min-
utes after lunch. We always monitor the weather and, in extreme condi-
tions e.g. wind chill; we keep the students indoors or shorten the recess
breaks.
We often receive requests from parents asking us to keep their chil-
dren indoors during recess times because they are not feeling well. Unfor-
tunately, we do not have the staff or facilities to supervise students who
are sick or still recovering from an illness. Students with heavy colds,
etc., which are serious enough to prevent them from participating in physi-
cal education, recesses or other outdoor activities, should remain at home
until their condition improves. This will likely benefit the students con-
cerned and prevent the spread of this illness to others.
Please make sure that your children are dressed properly for our invigo-
rating winter days. It is advisable for students to bring extra pants and
socks. A change is often necessary due to the wet and cold weather of the
winter months. To avoid adding to our clothing collection in the Lost and
Found, please be sure to label all articles of clothing. Boots, hats, mitts/
gloves, scarves, and snow pants for the younger children will help make
recess an enjoyable time.
Exceptions are made on an individual basis for children who may need
to remain indoors for an ex-
tended period of time because of
a physical condition or recovery
from a serious illness or acci-
dent. In such cases, a letter
from the doctor is required.

Respectful Recesses
A Behavioural Reminder
Please discuss with your child at home as we
would very much like for all our students to
meet the expectations and experience an en-
joyable recess experience. Not only discuss
the snow throwing policy with your
child, but talk about respecting
the snow sculptures and forts
made by other students. Suggest
that it is just as easy to help
other students build forts as it is
to stomp on them.
MGPS SNOW FORT MOTTO YOU DIDN’T MAKE IT— YOU
DON’T BREAK IT!
Lost and Found Reminder
Our lost and found continues to be an
active location during cold wintery
weather. We encourage you to hound
your children to check for their missing
belongings and make opportunity your-
self to check the box when you are in
the school. Labels work wonders and are
certainly worth the time to ensure your
child’s belongings find their way home.
Morning Glory Public School Dances
The student and school council along with the school admini-
stration continue to support MGPS student dances. Our
December dance raised just over $600 which is on average
somewhat less than previous years. The funds from these events are used to
support student activities within the community.
As a MGPS staff, we continue to volunteer and support many extra curricu-
lar events. That said, with a decreasing student population and fewer finan-
cial resources, these activities remain even more challenging to maintain.
Your support is most appreciated.
Community members may also want to know that the Province and School
board do not financially support the coaching of extra-curricular activities
and electives programming offered in schools. The school council, student
fundraising and school, through volunteer hours, support these actives each
year with costs in excess of $4000.

Kindergarten Registration to Commence January 16, 2015
Kindergarten registration will commence on January 16, 2015 for the
2015-16 school year. Registration forms are available on YRDSB’s web-
site: www.yrdsb.edu.on.ca. Children who turn four or five years old during
2015, live within the school boundary and whose parents are public school
tax supporters will be eligible to register for kindergarten. A kindergar-
ten information session for parents is being planned for this spring. For
more information please visit the YRDSB website or contact your local
school.
French Immersion Information
Sessions and Registrations
Information sessions for the French Immersion (FI) program will take
place at Keswick Public School on January 15, 2015 at 7 p.m. FI registra-
tion will begin January 16, 2015. In order to streamline the registration
process, parents or guardians of Senior Kindergarten students entering
Grade 1 in 2015, and wishing to enroll in the FI Program, can visit or call
the school office and request an Office Index Card - short version. The
Office Index Card must be signed by the principal of the home school.
Parents or guardians then take this form, along with one piece of identifi-
cation showing their address to [school name] to register between Janu-
ary 16 and February 13, 2015. This eliminates the need to provide dupli-
cate enrollment information or to pre-register.
YRDSB’s FI Accommodation Plan provides long-term consistency and equity of ac-
cess to all students in York Region and will enable YRDSB to continue to offer the FI
program to all who wish to enrol. The FI program will be offered in Dual Track or
Single Track settings, in a variety of configurations. In order to meet community
needs and optimize available space in our schools, a community's Grade 1-8 FI pro-
gram may be provided over more than one school during the course of a student's FI
education. This will allow flexibility in addressing community needs and the opportu-
nity to use existing space in schools. More information is available on the Board’s
website: www.yrdsb.ca.

Morning Glory’s Intramural Floor Hockey Tournament
This year we had over 120 participants show up on a regular basis to participate
in the MGPS floor hockey intramural program. The activity was a great success!
Many students took on a leadership role and helped Mr. Taylor by scoring, refe-
reeing, advertising, making announcements and setting up equipment. Many more
students participated and thoroughly enjoyed the competition.

opportunity to observe and discuss each others’ math lessons as
well as those of colleagues in other schools.
During monthly staff meetings at MGPS, we
continue to focus our learning on Effective
Math Instruction. We have deepened our
understanding of games as a part of a
balanced math program.
