Beautiful statues inspire and touch the lives of those who gaze upon

them. The statues of St Gabriel the Archangel installed this fall at each of our campuses serve as a symbol of our Faith Community and connection between our campuses. Our statues stand 58” tall and are produced in industrial grade fiberglass with a stone finish that can withstand extreme weather. To make a donation toward our statues send your contribution, designated Statue Fund, to the parish office or drop it in the offertory basket. We thank you for your support of this enduring symbol.

THANK YOU Bob Kilian and family wish to thank Fr. Liekhus, staff and all who helped with the mass and luncheon. We also appreciate the overwhelming support and condolences for our dear wife and mother Dorothy Kilian.

Parish News

Dear Parishioners, You may recall that the parish has been looking into the possibility of being a host site for Loaves & Fishes. Loaves & Fishes, if you aren’t familiar with them, is an organization whose mission is to feed the hungry. They provide a free supper to anyone who wishes to come, as often as they wish to come. They hire a coordinator who is onsite every day that a meal is offered, who is in charge of making sure the meal is provided, that volunteers are lined up, and that the facility is left the way they found it. From what I can tell so far, it would be an excellent fit for St. Gabriel’s. Cathy Maes feels the same way. She is the director of Loaves & Fishes, and came to visit in order to look at the social hall of St. Joseph’s campus. She told us that there is a lot of poverty in Hopkins, especially concentrated on the north side of Excelsior Blvd. between Louisiana Avenue and Highway 169. She believes that if we became a host site, we might serve as many as 300 people per night. I have to admit that I was a little taken aback at the prospect of feeding that many people, but if that is the need in our area, then we are called to step forward and do what we can. We are still working out the details, but we are moving forward with becoming a host site for Loaves & Fishes. Our target start date is April 1. This program won’t interfere with our funeral lunches, and it will close for our rummage sales and fall festival. We are still working out how many days per week we will have in the beginning and which days those are. Once we have those details, we can begin coordinating volunteers from St. Gabriel’s, our neighboring parishes and from other congregations. I would like to thank Carla Sweeney for her work on moving this project forward. If you would like to help her coordinate this effort or express interest in volunteering, you can contact her at [email protected] or (952) 933-4433.

–Fr. Liekhus

To add a name to the list, please

notify the Parish Office. Because of the length of the list, names will be published for one month. Should you wish this extended, call the

Parish Office. Thank you.

Help us finish the inside of St. Gabriel the Archangel Adoration Chapel prayer space.

Construction on our Adoration Chapel was completed last fall. As we furnish the chapel with chairs and refinish our current kneelers to make them more comfortable we invite you to fund a new chair ($700.00) or a kneeler ($400.00) in honor of your family, your organization or as a touching tribute to loved one. Your generous donations of any amount are a great way to build on the bequest we have received. Please note Adoration Chapel on your donation and place them in the Sunday collection or mail to the parish office.

Jesus will give you His peace when you spend time with him.

Sharing our gifts with God and His Church

St Gabriel the Archangel's Sunday Giving

February 23, 2014 - 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time “But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…” Matthew 5:44

Love your enemies, easier said than done, no doubt. But, remember, the foundation of stewardship is prayer. When we are in close communication with God, it opens our heart and it turns our attention away from “me” and moves it towards God and others. It allows us to have a little more empathy for “our enemy”. When we pray for others, even “our enemies”, maybe it softens their hearts as well.

If you are not already participating in our 2014 Stewardship efforts to support our weekend worship and ministries at St. Gabriel, forms are available in the back of the church and in the parish office.

Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration

Jesus Christ waits for you in the silence of the chapel To give you His peace, His grace, and His love.

Be His instrument. Change the world.

Come sit in the presence of God. Volunteer to watch one hour with Jesus. For more information or to register to adore our Lord, call Barb at (952) 933-8423, Roberta at (952) 935-1774, or email Roberta at [email protected].

2014 Catholic Services Appeal “Seek first the Kingdom of God.” Matthew 6:24–34 The 2014 Catholic Services Appeal (CSA) is underway. We will show the video at Mass this weekend and we have included a CSA insert in this bulletin to help share information about ministries you help when you give to the CSA. Please take a moment to look at the insert and if you have not made your contribution to the 2014 appeal, please consider doing so to support the vital ministries it funds. At Mass next weekend, we will distribute pledge envelopes to give everyone an opportunity to participate. The appeal funds services that no one parish or individual can support alone. These services must go on despite these troubled times in our archdiocese. It is important to know that contributions to the Catholic Services Appeal will be used for the benefit of designated ministries of the Appeal and for no other purposes. Please visit the new Catholic Services Appeal Foundation website at csafspm.org for more information. This year, the theme of the appeal is: “Seek first the Kingdom of God”. Funds given to the

Catholic Services Appeal help to share the message of salvation not only in our parish but throughout our local Church and beyond. Commit to helping the CSA supported ministries. Then, please contemplate God’s gifts to you and reflect on your gratitude for these gifts. Your financial support for the work of our parish and vital ministries throughout this local Church is one way to express this gratitude. Thank you.

ADULTS ONLY EVENT -Protecting Our Families from Pornography

This Sunday, February 23 at St. John's Campus, 6:00 to 7:30pm in the community room. View a DVD, pick up written information and listen to a talk by an FBI Special Agent. Free will offering. Any questions contact Kathleen Esh, (952) 933-7610 or [email protected]. Sponsored by ACCL -A Community Caring for Life.

"A common root of pornography use is a need to have control in our lives, yet pornography produces sexual frustration and the desire to act out. So what we seek to achieve from pornography in the form of control ends up controlling and enslaving us." Daniel Spadaro, LPC, CSAT, "Life Matters: Pornography and Our Call to Love." Our children are often victims of the pornographic industry.

Richard Rafferty: 1924 - 2014 The pastor at the time of the construction of the current worship space at St. John’s campus was Father Leo Howley and the architectural firm was Rafferty, Rafferty and Tollefson of St. Paul, still a respected architectural firm. Richard Rafferty, one of the partners, died and was buried last week from St. Mary of the Lake Church in White Bear Lake. His death reminds me of the dedication, skill and faith that he and his

firm put into the construction at St. John’s campus. Father Howley’s knowledge of Scripture, especially of the spirituality of St. John’s Gospel, influenced the Rafferty’s: there were clear glass skylights over the altar and the Baptism font (which later had to be replaced with clouded glass); the Baptism font was placed right in the middle of the entrance area; the slit window was placed to reveal the Tabernacle of the prayer chapel to the main church; the brick walls were painted white; the pews sloped, with no pillars to block the lines of vision, to allow the presider as well as every congregant to have the sense of being together as one community; the lectern/pulpit (Liturgy of the Word) and the altar (Liturgy of the Eucharist) share the prominent space in the sanctuary – these things all define a worship space that encourages the folks in the pews to focus on the sanctuary space as well as on all those who are worshiping together, the family of God. The Rafferty’s have continued to be proud of their design; it has won architectural as well as liturgical awards through the years (those awards are displayed in the ramp leading to the community room), and often seminary students were toured through the church as a model of a good worship space. We pray that Richard, who helped us see God in sign and symbol, now sees God face to face. May he rest in peace. –Fr. Ralph Goman

Families Moving Forward (FMF) Reminder On Saturday, March 8 we will have the FMF information/training session at St John’s campus. SAN GABRIEL ARCANGEL

Confesiones, domingos 12;30pm Santa Misa, domingos 1:00pm

Pastor: Rev. Padre James Liekhus (Padre Jim)

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

LAS LECTURAS DE HOY Primera lectura — No te vengues ni guardes rencor, ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo (Levítico 19:1-2, 17-18). Salmo — El Señor es compasivo y misericordioso (Salmo 103 [102]). Segunda lectura — Tú eres templo de Dios y eres santo (1 Corintios 3:16-23). Evangelio — No ofrezcas resistencia; ama a tus enemigos (Mateo 5:38-48).
