Our Mission

Moral Education (Community Service) | FNBE April Intake | Taylor’s University3

Page 4: Moral report final

What is community service? Community service is a way to do good deeds and also doing goodwill for the community. Well, it’s a chance for Taylor’s students to do community service through the assignment under the subject Moral Education. It is an important task for everyone to support this community to make it peaceful and lovely. Sometimes, it is easy to say than do it. So, this is the time for us to spend our times wisely to take place in community service!

In the Moral class, Mr Serit Banyan, our Moral lecturer gave us the project (community service) and briefs us about this assignment. We are assigned to complete this project for 5 hours. After forming the group, all of us started to plan the community service and finally we decide to go to the Zoo Negara by being half-day volunteers. Honestly, it is an interesting but difficult task for us because most of us never participated in community service to zoo.

A total of 13 members from FNBE were involved in this community service. Early in the morning, we arrived at Zoo Negara before 8a.m. and greeted by the friendly zookeepers for a short briefing. The zookeepers then separated us to different exhibits so that we can help them in the exhibits. Kuok Wah, Lily, Edwin and I were divided into one group; Chua, Anthony, Hao Ren, Sim and Wee Min in a group while Eelyn, Voon Yin and Cassie in a group.

Different department have different task. Normally, the first task for us was to clean the cages of the animals. For Ronn’s group, we clean the pool which the sea lion performance and also collect the leaves surrounding of the backyard. Besides, we also feed the birds and help the worker to carry the cage to a place where they clean it. For Sim’s group, the girls were asked to clean the mouse deer’s area by swept the dry leaves and the ‘waste products ‘of the mouse deer. The boys in Sim’s group help the workers to feed the bulls with plants, clean the cage and also clear the fertilizer of the cow. Eelyn’s group is asked to clean and sweep the leaves of bird cage and feed various types of birds as well. Then, we also clean and feed the monkeys. We end up our community service at 4p.m. All of us were so exhausted by the time but somehow we still had energy to walk around the zoo. Before we departed, we also take a group picture as a commemorate.

Zoo is a heaven and shelter for exotic animals. Who say this community service is bored? I dare say that there are tons of exciting activities that can be done here like bathing the animal, feeding animals, play with them and so much more. Besides, this community service also instils love and increase compassion for animals. It is part of our duty as humans to care for animals, and this is a great opportunity for me and my members to work closely with animals. Although it was a sweaty and tiring experience, we still had a great time being real close with nature. Lastly, we would like to thank the Taylor’s Moral Education for giving us this opportunity to do a meaningful task.

Conclusion

After completing the volunteer in Zoo Negara, we get a deeper understanding and learnt more about the importance of clean environment for animals. This service also enables us to realise that as a citizen, we must be responsible and protect animals. Below are the reflections of every member:-

Chua Chang Yeong : “As a leader I learn about social communication, teamwork, responsible and planning of project. In this community service, I have learnt the important of environment for animals. As part of this earth, we must love other animals and protect them from not destroy the environment. Keep our environment clean and beautiful to

create a peaceful world. I also know more animals through this community service.”

Cassandra Wong : “It has been such an interesting experience to volunteer myself to help out at the Zoo Negara. I have learnt that it is not easy to feed all the animals and birds at the zoo alone, that's why this volunteer service is introduced. Besides that, I have learnt that team work is important to accomplish the tasks given out. I am glad to have minimized the work of the workers in Zoo Negara. ”

Cheong Siew Ying : “Through this community service, I learnt about care and love the animal as they also have feeling like humans , treat them the way as you want others to treat you . From my personal opinions , very sad to say that animal living in Zoo have no freedom because they have no freedom by trapping in the cage . Besides that , children nowadays not really have the basic knowledge towards to animal , for instance : during my service in zoo , I saw a little boy (around seven years old ) pointed to a monkey in c age and shouted “ King Kong’’……… a little girl tells her mother that the horse is eating the grass but sadly to hear that because it is not a horse but a goat . Lastly , I hope that everyone will concern about the children’s knowledge towards the animals by teaching them and also taught them love the animals .”

Chew Ung Heng : “I feel exhausted while going through this trip but I gain the experiences to serve community which I feel quite meaningful. I feel the cleanness of the environments where the animals live in are very important for them to grow up. I feel very warm while contact with them and I didn’t feel any wildness of them. Finally, I hope the public should take care of them and threat them as part of our family as well.”

Chia Wee Min : “Through this volunteer service at Zoo Negara, I have learnt to help out the zookeeper by cleaning the place where the animals live and feed them . Other than that, I have also learnt to work with team mates to accomplish the tasks given. Helping others out is worthy although we need to do some labour works. Finally, working as a volunteer in Zoo Negara benefits me quite a lot.”

Chua Jia Cheng : “I feel tired after all this work. I also feel happy because i get the opportunity to take care of the animal and serve the public in the same time. I also feel sad for the animal though they did a great

Moral Education (Community Service) | FNBE April Intake | Taylor’s University6

job entertaining the visitor but they lost their own freedom. I learnt to take care of the animal because they as well have feeling.”

Edwin Ho Khai Vun : “I am very happy have this opportunity to work as a volunteer in Zoo Negara. I learnt how to obey the rules that is given. When we obey the rules, there is no accident or complaint happen. Second, I learnt to work as a team. When we work together, we can do our jobs very fast, and smoothly. ”

Lee Kuok Wah : “This was my very first time to be a volunteer and becoming a Zoo Negara volunteer was quite fun too as we can work and feed those animals. I has notice that doing a zookeeper wasn't an easy job as I has given a task to clean the big aquarium for the seal to do performance and it was so tiring especially netting those leaves on the bottom of the water. I am glad that I able to help those zookeeper to reduce their work as they need to clean the water twice every day. I has learnt that there is no easy work, we should work hard in every task given.”

Lily Then : “It was a very interesting experience. Working as a Volunteer of Zoo Negara was very exhausted and it was a unforgettable memory. As a Volunteer of Zoo Negara, I have learnt that team work is very important to accomplish the tasks given out and it was not easy to be a Zoo Keeper and Zoo Cleaner. I’m glad and happy that I have been given a chance to be a volunteer of Zoo Negara.”

Ling Hui Sim : “I had a great experience through the community service. It’s quite tired but we had lots of fun working as volunteer at the Zoo Negara.Besides, I felt lucky because the zookeeper arranged me to swept the leaves while the other need to clean up the buffulo’s faeces. Nevertheless, I was glad we are able to learn new things from this moral project.”

Tsang Hao Ren : “It was a very interesting experience. Some might even felt remorse if they were given the same job as me but doing it once in a while was ok for me. Working there a day with other volunteers was already tired, I couldn’t imagine how the workers treat this as daily routine. Nonetheless, I was glad to be able to ease the worker from his job for even a single day.”

Wong Voon Yin : "Through this community service, I felt that volunteering to serve the nature is not really a waste of time. It benefits oneself

Moral Education (Community Service) | FNBE April Intake | Taylor’s University7

Page 8: Moral report final

too , I learnt a lot of stuffs while volunteering, like how to feed the animals, and cleaning the home of the animals, etc. Besides that. I could feel the bond between the environment and us. We have to appreciate the nature too, and love the animals, also prevent them from extinction."

Chua Chang Yeong10th April, Wednesday (10a.m.-12p.m.)

This is the first and the onlt assignment Mr. Serit gives us for the module, Moral education. It’s a community service. Everyone has to perform a community service in group. So, my friends and I form a group of 12 people in the class and I have been chose as their group leader for this project. We then plan for the date of next meeting to have a deep discussion next time.

Page 11: Moral report final

18th April, Thursday (9a.m.-11a.m.)

Today, we have discussion about our desired place to visit. T-Ratana Old Folk Home or the Ti-Ratana Orphanage Home are choices I searched. After that, we have chosen to visit the Ti-Ratana Orphanage Home and plan the date on 1st June 2013. For transportation, we have 2 cars that are Voon Yin’s and Wee Min’s car. We also plan to have activities like dancing (Gwiyomi) , games and craft making. Before we dismiss, we also discuss about what to brings for the clean-up operation of that days.

25th April, Thursday (9a.m. - 10a.m.)

Today, we suggest the games we searched and also explain how to play. After that, we have vote for our desired games. Finally, the ‘Killer Game’ has 7 highest votes and also the ‘Music chair’ also has a 7 votes. Because we have to choose 3 games, we choose ’Boom passing’ as the third game although the game ‘Throw the newspaper’ has a same voting, we are prefer the game ‘Boom passing’. All the games we discussed are considered the players (kids). So, we won’t have choose the games which are difficult and dangerous for kids.

29th May, Wednesday (9a.m.-10a.m.)

Today, we discuss again about the transportation because Voon Yin can’t drive. We then plan: some members go with Wee Min’s car and others go with bus and LRT.We then search the map online and discuss the way to get to the destination. Besides, we also learn some craft (heart shape, dog and bird) to get prepare. Unfortunately, for the community service to orphanage home has been cancelled after discuss with everyone because the unit always not giving the details and seem like not interest with us. We try many calls to the unit, sometimes, no people answer and sometimes the people in charge Ms. Casey keep call me to send an e-mail to her but she also didn’t answer my proper question and it is hard to communicate with her. So, finally we have change our mind and to volunteer in the Zoo Negera. We search about the volunteer programme of Zoo Negara, and it’s very late at night, so we have to dismiss and have a meeting the next day.

30th May, Thursday (9a.m.-10a.m.)

Today, we have a call to the unit of Zoo Negera and plan to have a service there on 2nd June (Sunday). After that, I explain to every member what to wear and bring RM10 for the contribution of wildlife environmental education program. I also announce that all members should meet at the main entrance of Zoo Negara at 8a.m. For transportation, Cassandra and Eelyn will go with Voon Yin, Wee Min will go herself and others will go together with taxi from Taylor’s 7-11.

01st June, Saturday (8a.m.-12:30p.m.)

Early in the morning, about 6:30a.m., I meet those members who go with me in front Taylor’s 7-11. Kuok Wah then sends me a message that he will go there himself. When we reach there, we gather and wait for the time. Some members are late that we can’t wait for them, so we have to start our task first. And, I sms them where to go and what to do when they reach. The worker tells us about the volunteer rules and then divides us into groups of 4 or 5. Kuok Wah, Edwin, Lily and I are same group. First, we go to the water pool. We clean the floor and wash the pool to provide the clean environment to the sea lion to have a better performance. We then go to the back door to collect the leaves.

Finally, we feed the birds and clean the place where the birds live. This is a wonderful memory for me because this is the first time I do community service and it is meaningful.

They brought us to the children section which consists of birds, hippopotamus, pony, rabbits, deer, etc. Then they gave us our first job - feeding fruits to the hornbill. This is our first time feeding a gigantic (not to say scary!) bird. The staff opened the cage, and showed us how to feed them and where to put the fruits. It was fun. After that, i was separated from my 2 group members to go help out at the hippopotamus area! A guy, not sure what was his name volunteered to help me out too. We separated the foods which

will be fed to the hornbills and hippopotamus. The sack (guni) was filled with lots of greens and fruits. After helping out feeding the animals, I then found my other 2 group members (thank God!). We then help sweep the compound, sweep the leaves. We also get to have a chance to look at the monkeys! They were so cute, and it was a pity to see all of them being locked up in the cage. After all, it was a really great experience at the Zoo Negara. It’s never easy to work at the zoo, feeding all the animals and birds, cleaning the cages all alone! I really hope more students or volunteers will help out at the zoo.

In this meeting, VOOYIN said that she can’t drive us to the venue by having some problems so we need to decide on the transportation again. Soon, we chose the LRT and WEEMIN’s car as the transportation. After that, we learned to make some crafts that used to teach the children that day. We had learned to make heart shape, bird and dog and it is definitely not easy for me. Unfortunately, the orphanage home didn’t give any response for our answer and it caused we can’t got the accurate details of the orphanage home. After that, we had made a hard decision which is cancelled the community service in orphanage home and changed to be volunteer in Zoo Negara.

I am in charge of the buffalo which is incredible huge and hard. Me and Tsang Hao Ren clean the cage feed them and clean the bull shit as well. The grasses are so heavy and spiky that it cuts my arm and blood comes out. It was a super tiring and special experience for me but it is worth to see the zoo can be maintained so nicely. I also pity the zoo keeper because if we did not help he will have to work all by himself. Then we have lunch break and when we go back the job are mostly done then we pack up and get ready to home for some rest.

We have been sent to the ocean place which for the dolphin and sea lion to do performance at 11.00 a.m. First, I have been ordered to clean up the leaves in the ocean, this is very tiring because netting leaves in the water need to consume a lot of energy. We will discussed the finalize everything on the next meeting.

29th May, Wednesday (9a.m.-10a.m.)

I did not attend to this meeting, because I was sick.

But I got some updates from the other group members. They had a discussion about the transportation as I (Voon Yin) could not drive to the orphanage. So we have 2 choices which are the LRT and Wee Min's car. They learnt how to make craft (heart shape, bird, and dogs) But unfortunately, they did not reply our request, we could not get accurate details of the orphanage home, So we had to cancel the community service to the orphanage, and change to go for volunteering for a community service at Zoo Negara.

30th May, Thursday (9a.m.-10a.m.)

There were some problems regards about going to the orphanage, so we changed our plan.

So we decided to change it to Zoo Negara at Ampang , we will be starting our services on Saturday, 1st June 2013 from 8.15am until 12.30pm.

Moral Education (Community Service) | FNBE April Intake | Taylor’s University44

Page 45: Moral report final

The transportation will be by Taxi for those who are departing from Taylor's University, Wee Min and I are planning to go there from our home, since it is nearby our house.

So we've solved most of the transportation problem.

We also discussed what we should wear and bring on that day.

And the group leader confirmed everything with the other members, and set that all the members should meet up in front of the main entrance of the Zoo Negara by 8.10am.

01st June, Saturday (8a.m.-12:30p.m.)

8.10am we gathered in front of Zoo Negara's entrance, and ask for the community service, the staff there lead us to the Education Department of the Zoo Negara. The staffs from the department separated our group into a few small groups. Each one of us will be conducting our community service in different section of the zoo. My small group consists of 3 people, which are Cheong Siew Ying, Cassandra Wong and I. They brought us to the Children section. It is a really small section, and gave us our first job - feeding the hornbill. This is our first time feeding a gigantic bird. They gave us a few plates of the bird's food (contains various types of food) . The staff opened the cage, and showed us how to feed them and where to put the feeds. Then, the staff asked us to try to do it. So we did it, it was not really bad... But quite scary though. Imagine there was a few gigantic birds starred at you when you entered their home, while you're holding the food. I was really scared that the bird will attack me. But luckily they did not. It was fun though! Feeding the animals from the zoo.

Our next task is cleaning the area. There are a few places were filled with dry leaves, we have to clean it. So they gave us some broom and asked us to sweep. And I experienced there were a lot of mosquitoes over there! I got bitten for a few times. But for the sake of serving the community and the animals, I ignored those bites and enjoy my work.

The staffs there were really friendly, they let us walk the pony too. The pony is really adorable! It's our first time walking the pony. That was one of the best time in the zoo. We got to communicate with the animals too.

After we did so many job, it was 12.00pm already! Time passed so fast. Since we only asked for half day of community service, so we stopped at this time, Siew Ying, Cassandra Wong and I signed our Community Service attendance into their attendance book and bid our goodbye to our section staffs.

After that, the whole group meets near the entrance again; we discussed what we learnt and what we should pass up to our Personal Journal, Bio data and Feelings to our group Leader - Chua Jia Cheng on 7th June 2013.

After the discussion, we end our meeting there and went back home respectively.

This is a really great opportunity given by our Moral Education Assignments to make us undergo this kind of experience of doing a community service which I really appreciate.
