Notes from Mrs. Broaddus Thanks to all of our parents, staff and students for making this year’s opening so

successful. We had a fantastic month of September and have settled in for the year. Students are in a

routine by now and things are running smoothly.

Every year the staff of Mountain View creates a School Improvement Plan (SIP). We have set goals for

the year and created tasks to reach these goals. As the year moves forward, we will revisit this plan and

monitor our progress. If you would like to view our SIP it is posted on our web page. Three of our goals

for the year (TA01, TA02, and TA03) are set up to identify, service and monitor students that are at-risk

of not being on grade level by the end of the year. We will be doing this through intense small group

instruction during what we are calling “Power Up” Time. Our volunteer coordinator will soon be setting up

a Sign-up Genius to help recruit volunteers to work with students during this time. Please be sure to look

for information on this soon.

Food Recovery Program

This week we started our Food Recovery Program. We are one of 6 schools

piloting this program in Loudoun County. All items purchased from our

cafeteria that have not been opened can be placed in bins outside of our

cafeteria. These items will then be given to our local food banks to help feed

families in need. This is not a Food Drive, items packed in lunches from

home should be returned home in your child’s lunch boxes. The hostesses in

the cafeteria will be there to help children decide what can still be donated.

I will continue to stress to students that it is important that they eat their lunch and not “save” items for

this cause. However, there are some items they do not care for that are part of their lunch and can be

donated. So far we are off to a good start!

Safety Drills Next week, we will be conducting our safety drills here at Mountain View. The

Tornado Drill will be conducted on Monday, October 6 at 9:35 AM. Students will be

instructed where to go for safety and practice kneeling down and covering their

heads. Bus evacuation drills will be held on Tuesday, October 7 as students are

exiting the buses. Wednesday, weather permitting we will conduct our Fire Drill.

The Earth Quake Drill will be on Thursday at 9:35 AM. Finally we will practice our

Lock Down Drill on Friday. Procedures include: All students gather with the

teacher in the classroom away from the door and windows. The door is locked by the teacher and the

lights are turned off. Attendance is taken in each classroom. Further instructions are given according to

the circumstances. We would use this drill if there was an intruder in the building or a threatening

situation on school grounds.

We are required to practice all of these drills throughout the school year. I will walk the students through

the tornado, earth quake and lock down drills using the intercom. Please be sure to discuss these drills

with your child before and after the day of the drill.

This year we will be featuring students’ personal accomplishments on our morning

announcements. These features will air Fridays on MTV, our local morning news show. This

could be graduating to a new belt in karate, earning a scout badge, taking a class outside of

school, etc. Our students enjoy learning about their classmates on the news. Students may bring in

trophies or medals to show on the news show, but remember this will only be done on Fridays. Please

keep these to recent accomplishments. Students should report to their homeroom teacher first, then to the

TV Studio in room 14. Thanks for your help!

News from SEARCH Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test

All Loudoun County third grade students will take the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test in October, 2014.

The test will be given to students in their regular classrooms during their usual SEARCH time. Please

prepare your child by making sure that he/she is healthy, well-rested, and that he/she has eaten a good

breakfast on the day of the test. No other preparation is needed!

In order to help you, as parents, better understand the NNAT2, here are some frequently asked questions.

1. What does the NNAT2 measure? The Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test 2 assesses school learning

ability without requiring a student to read, write or speak. Instead, students rely on reasoning and

problem solving skills to complete the test items.

Many people assume that intelligence is differentiated in two categories: verbal and nonverbal. The

distinction actually refers to the content of the items on an intelligence test, not to the type of thinking or

intelligence required. Verbal and nonverbal tests are two different ways of measuring intellectual ability.

Currently in Loudoun County Public Schools, the main purpose for administering the NNAT2 is to identify

students for gifted services in the area of general intellectual ability. The NNAT2 results may also be used

to screen general ability for students whose school performance may be hindered by limited English

proficiency.

2. Why the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT2)?

The NNAT2 was chosen because it was nonverbal. LCPS was looking for a way to identify gifted students

who may not perform well on ability tests with a large number of verbal items, including students with

limited English skills or learning difficulties.

3. What types of questions are on the NNAT2?

There are four categories of questions on the NNAT2:

Pattern completion: requires the student to complete a pattern by determining both general

orientation and design details of the missing portion.

Reasoning by Analogy: requires the students to recognize a logical relationship between several

geometric shapes

Serial Reasoning: requires the student to recognize sequence of shapes and changes in a sequence

Spatial Visualization: the student must recognize how two or more designs would look when

combined

The geometric shapes and designs used for each test item are culture-free. A sample test item from the

NNAT2 is shown in the figure below (actual test items use blue, white and yellow because these colors are

most easily perceived by those with color-impaired vision).

4. Who will take the NNAT2?

Currently, all third grade students in Loudoun County Public Schools take the NNAT2 in the fall of the

school year. The NNAT2 is available to students in grades K-12 for intellectual ability testing.

5. How long is the test?

The test has 48 items which must be completed in 30 minutes.

6. How do I interpret the scoring report?

Percentile ranks range from 1 to 99, and describe a student's test performance relative to other students

of the same age in the national normative reference group. A student performing in the 95th percentile,

for example, scored higher than 95% of the students at his/her age. Ranks between the 25th and 75th

percentile fall within the average range of normative expectations.

7. If there is a significant discrepancy between a student’s performance on the NNAT2 and

his/her achievement in the classroom, should I be concerned?

Students may score well on the NNAT2 who do not demonstrate high levels of achievement in the

classroom. The NNAT2 demonstrates that these students have the ability to succeed in school, though

they may not have acquired the skills required to achieve at that high level. Alternately, there are

students who are very strong in the academic domain who may score poorly on the NNAT2.

The NNAT2 helps us identify students who may not demonstrate their ability on more traditional tests of

knowledge because of limited English proficiency, language or learning difficulties, or other factors that

may hinder achievement. It should be kept in mind that the NNAT2 scores give only one piece of

information about a student. As with any assessment, some tests will identify the strengths of students

more than other tests.

8. How does the NNAT2 help my child qualify for Gifted Education services?

The NNAT2 is one of the tests used by Loudoun County Public Schools to identify students in the area of

general intellectual ability.

Notes from the Clinic According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the Enterovirus D68

(EV-D68) is a non-polio enterovirus that was first identified in the United States over 50

years ago. Cases have recently been confirmed in several states. EV-D68 causes respiratory illness and

the virus can be found in respiratory secretions such as saliva, nasal mucus, or sputum. It can be spread

from person to person when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or touches surfaces and contaminates

them.

Mild symptoms of the disease may include fever, runny nose, sneezing, cough, skin rash, mouth blisters,

and body and muscle aches. There are no anti-viral medications currently available to treat the EV-D68

infection, so thorough hand-washing continues to be the most effective deterrent to illness,

followed by avoiding touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. In addition, avoidance of

kissing, hugging, and sharing cups or utensils with someone who is sick is important.

Library News Mark your calendars now so you won’t miss our Bedford Falls Autumn Book Fair. The

dates are Friday, October 17 – Friday, October 24. Two special family events are

planned for the book fair. These are:

The book fair will close Friday, October 24 at 10:00am.

Mountain View Elementary’s PTA

Wow! What an incredible start to the new school year! A heart-felt thanks to the 276 parents and

grandparents who have joined our PTA and to the 200 plus parents who have pledged their time and talents

to volunteer for Mountain View Elementary events and programs. Along with our school staff memberships,

our PTA will have over 350 members this year! These are record numbers and we are thrilled and

encouraged by your involvement!

Last month, in an effort to promote our family-school partnership as well as emphasize the importance of

literacy, we kicked off our largest fundraising event for the school year ~ a Read-a-Thon! The response

has been terrific and we are very close to reaching our goal of $10,000! Our students have been having fun

earning reward bucks and prizes for completing their required reading sessions as well as participating in

several school wide incentives. Thank you to all of our students, parents, teachers, grandparents,

administration and staff for working so diligently with our PTA to make this fundraiser a success! Funds raised

from the read-a-thon will be used for special assemblies, new academic challenges, author visits, classroom

supplies, field trip expenses, supplementary classroom supplies and some new events like a family dance and

Spring Carnival!

Another important family engagement program that is back this year is Watch DOGS ("Dads of Great

Students"). This opportunity is open to all interested Dads, Grand Dads, Uncles and father figures who are

willing to spend one school day this year at Mountain View assisting with a variety of tasks with the focus on

student academics and safety. There is a set schedule for our Watch DOG Dads to follow and you will have

a chance to have lunch with your own child as well as join them in their classroom. Interested individuals

should contact Diana Wilcox, our Watch DOG Coordinator, at diana.willcox@me.com. We hope you

will consider becoming one of our "Hallway Heroes!"

Sock Hop: The PTA is pleased to sponsor a new event this year... a family Sock Hop Dance! This

exciting event will be held on Friday, October 24th and is open to all members of our students’ families.

There will be a DJ, dance games, snacks and the teacher experience raffle! In an effort to support the

Backpack Buddy program this year, we are asking for a food item as your admission to the Sock Hop. Our

Backpack Buddy Program provides food for the weekend to Mountain View children in need and food

donations are welcome all year long. Please consider bringing single serving sizes of Mac and Cheese, Tuna,

Soup, Juice Boxes, Shelf Milk, Cereal (Oatmeal or single serving), Granola Bars, Apple Sauce, Canned Ravioli

or small bags of Goldfish. Thank you, in advance, for helping to ensure that all of our students are well fed

over the weekends.

PTA Member Ballot for the 2015 Legislation Program: Also this month, all PTA members will have a

chance to review and weigh in on the proposed Legislative Action Items and Position Statements the Virginia

State PTA will bring before the General Assembly in January, 2015. This year's positions have to do with

increased school funding as well as appropriate mental health services for our children. Please look for your

ballot the week of October 9th and plan to return it to school by October 27th. We appreciate your support

in helping advocate for the needs of all children.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program/competition that provides creative problem solving opportunities for students in

Kindergarten through college.

Does your son or daughter like to think “outside the box”? Odyssey of the Mind fosters creative problem solving, a skill that can last a lifetime. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and world level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.
