MOOC

Massive Open Online Course, is a term used to describe web technologies

that have enabled educators to create virtual classrooms for thousands of

students accessible across the world.

Early MOOCs often emphasized open-access features, such as open

licensing of content, structure and learning goals, to promote the reuse

and remixing of resources.

Radio and Education

Broadcast radio was new in the 1920s and with programs that were free to audiences

of any size. By 1922, New York University operated its own radio station, with plans

to broadcast practically all its courses. Other universities soon followed suit, including

Columbia, Harvard, Kansas State, Ohio State, Purdue, Wisconsin, Utah and many

others.

Students read textbooks and listened to broadcast lectures, while mailing in answers

to tests. Journalist Bruce Bliven asked: "Is radio to become a chief arm of education?

Will the classroom be abolished and the child of the future be stuffed with facts as he

sits at home or even as he walks about the streets with his portable receiving-set in his

pocket?

EMERGENCE OF MOOC

Page 6: Mooc audio

MOOC

In September 2013, edX

announced a partnership with

Google to develop Open edX,

an open source platform and

its MOOC.org, a site for non-

xConsortium groups to build

and host courses.

Many MOOCs use

video lectures, employing the

old form of teaching using a

new technology

With the first correspondence courses in the 1890s from Columbia University, distance learning has been successfully providing higher education to the masses.

In the last 5 years a new form of education has arisen, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).

MOOCs are popular all over the world through which learning is measured, evaluated, and accredited.

AUDIO MOOC – The Proposal

The university will use the i-radio platform to create the first Audio MOOC. Except the lone

example of an audio MOOC from IIT Kanpur which is limited to short messages accessible via dialup

connections.

Web based I-Radiolive is being positioned as the world’s first audio MOOC. We have the

infrastructure, platform to host, world class audio broadcasters to design, train and present the

programmes.

The platform enables recording of all the Hindi/Urdu/English language lectures including phonetics.

The platform’s customized mobile app for android and windows phones makes audio listening simple

and cost effective

The entire course will be produced with excellent script, production, sound effects etc., I-Radiolive will

also register with MOOC.org as an institutional provider and link it with the EdX site and

Swayam.org. There is no fee for these services.

The audio MOOC will strengthen the Indian way of teaching through the 21st century tools. The

university will emerge as the pioneer in offering courses through audio.

IMPACT

Page 12: Mooc audio

Impact

In the future we may see major changes driven by the rise of MOOCa, in

the way higher education institutions measure achievement, offer courses

and earn revenue.

Universities hit hard by budget constraints may offload the economic

burden of lower level courses like introductory mathematics to MOOC

providers while they focus on efforts on higher division courses.
