“ EPIPHANY THE SEASON FOR CELE-BRATING THE UNIVERSAL REVELATION
OF JESUS CHRIST.”
January 2015
( By: Rev. Benjie D. Gevera Administrative Minister of UCCP-Sabang Church of Christ Dis-
ciples )
1. THE WORD ON EPIPHANY:
The Christmas Season ends on Epiph-any Day which is the 6th of January. The word EPIPHANY comes from the Greek epiphaneia which means “ ap-pearance “ or “ manifestation. “ It cele-brates the visit of the Magi to the stable at Bethlehem. The Magi or the Wisemen or the three kings, as they are popularly called, were not Jews for they were from the East. The appearance of the Star of Bethlehem to them and which brought them to Bethlehem is considered the manifestation of God to non-Jews which is the Gentile world. Other appearances are acknowledge at Jesus’ Baptism and at the wedding at cana where He change of wa-ter into wine.
When Christmas or the Day of incarnation was transferred to December 25 in the
fourth century of the Christian Era. It was then the date of the winter solstice in the western regions. January 6 was declared the Day of Epiphany to coincide with the visit of the Magi. But its meaning is deeper that the mere birth of Christ for Epiphany signifies the whole purpose of
the incarnation: To manifest God to all the world.
The season of Epiphany continues until the third Sunday before Lent, that is ash Wednesday. It is mark with the
need and desire to share the Christian
faith with others outside the fold: It is for celebrating the universal revealation of Jesus, his being “epiphanized” or shown forth as the Savior of all though his manifestation to the Gentiles. The color of our liturgical motif is white, because of the two famous reasons: a.) It sym-bolizes the joy of God’s appearing to all people in the person of Jesus Christ, and b.) It’s also a semblance of the purity of His Love expresses and realized in Jesus Christ. The Living Lord of life and history.
Epiphanytide or the Season of Epiphany, is often associated and cele-brated as the beginning of the global concerns and mission of the church to the world. Indeed, beyond the Jewish to the Gentile world. This only highlight Christ’s revealing Himself into the world.
11. BIBLICAL REFLECTION :
The texts for our Reflection is found in the Gospel of Matthew 2:1-12; Psalm 72:10-15; Isaiah 40:1-9; 60:6.
The story of the visit of the wise men from the East gives several insights for Christian today.
First; these men were the scientists of their day. They were astrolo-gers, studying the heavenly bod-ies in order to receive messages of utmost importance for the world. They were thorough and they were patient. They at-
tended their job of research and interpretation of their findings.
Secondly; they were earnest in their religious quest too. Somewhere in their studies, they learned that when an extraordinary star ap-

pears in the sky, that is a sign that a KING was to be born who will rule the world. Even, while the knowledge of facts and figures would have been suffi-cient for others, for them it was nothing compared to the possibility of a new King being born. So, they left their laboratories and went in haste, to see this things that had come to pass, that they may offer Him gifts.
c. Thirdly; when they came to the place where He was born, the poverty of the place did not deter them, but more importantly, they recognized Him as the Great King, and in deep obeisance, paid homage and worshipped Him. And they offered Him gifts fit for a king, gold, frankincense and myrrh.
They knew in their heart of hearts and from their intellectual pursuits, this lowly babe in the lowly manger, was the one the world had long awaited.
THE SAVIOR! THE MESSIAH! LIBERATOR! The Lord of lords and King of kings!

Christmas Camp insight …. By Mark Louise Mabbatung

SCCD carols members… Last Dec 7 until Dec 15 mem-
bers of different CROs group
together for Christmas carol
activity. A total of Php 61,002
was gathered and would be
evenly distributed to the partici-
pating organizations to help with their funding
needs. The caroling is an annual tradition of the
church.
SIMBANG GABI NOW AND THEN
The changing of times does not break the preservation of celebrating Simbang Gabi in SCCD. It’s not just a tradition because we need to do so but this is the mo-ment that strengthens relationships among family members and a time where our faith is intensified. This is the time where we mostly feel the presence of the Lord because it is the spiritual preparation for Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ. Simbang Gabi was scheduled from Dec 16-Dec 24, exhorters have shared their different insights while different boards and organizations sung for the anthem. Families too were assigned to sponsor coffee/bread/sopas/lugaw that were served after simbang gabi service as one
way of having fellowship with everyone.
Christmas Camp
The Christmas camp is held annually by the LCSMC
CYF Committee. Our representative Mark Mabba-
tung joined the camp last Dec 26-Dec 30 at Daang
Balite, Lalaan 1st, Silang, Cavite. With him were
Allyan Jell Samonte and Mischelle Quezon as one of
the staff. The camp‟s theme focused on how the
youth can shine like stars in the sky with a
registration of 1,500 each camper.

Communicants’ Class 2015 will start
on January 10, 2015, every Saturday
at 10:00 am to 12 pm. Calling all
those youth turning 12 this year or
older who have not been received yet
as full member of SCCD to attend this
class. The Pastoral Team will serve
as teachers.
Proclaiming Christ Concert & Worship. This year we had our Christmas Cantata last De-
cember 28, 2014 that was incorporated in the wor-
ship service.
Rev. Dr. Simon Chan shared that the story of
Christmas in the gospel of John carries out a hope-
ful but serious message. It is indeed good tidings of
great joy that (1) God himself has come to us in the
person of Jesus Christ (2) Light has dawned to dis-
pel darkness. But it is also a sobering message to
know that the truth tells us to reject falsehood, to
live in the light and not in darkness not just on this
day, but for as long as we live. After the sermon
was the choir cantata with the following songs ren-
dered: My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord, The Prom-
ise Messiah, God Rest ye Merry, O Holy Night, O
Little Town, What Child is This, A Festive Gloria
and Silent Night.
Indeed God is really great for giving us His Son Je-
sus Christ as
gift to humanity
and the world
will never be
the same again
because of the
coming of the
True light.
Family Night Every Christmas, it‟s already a tradition of Sabang to
have a family night during Simbang Gabi. For this year, it
was suggested by the CEN Board to have the altar be
decorated with a Filipino motif(bahay kubo nativity).
CROs presented Filipino dances. First prize was awarded
to CYAF then the CYF got the 2nd prize. Bibingka was the
main delicacy for the night.
Our Intimacy with God
Our intimacy with God—His highest priority for our lives—determines the impact of our lives. Genesis 1:26
One of our greatest needs is to know we are loved. Each of us has to feel certain, deep down in our hearts, that someone loves us, cares for
us, and has our best interests at heart.
That is how God designed us. He wants us to know He loves us with a passionate intensity too deep for words.
God created human beings with fellowship in mind—first with Himself and then with others. But we cannot fully love one another until we
have ourselves experienced the love of God. We experience His love when we willingly surrender to His call to be our Savior, Lord, and Friend.
There are at least three reasons God seeks our surrender:
1. He loves us and desires our fellowship and worship. As long as we hold something back from God, we cannot know Him completely or fully experience His love. When we surrender to Him, we get all of Him.
2. He wants our service for Him to be effective and fruitful. The more we know and love Jesus, the more effective our service will be. The closer we draw to God, the more impact our lives will have. The more energetically we nurture our relationship with the Lord,
the greater the positive mark we will leave behind. 3. He waits for the freedom to bless us. God is omnipotent, but He will not violate His own principles. He draws us to Himself so we
can experience His love and forgiveness. He asks for our willing surrender so that He can give us the best blessings He has to offer.
So why do we resist? With all this in mind, why does anyone resist surrendering to God?
Pride is the key reason most people resist surrender. They think they know better than God and that they can handle their lives better than
He can, so they keep Him at a distance.
Others do not surrender because they fear what God will do (or not do) for them. They think that if they give Him control, He ‟ll make them do
exactly what will make them most miserable.
Still others refuse to surrender to Christ because they believe Satan‟s lie, which tells them God is judgmental and will punish them for their
mistakes.
All of this is completely false! God always has our best in mind. He will refuse us no good thing when we gladly submit to His will (Rom. 8:32).
He tells us, “„I know the plans that I have for you,‟ declares the Lord, „plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope‟”
(Jer. 29:11).
It only makes sense to surrender to God, because when we do, we grow close to Him—His highest priority for us—and we begin to have an
impact on our world.
Fulfill your destiny. Anne Graham Lotz once told an interviewer about the many trials she had faced in previous years, including her parents‟
serious illnesses and her son‟s battle with cancer. She finally came to the point where all she wanted was Jesus. “Just give me Jesus,” she
declared.
Anne realized that if she had a personal, intimate relationship with the Savior of this universe, then whatever problems she faced, He would
face them with her. He would bring a sweet resolve and a peace to her heart.
Is this the cry of your heart? Do you want to know the Savior and live in the fullness of His blessing each day? You can. David wrote, “They
who seek the Lord shall not be in want of any good thing” (Ps. 34:10).
When you accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior, He not only forgave you but also made you into a new creature. You were no longer standing
at a distance from God but were then able to draw near to Him.
If you have drifted in your devotion to the Savior and feel as though you grow more distant each day in your relationship to Him, then pray
that He will draw you near once more. He knows your weaknesses, and if you will tell Him you want Him to take control of your life, He will
come to you in a mighty way and bring hope and light to your situation, no matter how dark and hopeless it may feel (Is. 55:6, 7).

What is in saluyot that should merit your attention? Firstly, it is rich in beta-carotene for good eyesight, iron for healthy red blood cells, calcium for strong bones and teeth, and vitamin C for
smooth, clear skin, strong immune cells, and fast wound healing. In other words, saluyot is a nourishing green leafy vegetable. Secondly, it is the legitimate source of the world's raw materials for containers of rice, corn, sugar, mongo and other commodities.
Saluyot is a leafy vegetable popular among Ilocanos, pasao, pasao na bilog or tagabang among Tagalogs, and lumbal, sumpa or panigbin among Visayans. Saluyot is easy to propagate, you can start harvesting the leaves after one month. It is easier to plant
saluyot than any other crop since you don't need pesticide and fertilizer to grow the crop. If you have ½ cup boiled saluyot leaves (45g) for your lunch and dinner, you are assured with 20 kcal for energy, 1.3 g for protein, 0.3 g for fat, 3.1 g for carbohydrate, 0.4 for fiber, 87.3 mg for cal-
cium, 22.5 mg for calcium, 1,334 for beta carotene, 1.0 mg for iron, 0.02 for thiamin, 0.04 mg for riboflavin, 0.3 mg for niacin, and 10 mg for Vitamin C.
