THE STARTING LINESteve LofyThe Prez
s my first Presidents message Iwould like to start out to say it isan honor and privilege to be the
new Sundance President. I would alsolike to thank all those who helped formour club over 40 years ago and those whohave created the active club we havetoday. Our club has a structure, withvarious positions and yearly events, butthe real reason the club thrives is theconnections and friendships that enhancethe lives of each club member.
If you look among our club members you can findindividuals who haveachieved great athleticfeats . You can f indinspirational members whohave completed a 100 milerace, completed the Iron mantriathlon, decided to run 50miles for their birthday, or simple madethe decision to maintain a healthy lifestyleby walking at Grupe Park. I have takeninspiration from all these individuals andhave tried to spread this inspiration to myfamily and friends.
For me the club has been a place to see theworld outside of my sheltered cocoon ofwork, and my immediate family life, andget a chance to meet and becomes friendswith people from different walks of life.
My immediate goals as club president areto retain and enhance our successes suchas the CAL 10 race, the Saturday morningFun Run, club meetings with speakers, and all food related events (as our formerclub President extols "We are an eating
club with a running problem").
I am also interested in any ideas forincreasing our membership and meetingthe needs of current members. I havealready heard some fun new ideas andhave several people who are willing tohelp in implementation. If you have anyideas or wish to help in upcoming eventsmy phone is always on. Call or text me at(209) 479-3418. ( please leave a messageif I don't answer immediately )

Follow Your Instincts
Istarted running about the time I turned 40 years ofage. At that time I was mostly concerned withgetting in shape, losing weight and after that
increasing my running milage to higher and highertotals. Eventually, when I turned to competition, Istrove from the dream body, light, lean and muscular tothe ability to run endlessly. I went to may races. I keptincreasing my training. Small races became marathonsand finally I went to ultra distances and even extreme100 hundred mile runs through the mountains. Progresswas paramount. Not to run each day was unacceptable.I had to pace through the mileage, stress and soreness.Sometimes pains were simple challenges to overcome.Accumulating the miles, and therefore cardiovascularstrength and endurance were all that mattered then.
I finally outgrew such relentlessness. With maturitycomes the realization that high mileage competition, races, etc. are only part of the training precess. Moreimportant now is the time I spend training at acomfortable level of intensity. My training is a headtrip. I don’t even like to call it training. Now, when Irun, I put my body on automatic pilot and enjoy themotion.
I go hard sometimes and the old juices flow. But moreoften, I follow my body’s instincts. I can trust it to go at
a comfortable pace whereas my mind would rathergallop and eventually push me to the edge. When I amrunning, I do it slowly, only with certain intensity, notat a mammoth level. Freed from that pressure, aworkout gives me time to thing and enjoy what I amdoing. Without interruption, I sort through ideas. WhenI train with others at a congenial pace, we can talk. Theenhanced circulation clears my mind and brings forth aspontaneity of thought. Running becomes a retreatwhen I workout alone. The reflections and the highafter a workout are essential elements of my routines.
I have found that my body having set its own pace, responds optimally to the comfortable miles withoutstress or pain. Fitness and prevention of disease areconsidered by me the two primary functions of exercise.Of course, no guarantees!
I know I’m in better shape now that before. I feelstrong and full of energy. In addition, exerciseinfluences you in ways hard to define and measure. How do you measure self esteem? Running helps meexplore the limits of my mind. A comfortable paceallows you to enter your emotional and mental state. It’s a fulfilling and challenging life. Can you followyour instincts?

Vic’s VolcanoThe Road Less Travelled
The Jug & Rose, a 7.7 mile run on a paved road, about 95% downhill in the shade above a windingcreek, starting at Volcano, is Vic’s favorite course.
True to his style, Vic did it his way this year. Read on...
Afterward, in San Andreas, I saw Chris Brodehl at a gasstation. He said he had about 1:59 and got dinners andwine for being the oldest finisher.
Me? Sad story. I’d planned to arrive and take off superearly so as not to hold up things at the end. Well, a late
night at Black Oak, oversleeping, other unforseencircumstances - I arrived ~ an hour late rather than myintended early start. Decided to go anyway. A positivething further delayed me: why resist occasional clumps ofdelicious wild blackberries. I already was so late. Earbuzzing gnats were an unpleasant distraction; killed 11,scared the rest. A pickup truck with 4 guys at the ½ waypoint said everyone was winding down. At that point, Idecided I wouldn’t go all the way. Reached the 4 milemark in 1:52 when Jim Heryford’s (the winner) wife gaveme a ride back. Next year? A very early start. S
