President’s Message By: Jeff Forman May 1, 2019
Time to wind up the 2018-19 ASHRAE year Central Oklahoma. Although we surpassed last year’s performance in most every category and once again entered the Chapter Regional Conference (CRC) with the highest Presidential Award of Excellence (PAOE) points total in the region, the Austin chapter did a fantastic job developing a good chapter into one who won this year’s Golden Gavel. Congrats to them! But in the face of stiff competition, and thanks to everyone’s excellent teamwork and dedication, I’m proud to say we’ve left your chapter, which was already performing strong, in better shape and position than when we started! I would publicly like to personally thank all the chapter officers and my Board of Governors who agreed to serve last year when myself and the nominating asked for their help. As anyone in leadership knows, if you surround yourself with the right people you can accomplish great things. I hope you will plan to attend our final chapter meeting on Wednesday, May 1st at the MetroTech SW campus. We will be using a new caterer thanks to your Social Media chair Kaylee agreeing to help. Besides the Italian menu, our speaker will be another former ASHRAE Society President and Distinguished Lecturer (DL) Tim Wentz. Additionally we are set to have a strong student turnout from OSU and MetroTech. You won’t want to miss! In closing I would like to say thank you for allowing me to be president of this great Central Oklahoma chapter for 2018-19. I’ve been honored to serve with and after so many great people. Character Commitment Community Character – the inward values that determine outward actions Commitment - to be engaged, involved, available and to persevere Community - to work together, to give back and to focus on others Character Topic of the Month: Attentiveness vs. Distraction – Showing the worth of a person or task by giving my undivided attention. The internet of things (IoT), social media and the latest “stay connected” technologies have increased the pace of our lives, expectations of response times and encourage us to focus on multi-tasking and speed instead of attentiveness. Take a look around next time you’re in public, everyone has their head in their phone not focusing attention, much less undivided attention, to those around them. Even families eating together cannot seem to pull away from their media to focus and talk to one another! At its core, one could point to selfishness as the root cause for a lack of attentiveness. When you are not attentive, others may feel minimized or not important, respect may be lost, a relationship damaged or others may simply withdraw or disengage. Being attentive is tough these days. We all struggle with it at times, some of us more than others J. What’s the simple answer? There probably isn’t one, but we can consider the negative effects of not being attentive to others and start being intentional about changing our behaviors and habits. Checking our phones all the time has definitely become a habit work kicking! In summary, practicing attentiveness is part of “treating others the way you want to be treated” and “loving your neighbor as yourself.” So next time you and I are tempted to pick up the phone, let’s don’t and instead give those people around us more of us! -Jeff

Student Activities & Scholarship May Newsletter
By: Scott Sanders & Robert Smith
Thank you everyone for another great year! We had another successful year reaching students and continuing to grow our student membership. We would like to thank Kale Harper, a University of Central Oklahoma graduating senior for taking time to encourage students at UCO to join ASHRAE, and working hard to continue the Student Chapter that just had their Charter renewed last year. We cannot thank the students that have stepped up and are already assuming leadership roles for next school year. Please have a safe and enjoyable summer, and we will see everyone in the fall. YEA Brewery Tour By: Caleb Spradlin
Our April Event was at Vanessa House Brewery. It was a very fun event in partnership with our local Oklahoma ASPE Chapter. We had an excellent turnout of 18 people. We also were able to hold a raffle, congratulations to all of our raffle winners!
This was the last YEA event for this year. Thank you so much to all of our sponsors throughout the year. Not only did your sponsorships fund our YEA meetings, but they also help
fund ASHRAE leadership training trips for a couple of our YEA members every year. We couldn’t do any of it without you! Thank you also to all of our YEA members for making this a successful year!

Social Event
Night At the Track By: Jason Keyes
This year’s annual Social Event was held last Friday at Remington Park. We enjoyed a terrific speaker in Hoy Bohanon providing great information regarding ASHRAE’s BEQ program. The chapter can’t provide functions such as this without the help of sponsors and I want to take this opportunity to thank those that supported us this year including:
Darr & Collins, Mechanical Sales Midwest, Trane, Victaulic, RB Akins, and ABS.
THANK YOU!
