Ma hew 25:40 -- Whatever you did for one of the least of these
brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.
Most of us are fortunate enough not to know much about real
hunger and thirst. From "me to "me we might complain that we
are famished as we wait for our next meal. But our health is hardly
threatened when dinner is delayed for an hour!
Thanks to everyone who diligently help provide food for those in
need. From December 19 – January 20, 233 items were u"lized.
A touching story –
We received an envelope in the mail a couple weeks ago with
money in the envelope and a note saying – we have not been able
to come to church for a few weeks and donate to the food pantry,
so here is money. Please purchase what is needed. We did so,
took a picture, and e-mailed the photo to the couple showing what
their dona"on contributed to the pantry.

ABIDE 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament
On Saturday, March 4th, Hope Church is hos"ng a 3 on 3 basketball tournament where all
the proceeds are going to Abide Ministries. A lot of you are familiar with Abide, as Hope
has worked with them for the last couple years. Abide was started here in Omaha by Ron
and Twany Dotzler. Ron has spoken about Abide at our church in the past. Abide focuses
on transforming the inner city, one neighborhood at a "me. The Dotzlers started this
transforma"on over 26 years ago in North Omaha neighborhoods. Abide provides a holis"c
approach that focuses on developing healthy neighborhoods through four main areas:
community building, family support programs, housing and partnerships. Ron Dotzlers’ son,
Josh, played basketball for Creighton for 4 years and par"cipated in our basketball fund
raiser last year.
This is the 2nd year we are hos"ng this tournament and plan to con"nue it as an annual event con"nuing to build
year a'er year. Please consider suppor"ng this great effort to raise funds and awareness for Abide. If everyone
could talk about this with friends, co workers, neighbors, kids, grandkids, etc. and get one person to get a team of 3
together to par"cipate that would help make this a success. Also, if you would like, sponsor a team by paying their
$75 fee or help keep score or "me during the tournament, please see Dave Fehr, Adam Briley, Bre Jorgensen, or
Tyler Thraen.
There are flyers and entry forms in the Narthex.
Souper Bowl of Caring Sunday
Hope Church, that "me of year is here again when the two top teams do ba le on the field of
play to come out victorious…of course, we are referring to the annual Hope Church Souper
Bowl Sunday youth group food collec"on!!! Similar to last year there will be two bins in the
Narthex to collect can goods and packaged foods . Please donate non-perishable food items
(can goods, macaroni & cheese, ramen noodles, granola bars, etc.) in the bins. On Feb 5 the youth groups will
count all the donated food items in their barrels to see which youth group will be declared the victor. All the food
items will be donated to Together, Inc. which is a local organiza"on dedicated to preven"ng homelessness. For
more informa"on about the Souper Bowl of Caring you can visit their website h!p://www.souperbowl.org

Mission Spotlight of the Month JDRF
Juvenile Diabetes Research Founda"on
JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Founda"on) has led the search for a cure of Type 1 diabetes since 1970. In those
days it was called juvenile diabetes because it was commonly diagnosed in children. Today we know that an equal
amount of children and adults are diagnosed- approximately 110 per day. Thanks to be er therapies, which JDRF has
been instrumental in, and making available to people as they wait for a cure.
What is Type 1 diabetes – Type 1 is an autoimmune disease where the pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone
that people need to get energy from food. Type 1 strikes children and adults and onset has nothing to do with diet or
lifestyle. There is currently nothing one can do to prevent it and there is no cure.
Living with Type 1 is a constant ba le with daily injec"ons, tes"ng, diet control and exercise. People with Type 1 rely
on insulin to control their blood sugars. However, insulin is not a cure nor does it prevent the possibility of serious
side effects. Even with strict disease management, a significant por"on of the day is s"ll spent with high and low blood
sugars which can lead to serious complica"ons such as heart a ack, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and amputa"on.
JDRF wants a world without Type 1. They want to change the reality of the disease for millions of people—and
prevent anyone from ever knowing it. They do this by funding research, advoca"ng for government support of
research, and new therapies. JDRF has funded nearly 2 billion dollars in research to date.
A representa"ve from JDRF will speak to the congrega"on this month on ways to support JDRF whether it be your
"me, talents, voice, prayers or monetary dona"ons. For more informa"on on JDRF you can visit their website
h!p://www.jdrf.org/

Fellowship Submi ed by Tracy Comba, Fellowship Elder
If you missed our first, and hopefully not last, Trivia Night, on January 14, then you have no idea how much
fun was had! 45 people showed up for a night of food, fun and trivia. There were 8 rounds of 15 ques"ons,
with each round featuring a different topic. All who were there agreed we HAVE to do this again. Hopefully
we can make this an annual event!
If you are interested in volunteering for the Fellowship Tea food commi ee, it’s not too late. There has been
only one mee"ng so far, so you wouldn’t be out of the loop if you joined now. Contact Sharon Neubauer or
Tracy Comba if you are interested.
The Fellowship Tea is set for April 1, and we are looking for hostesses and butlers, so check your calendar if
that’s something you’re available to do. There are sign-up sheets in the Narthex.
We con"nue to look for volunteers to provide fellowship on Sunday mornings a'er service. If you are
interested, there is a sign-up sheet on the Narthex table, one on the refrigerator in the kitchen, or you can
email me at [email protected]. Thank you!

Dear Friends,
Have you lost all the weight you resolved to lose yet? Have you realized the financial stability you said you wanted
yet? Have you patched all your rela"onships, become a be er communicator, forgiven those who hurt you, corrected
your paren"ng mistakes, put the toilet seat down, made your bed, worked out, ate only healthy foods, slept at least 8
hours a night, cut down your screen "me, increased your in"macy, become more godly, grown your faith, witnessed
to others, became less judgmental, laughed more o'en, taken yourself less seriously, or whatever resolu"on crossed
your mind earlier this year? Have you accomplished any of that?
For most of us the answer is an empha"c “NOT EVEN CLOSE!” That’s not surprising because changes aren’t
completed in a short, “once and done” type of manner. Changes happen with inten"onality, repe""on, forgiveness
and support. Inten"onality is when we recognize our need for change and we decide to do something about it.
Repe""on is when we start doing new behaviors and having new thoughts and a<tudes, all of which feel foreign and
strange to us. It requires effort to do these things but the more we repeat them the easier it gets. Some folks say it
takes 7 weeks to form a new habit. Repe""on, even when we don’t “feel like it” is pu<ng that inten"onality into
prac"ce. Forgiveness comes into play because we will fail. If we are able and willing to forgive ourselves that goes a
long way toward restar"ng and con"nuing the process of change. If we don’t forgive ourselves it makes it all the
easier to quit. Finally support is gathering others around to encourage us in our new behaviors and a<tudes. Careful
choosing of our support system is crucial for us to accomplish our goals. The right support system can encourage as
well as challenge us, help us forgive ourselves as well as hold us accountable, accept where we are and push us
toward what we want.
It’s the same with our congrega"onal goals. We want to solidify our founda"ons through worship, discipleship,
mission and finances; grow our children, youth and our community, and deepen our faith in the God who calls us to
be His own.
These things will take inten"onality, repe""on, forgiveness and support to be realized over the next few years. It will
require crea"vity and our best reflec"ons, honest appraisals and clear suppor"ve cri"ques, self-forgiveness and
forgiveness of others and pu<ng aside our par"cular wants in order to address the needs of the whole.
As I said last month, we are in a regrouping, regathering period in our congrega"on. It’s important for us as we’ve
realized a need for a change in direc"on and prac"ce. Those kinds of decisions always cause some consterna"on as
we all have to make adjustments in our behaviors and a<tudes. Our expecta"ons have to adjust from what used to
be to what can be. We have to adjust from what I want to what God wants from me, from what was ‘normal’ to a
new ‘normal.’
As the new Session comes on board we will con"nue to solidify the par"culars of direc"on and prac"ce and con"nue
the process of becoming the church God wants us to be.
Blessings,
Pastor Dave

SUNDAY BIBLE STUDY FOR ADULTS IN THE LIBRARY Chuck Bulger expects his class to be focused on
Psalms through February. It is considered to be the most important book among the wri"ngs and
according to Luke was quoted as such by Jesus himself. Early Chris"an congrega"ons probably sang
hymns from the Psalter in their services. Luke believes words contained in Psalms are fulfilled in the
life of Jesus, and his disciples had to obey orders given in this book. [Luke 20:41-44; 24:44; Acts 1:20;
13:33] All are welcome. Refer your ques"ons to Chuck Bulger at 402-861-1904.

the church library to discuss Invisible Thread by Saura Schroff and Alex Tresniowski. The book is about a
successful ad sales rep in Manha an--stopping was never part of her plan. He was a homeless, eleven-
year-old panhandler who asked for spare change; she kept walking. But something stopped her in her
tracks, and she went back. She con"nued to go back again and again. They met up nearly every week for
years and built an unexpected, life-changing friendship that has today spanned almost three decades. “…
It drew me to him, as if we were bound by some invisible, unbreakable thread….” If you like to read, join
us. Facilitator is Georgia Bulger – 402-861-1904.
