I can hardly believe it, but we are looking for a new Director of

Children’s Ministries for the third year in a row!

Two years ago, Mindy Borgstadt and her family

moved to Des Moines because Justin was offered

a wonderful job opportunity (we’ve heard from

them recently, and they are all doing very well).

Then, last year Julie Johnson decided she needed

to step back because of all her commitments in

completing her Ph.D. And now, just this month

we’ve learned that Katie Chapdelaine will be leaving. Katie’s hus-

band Louis has been offered a wonderful job opportunity in Illi-

nois, and so they will be moving in May or early June. Katie has

brought wonderful energy and commitment to her work here, and

so we will find ways to share our appreciation and best wishes

before she moves.

Our Staff-Parish Relations Team (SPRT) is responsible for the per-

sonnel work of the church, and this team has already begun work

on the search for a new Director of Children’s Ministries. We are

advertising the position in Madison and statewide, but it is also

possible that we will find our next Director of Children’s Ministry

from within the membership of the church. Are you perhaps in-

terested in serving in this role, or do you know of someone else

who has the gifts and passion for doing this job well?

Here is a brief description of what is involved. The Director of

Children’s Ministry is responsible for the spiritual, educational, and

fellowship development of children at Bethany from birth to 5th

grade. The job is twenty hours per week, including about five

hours on Sunday mornings, with the weekday schedule being very

flexible. Responsibilities include coordinating childcare providers,

recruiting/equipping teachers and other volunteers, promoting

children’s ministries through the Banner and other forms of com-

munication, protecting the safety of the children, ordering curricu-

lum and supplies, designing and maintaining creative learning en-

vironments, and supporting teams in implementing special activi-

ties, events, and missions.

A much more complete job description is available. If you are

interested in applying, or if you have someone to recommend,

please speak to me or to SPRT Chair Shawna Bertalot soon. We

are hoping to find someone filled with creative energy and excite-

ment for this ministry!

Blessings in Christ,

Pastor Greg

P.S. – On a completely different topic, I want to lift up a mission

outreach opportunity that I hope you will consider. Twice each

month (on a Thursday evening and a Tuesday noon), volunteers

from our church serve meals at Luke House to about 100-150

community members struggling with hunger. The group serving

meals at noon on the 4th Tuesday of each month has a critical

need for additional volunteers – some of the longtime participants

in this group are no longer physically able to help. Is this a way in

which you could serve? If so, please contact our Bethany coordi-

nator Mary Kay Battaglia at 608-335-2429 or

[email protected].

April 2 Race Relations: Bethany’s Next Steps – co-presented by Outreach and Adult Ministries Teams

Come to be part of a discussion of what Bethany might choose to do to help with solutions to issues of racial injustice. This is not

so much a presentation as a roundtable conversation. It’s an invitation to share your ideas and possibly help to craft a recommen-

dation on Bethany’s role. Teresa Holmes of the Life Center Madison congregation will be joining us for the conversation. In re-

cent forums we have talked about inequities in racial justice: education, incarceration, economic opportunity, and more. We sup-

port The Playing Field. What else are we called to do? Is there one particular issue on which we could make an impact? Who

should our partners be? How can we be effective? Bring your thoughts, passions, and your hearts yearning for justice.

family!

April 23 1800 Days presented by Abbi Kruse and Harold Rayford

1800 Days is a non-profit organization that seeks to eliminate the achievement gap for minority children in Dane County. There

are 1800 days between birth and kindergarten entrance. A child's experiences during this critical period set the stage for not only

entry into formal education but for an entire lifetime.

1800 Days is connecting parents, churches, schools, and various community agencies with the common goal of eliminating the

achievement gap. This may sound unrealistic to some, but it is possible. 1800 Days is led by a team of believers, collaborators and

visionaries, whose common goal is to join hands and encircle this problem until it is healed.

April 30 Mission Trip Preview presented by Brigit Parlow and the High School Youth Group

What in the world are we doing?

In the past six years since the international peace mission to Ireland, the youth of Bethany have traveled to Hamilton, Ohio; Mus-

kegon, Michigan; Virginia Beach, Virginia; Martin County, Kentucky; and Avery County, North Carolina. This year we are going

not so far away – Minneapolis, Minnesota! Why so close? Well, let me tell you why.

It started out that we wanted to be more in “our own back yard” to help people closer to home. It was also to possibly save some

money so that we can look for an international mission down the road. My first look was toward Chicago, Illinois. There is a great

deal of need, but also a great deal of controversy there right now. Some parents, understandably, weren’t thrilled with my choice.

So, Minneapolis became the next choice. Although we won’t see many cultural differences from our own, we will be paired with a

church that is in a neighborhood in need. We will work with the members of the church to repair members’ homes, build porches

or wheelchair ramps, paint and fix up fences, etc. and spend some quality time getting to know family members. We hope to do

some relational ministry in the community as well. This will be the first time we pair with Praying Pelican Ministries, which is

based out of Minneapolis. Most of their work is done in Belize, and this will be their first year working in Minneapolis. We are

excited to be a part of their mission. If you are interested in checking out their website, please go to prayingpelicanmissions.org.

On April 30th we will be presenting a preview of this year’s trip. Come and learn all about what your youth will be doing.

"Climate Change as a Moral Issue" on Friday, April 7 at the Communi-

So it is a good subject to learn about at that location. Coffee, refresh-

WEB HELP WANTED

For times when I am on vacation for an extended period, especially in

the winter months, there is a need for help with keeping our website

updated. This includes keeping the Upcoming Events current, chang-

ing out the sub-attractors and main attractors, updating the Sermons

page and creating and uploading sermon audio files. The Content

Management System we use is WordPress, which is pretty easy to

learn. While most of this can be done from home, there would be

times when onsite work would be needed. Total time involved would

be about 1 to 2 hours per week.

If you are interested in helping out with this please contact the

Church Office. Thank you!

BETHANY CARE BUS

By Judy Franks

My son, Shawn, is handicapped and has been wheelchair-bound for

several years. He currently lives in a duplex with another handicapped

gentleman, as well as a live-in caregiver. Shawn and his current room-

mate are hoping to add one more handicapped gentleman to their

household soon. Granted there are TV sermons available on Sunday

mornings to watch, but when you live in a household where the TV is

shared with your roommates, then you must take the beliefs and

rights of your roommates into consideration. Therefore, the Sunday

morning TV services are not something that all members of the house-

hold can share.

I am so thankful for the Bethany Care Bus; it is such a wonderful

blessing. The Care Bus gives Shawn the opportunity to attend church

by providing him with a way of getting to and from church. In addi-

tion to that, it gives me the opportunity to accompany him on the

Care Bus rides to and from church, so that we can worship together.

The Bethany Care Bus is a fantastic service for the handicapped, elder-

ly and folks who have no other way of attending church. God has

definitely blessed Bethany United Methodist Church with the Care

Bus service, and I am grateful that we have this awesome service avail-

able to us.

NEW BOOKS IN THE LIBRARY

New books have been added to the UMW Reading Program in

memory of Katie Larsen and Irma Krogstad.

Boundless: What Global Expressions of Faith Teach Us About Follow-

ing Jesus, by Bryan Bishop. (Education for Mission)

Slowing Time: Seeing the Sacred Outside Your Kitchen Door, by Barba-

ra Mahany. (Nurturing for Community)

CLOWN MINISTRY SKILLS WORKSHOP

Saturday April 1st the Clown Ministry Group will be hosting a clown

skills workshop from 9:00 until noon in Room 228 at Bethany. If

you have ever wanted to try your hand at clowning, juggling, balloon

twisting, skit performing or a variety of other fun activities this will be

a good opportunity. We will be preparing for upcoming nursing

home visits and church services. You don’t have to spend the entire

morning at the workshop. Feel free to drop in before or after shop-

ping at the rummage sale.

BETHANY NEWS

MEET A SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER

This month, our “Meet A Sunday School Teacher” series features Katie. She has been attending Bethany since her parents joined the church in

1976 and grew up going to our Sunday School program. As an adult, Katie has been volunteering with our K-2 and Preschool classes since

2013. She is currently one of our Preschool class teachers. Here’s what Katie has to say about her time as a Sunday School teacher:

“I like that you get to talk with kids who are only three and four years old and hear their perspective on different things. They have such an

openness and joy about everything.”

“I really wanted to make sure each child had a great experience in Sunday School like I had growing up, so they could always look back on it

as they got older - when their lives get a bit more complicated.”

“I did initially have reservations about teaching since I had never taught before and had concerns that I would have difficulty managing a class

of kids or that I wouldn’t be able to answer all their questions. But after a couple of times, I began to have fun. I liked the program we teach

from and we have the ability to bring in any activity for the kids.”

THE VISION OF ISAIAH

Presented by Faith Bauman

March 26th, 10:00 am in Room 228

The originally planned Briarpatch forum that had been sched-

uled for March 26th had to be cancelled at the last minute.

Instead, come to hear Faith Bauman reveal the vision of Isai-

ah, an 8th century BC prophet, who writes of the evils and

inequities of his times (some of this will sound familiar to us

in our times) but who also offers a vision of a future filled

with hope and confidence. Isaiah foresees the coming of the

Messiah and describes the transformed life that, through the

Messiah, can be ours. Faith is a former missionary to India

who has spent a lifetime studying the Bible. Her presentation

is sure to both educate and inspire.

OUTREACH NEWS

Simple Gifts for April — “Habitat for Humanity” Simple Gifts for most Sundays in April will be going to support our partners with Habitat for Humanity. Gifts can be made by placing

loose coins in the offering plates or by putting cash or a check in mission envelopes.

This year, Bethany United Methodist Church is making a commitment to join with other churches in the Madi-

son area as part of Habitat for Humanity’s Faith Build for 2017. Bethany is one of six churches in the Madison

area working on a new home in the Renaissance on the Park development in Fitchburg beginning this spring.

As we wait for the ground to thaw and the weather to warm up, your Simple Gifts during April will help provide

the financial backing for this project. As a congregation, Bethany is committed to providing $7,500 for its part of

the construction materials to build the home. Through our efforts and those of many others who believe in the

work, over 250 homes have been built since Habitat for Humanity (HFH) of Dane County came into existence.

Bethany views the commitment of HFH “to build affordable housing for God’s people in need” as being at the

core of our work as United Methodists.

Bethany has supported two Apostles Builds over the past five years. An Apostles Build is the combined effort of 12 churches, where each

one raises a portion of the funds to support purchase of the building materials needed to complete an HFH house. Then each church co-

ordinates three Saturday workdays during the construction season. These 36 weekends represent the majority of the volunteer labor that

completes the house.

In addition, the Simple Gifts collection on Easter Sunday, April 16, is going to back one of Bethany’s Global Mission partners, Mujila

Falls.

Bethany also has a long-standing commitment to the Mujila Falls Agriculture Center in northwest Zambia, which

is led by Paul Webster, a rural economic and development specialist. At this farm, men and women of the Lunda

tribe learn sustainable and appropriate methods to grow crops and manage livestock. People in a large area bene-

fit from the eggs and plentiful food produced on the farm. Webster also provides support to the small Methodist

churches in nearby villages by occasionally preaching and helping with church construction. To learn more visit:

https://www.facebook.com/MujilaFallsAgCentre/.

Meanwhile, over the course of 2017, Bethany will participate in several special offering Sundays sponsored by

the broader United Methodist Church. Native American Ministries Sunday on April 30 nurtures mission with Native Americans and pro-

vides scholarships for United Methodist Native American seminarians. For more details visit: http://www.umcgiving.org/ministry-articles/

Please give generously, as your gift will make a difference in real and relevant ways.

all! Someone always ends up in the water, there’s creepy spiders,

and always pizza afterwards!! Join us, won’t you? Meet at 12

noon at church on April 30 to carpool.

Easter Sunday On April 16, our Sunday School classes will be making Easter crafts,

egg hunting and celebrating Jesus’s resurrection during the 9 AM

service. We could use middle school and high school student help,

and parents are always welcome. We hope you’ll join us for a fun-

filled morning!

April Sunday School Themes This month in Sunday School, our unit from the Deep Blue curricu-

lum is called “Hosanna!” We hope you’ll join us!

“Cock-a-doodle-doo!”

“Hosanna!”

“Alleluia!”

“Come to Breakfast!”

“Feed My Sheep!”

Our Preschool and K-2 Classes need volunteers this month! Please

sign up to be a teacher or a helper on the schedule found on the

Children & Youth bulletin board in the narthex or on the online

calendar.

Children’s Mission Project Habitat for Humanity Lent Calendars

During Lent, children & families are encouraged to participate in

the Habitat for Humanity offering calendar. Calendars and banks

are available to pick up at the children’s check-in station at church.

Don’t forget to bring your final offering to church on April 23rd to

the 9 AM service.

Children & Youth Family Volunteer Opportunity

On Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, Madison's Parks Division is look-

ing for volunteers to help clean up local parks. We can help too!

From 10 AM-12 PM, volunteers are needed at nearby Hoyt Park. Is

your family interested? If so, we can carpool from Bethany and

volunteer together. Register at Earth Day Challenge

(cityofmadison.com/parks/events/earthdayChallenge.cfm) and let

Katie Chapdelaine know to coordinate.

Vacation Summer School VSS this summer will use the "Maker Fun Factory" curriculum by

Group Publishing. Join us for some science, inventions, and art as

we creatively explore just who God is and what He wants for us.

See you in June!

CALLED CHURCH CONFERENCE

On February 19, 2017 members of Betha-

ny voted to recommend Claire Mather as a

candidate for ordained ministry. Claire,

daughter of Pastor Brad Mather, grew up in

Bethany and will graduate from Princeton

Seminary this Spring.

Racial Inequity Follow Up….

As Bethany continues to explore its role in addressing issues of racial inequity, a small group of members is planning to worship at Foun-

tain of Life Church on Sunday morning, April 9. This is in response to an invitation from Patrick Yates of that congregation, who spoke at a

forum at Bethany in January. If you would like to join the visiting group, contact Earl Thayer at 230-3689.
