First graders love science! We’ve had a blast learning about the practice of science. Your kids have been
investigating in teams and explaining their observations. They are identifying and recording data. If
they are asking you at home, “how do you know?”, it’s all part of the science process!
Fabulous First Grade News!

These students scored a

Parents and Students,
We have had an amazing start to the 2019-20 school year. We will continue to focus on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and School Safe-
ty while still maintaining high academic standards. Our SEL programs include our Kindness Ambassadors, counselor check-in program
for new students, Buddy Benches, monthly SEL videos, and a continued focus on “Grit.” We continue to maintain safety features such as
exterior fencing around the perimeter of our student campus area, a full-time Youth Relations Bureau Deputy (Cpl. Vila), monthly safety
drills, and over 20 video cameras strategically placed around campus. All entrance gates are supervised before and after school to con-
tinue security throughout the operational day. Parents are always expected to enter the building through the front office and show
identification. I have been so impressed with the cooperative nature of our entire community to help make our school safe. Our office
staff members, Mrs. Williams, Mrs. Arroyo, Mrs. Beebe, and Mrs. Yates, are to be commended for their commitment to school safety
and enforcing security procedures when visitors come to the front door. This process has been smooth due to their communication skills
and solid decision making. Our teachers have also done an incredible job in classrooms to start the year. Students are engaged and fo-
cused and this is evident during my regular classroom visits. I remain proud of our entire school family and know that this will be the
best year ever!

Marvelous Media Matters Ms. Cast leberry & Mrs . Cox, Your Friendly Media Team
The OES Book Fair is Coming...October 21-25
The media center will have a Book Fair! We will have books that will appeal to everyone! Sun-shine State Books will be for sale along with great books for everyone from early readers to adults! Help OES buy more terrific books for our OES Chiefs to check out at the media center!
We have a very child friendly media center at OES. Students visit the media center to select books on their independent read-ing level. During the first few weeks of school, students take an reading inventory assessment to learn their independent reading level which correlates to a color. Students select & read the books independently and take “Reading Counts” tests on the computer in their classroom. If they score 70% or higher, they earn points according to the level of the book. Dog tags are awarded begin-ning with 5, 10, 25, 50 and continue with increments of 25. The program encourages OES Chiefs to increase the amount of time they spend reading independently. As you can see, this program really motivates our Chiefs to READ!
Dog Tag Program Increases Amount of Independent Reading at OES!
The year before we started the dog tag program, our students read 765,000 words independently. That number has increased greatly over the past 10 years! Last year, OES chiefs read 198,000,000 words independently! We are confident, with parent’s encouragement, our students will continue to read more and increase their reading stamina!
Enjoyable and Amazing Academic Accomplishment!
During the first 16 days of school this year, OES Chiefs read and passed the test (70%+) for 1,953 books! Our Chiefs have read 16,203,383 words in the first 16 school days! That means our Chiefs are reading over 1,000,000 words per day independently! We are so proud of this amazing accomplishment! OES Chiefs, READ!
The Art Studio I am so excited to see the students once again at Osceola Elementary School. Throughout the
school year, students in ALL grade levels will work with various artistic mediums which include; crayons, markers, various
types of paints, paper sculpture, and clay. Students will bring home a portfolio at the end of the year that they will build through the
months, which enables them to see their progression as well as give you an easy way to save their work for many years.
We will do projects that bring in cross-curricular subjects such as Math, Reading, Writing, Science and Cultural History. Students
will gain experience with past and present artists and their artistic styles. Continuously through the school year, stu-
dents are learning the parts that go into a piece of art known as the 7 Elements of Art and how to properly use them in a
piece known as the 7 Principles of Design.. After students are finished with a piece of art, their piece will be photographed and shared on the
OES online gallery through Artsonia.com. If your child had permission last year, it automatically renews this year. Check out the website at
Artsonia.com and search for Osceola Elementary to see our own art gal-
lery! The 4th and 5th graders at OES have taken part in an outreach pro-
gram through the Artis-Naples Museum of Art. Ms. Jessica Wozniak &
Alyssa Hunter are the Education Coordinators at Artis-Naples, and will
assist me in bringing lessons to the students that correlate to current
exhibits at the museum. 4th graders will learn about an artist named Ste-
ven Tobin, and use clay in a very exciting way. Our 5th graders have expe-
rienced a collaborative project
by making a mural that is
themed around well-known
artist Romero Britto and is Titles
“OES LIFE”. When it is complete,
it will join the other murals in
our bus pavilion.

We Love Our Business Sponsors! Thank you!
We all know that Osceola Elementary is an amazingly special and unique school! A large part of this is due to the strong business partner-ships we have established with local businesses in our community. At the start of this school year, we were once again amazed at the willingness, generosity, and support of our local business part-ners. In a time where educators are continuously asked to do more and more with less and less, the following business partners happily stepped up and helped us kick off the 2019-2020 with generous donations which came all sorts of shapes and siz-es! All of us at OES truly thank and appreciate you! OES wouldn't be the shining star that it is without your support!
