OCTOBER 2018 MONTH OF OCTOBER September was an interesting month with our evacu- ation half way to Fort Mill then to Orlando. I hope we have all finally recuperated because we will be making up events from September and a full schedule for Octo- ber! DISPLAY CASE This month’s display features Clare Mackie’s Goldscheider Collection. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Goldscheider family produced some of the finest porcelains and ceram- ics in Vienna, Paris, and Leipzig. Owning one of their pieces was a symbol of wealth and status. But with the rise of Hitler, the Goldscheiders emigrated to the United States, bringing their artistic expertise and business savvy with them. Clare’s family had some pieces since her childhood. She loves the elegant period clothing, soft colors, lovely facial expressions and courtly gestures and hope you will too! If you would like to display a collection or items, see Suzanne in Activities! INTERNET/ART GALLERY DISPLAY This month features Art Work from Nona Story and Wendy Dixon. “Everyone is talented. You never know what talent quietly lies beneath. Until one day, a spark is ignited!”That “spark” ignited a 6-year old Nona Story during a quiet summer break. Nona’s child- hood friend, Cheryl, a victim of polio could not run and jump or enjoy outside playing. Nona’s mom, Anne Wooster, had the idea to turn indoor play into something magical and imaginative. She patiently taught the 6-year olds, Nona and Cheryl, how to embroider. That passion for creating has never been extinguished and is represented in the embroidery and counted cross-stitch that is on display. “Samplers” from Colonial Days became a favorite of Nona’s. “Young girls would cross- stitch ‘samplers’ as an exercise to show they knew their alphabet and numbers.” Wendy Dixon has studied art in England, So. Africa, India and United States. Her first art studies be- gan at the Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art in London. When she returned to the US, she continued her studies at Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC. Here she learned the technique of Silverpoint. She is also proficient in Watercolor, Wood Cut Print, Pastel and Pencil. 2 The Cypress of Hilton Head

Off the Tee by Estelle Roberts The Golf and Weather Gods were indeed good to the participants of the September 8th Second Saturday Golf. The 16 players divided nicely into four 4-somes and we enjoyed both a nice cloud cover and slight breeze. We had 2 new participants: Evelyn Phillips and Judy Rizza. The latter’s debut was memorable as she was a member of the winning tea with Bill Dix, George Carmody and Estelle Roberts. They had as even par score of 33 achieved with no bogies and no birdies. Closest to the Pin were Gloria Rohr and Lou Mahoney.

Good time was had by all! Come and join us!

    Liberal Democratic Order in CrisisFriday

    October 5Depart at 9:15am

DEMOCRACY is going through its worst crisis since the 1930s. In recent years, as leading

authoritarian countries such as China, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela have become emboldened within the global arena, challenging

the liberal international political order, the advanced democracies have retreated rather than

responding to this threat. While some analysts draw upon this evidence to argue that the world

has entered a “democratic recession,” others dispute that interpretation, emphasizing instead

democracy’s success in maintaining the huge gains it made during the last quarter of the twentieth

    century.

New Books in the Library for October

“The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak The extraordinary #1 “New York Times” bestseller that will be in movie theaters on November 15, 2013, Markus Zusak’s unforgettable story is about the ability of books to feed the soul. It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will become busier still. Liesel Meminger is a foster girl living outside of Munich, who scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist-books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors

during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement. In superbly crafted writing that burns with intensity, award-winning author Markus Zusak, author of “I Am the Messenger, “ has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time.

“Educated “ by Tar WestoverTara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches and sleeping with her “head-for-the-hills” bag. In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged metal in her father’s junkyard. Her father distrusted the medical establishment, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. The family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education,

and no one to intervene when an older brother became violent. When another brother got himself into college and came back with news of the world beyond the mountain, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. She taught herself enough mathematics, grammar, and science to take the ACT and was admitted to Brigham Young University. There, she studied psychology, politics, philosophy, and history, learning for the first time about pivotal world events like the Holocaust and the Civil Rights Movement. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University. Only then would she wonder if she’d traveled too far, if there was still a way home.

**These books are in large print.

While some analysts draw upon this evidence to argue that the world

has entered a “democratic recession,” others dispute that interpretation, emphasizing instead

democracy’s success in maintaining the huge gains it made during the last quarter of the twentieth

    century.

    Employee of the Month

August - Cindy BinkleyCindy has been at The Cypress since August 24, 2016. She is one of the schedulers for home health. We appreciate her working extra time after a very full week to make sure payroll was completed timely and accurately. She is always trying to accommodate both members and staff and gives whatever she is working on her full at-tention. While trying to schedule someone or talk to someone on the phone, her phone continues to ring and people continue to stop in. She treats everyone with dignity, respect and above all patience. She is very friendly to new employees and mem-bers and tries to help them get acclimated. She very much exemplifies our Extraordinary Impressions!
