    BUTTERCUP’S BEGINNINGS MONTH ONE • WEEK 2

A clef sign is used at the beginning of Buttercup’s staff.

The treble or G clef sign gives the name G to the second line of the staff by making a circle around it.

Help Buttercup trace the treble clef signs. Begin at the bottom and follow the symbol.

High pitches sung by children are written on the treble clef staff.

MONTH ONE • WEEK 3GOD’S TIME

Directions: In showing your devotion to God, you must learn that time and talents are not your own. These gifts are from God so that you can use them to serve Him. Christians are told to “redeem the time” (to use their time wisely) as they serve God. Look at the pictures on the clock below. Color the ones that show a wise use of time. Cross out the pictures that show an unwise use of time.

Solve the puzzle below, using the word bank, your Bible, and help from your captain during today’s lesson.

    Trace the flat signs below.

In our song this month, “The Army of the Lord,” see measure 46. Notice that a is flat. There is a flat sign before the note. Listen as your Captain plays measures 45 and 46 with and without the flat—so you can hear the difference. Then, sing it correctly.

    A.

    B.

    C. A Lone Stranger Lesson

A flat sign before a note tells you to sing or play that note one half-step lower. If you are playing a keyboard instrument, you should play the next key to the left of the note given. See the example below.

Directions: Color the picture below. Let it remind you that your God never leads you into defeat! He enables you to stand against your enemy and to win every battle. Remember however, that you’re required to put on the entire armor that God has provided in order to defeat Satan’s attacks.

“I am marching in the army,

    the army of the Lord.

God has given me His armor

    and given me His sword.

MONTH THREE • WEEK 1SHINING SHARPS

    Trace the sharp signs below.

In the “Patch Club Song” on page 9 of this Sailor Log, notice that the f is sharp in measure 34. Listen to the musical phrase in measures 33 and 34 to hear how the f sounds when it is raised a half-step and how it sounds when it is a natural f. Listen to the phrase both ways. Your Captain or leader can play the melody for you. You may sing the phrase.

    A.

    B.

    C.

Princess and Sissy rise and shine to glistening musical sharps. A sharp sign before a note tells you to sing or play that note one half-step higher. If you are playing a keyboard instrument, you should play the next key to the right of the note given. See the example below.

    YIPPY-I-O-KY-AY! ACCIDENTALS

    Trace the natural signs below.

In your music to “The Patch Club Song” found on page 9 of this book, see measures 8 and 16. Notice that e is usually flat. The e in measures 8 and 16 are played or sung as natural. Your Captain or leader will play these phrases for you. Sing stanza one of “The Club Song” with the natural notes.

    A.

    B.

    C.

A natural sign cancels a sharp or a flat sign. A natural sign before a note tells you to sing the natural tone. If you are playing a keyboard instrument, you will play the natural (white) key. See the examples given below.

A sharp show-down rule to remember:

When you see a sharp in front of a note, sing or play it a half-step higher. The note with a sharp sounds just a little higher than the note without a sharp. Sharp notes are usually between two letter name notes—for instance, F sharp is located between F and G. On keyboard instruments, sharp notes are often black keys.

    Have fun playing tic-tac-toe.
