Send school activities to be included in your active school file.

Complete shut down lists and other activities and send to SERT via e-mail, PONY or fax.

Include more items in your active school file and increase your school score – (Hint: SERT Award)

At or before 3:00 pm each day, begin shutdown process. Turn off lights, plug loads or systems which are not in use.

BSM is responsible for ensuring that this important task is completed each day.

BSM may assign this task to BSAM to complete while BSAM checks the building.

3:00 pm

Time to check the building and to make sure that hallway and classroom lights are turned off.

3:30 PM

Remember to shut down your portables.

If your school is not controlled by EMS, then you will begin chiller shut down process.

This can be done by physically observing the chiller at your school.

Chiller Drop

Represents

PLM

shutdown

Call EMS immediately at the PLM hotline number: 301-252-3533

Every school should have a posted sheet with the dates, times for PLM and this phone number.

Some schools are not controlled by EMS. If your school does not have EMS, then your chiller must be manually shut down by building service staff.

Your maintenance depot HVAC shop can train you and your team on how to manually shut down your chiller.

Please contact the SERT program 240-314-1090 if you have any questions. We are here to help you.

Most new schools have ground source heating and cooling system. No chillers.

You only need to focus on shutting down the lights and other plug loads not in use.

Provide your name, name of your school and inform EMS that your chiller is still ON. Leave a voicemail if you do not get to speak to a live person. Please leave your name, schools name, date and time of your call.

EMS will remotely shut down the chiller. Your school will receive a credit in the active school file when you call. (hint: award)

If your school’s chiller is ON after 4:00 pm

Call PLM hotline: 301-252-3533

Be part of the solution to our problem.

Its easy to see and understand how you can make a difference

Plug Loads

Heating & Cooling

One third (1/3): HVAC (Heating and cooling)

One third (1/3): Lighting

One third (1/3): Plug-loads (Anything that plugs into an electrical outlet)

Communication is key!

Make sure your team is on the same page.

Use your SERT facilitator as a resource for contest information, energy data, procedures, etc.

PLM is a big deal! If we save a lot of energy during the summer and win a SERT award, it goes directly to our supply account.

Keep lights off until the teachers show up. Keep unoccupied areas off throughout the day.

Set up bins for lunch in a way that works at your school.

Clean bins after lunch.

Establish a routine:

Check loop temperature and other HVAC essentials first thing in the morning. If there are any issues, contact the necessary people (EMS, Depot, etc.).

Save energy by following the shutdowns and using the lights only when needed.

The energy used by the chiller is significant, call if the chiller is still running at 4:00 pm.

In this example, Thurgood Marshall ES saved an average of 5% over the baseline year.

What can you do to save energy?

Turn off the lights in the hallways when there is enough natural light. In this example, only the emergency lights are on.

Each and every day after cleaning each area/rooms, turn off light to save energy and the life of the bulbs. During PLM these savings are even more important and add up to even more savings.

Keep track of the chiller, both as a regular responsibility but also to be able to inform EMS and Maintenance for energy related issues.

Remove a bulb to lower light levels and save energy

Work with the SERT office to identify de-lamping opportunities

(Many hallways and computer labs can be de-lamped)

Older dorm style refrigerators use the same (or more) amount of electricity as a full size Energy Star model.

Consolidate and use SERT awards to purchase Energy Star refrigerators and receive energy saving lunch bags in exchange.

Computers

Printers

Mini Refrigerators

Heaters

Keep all windows and doors closed when heating or cooling system is on.

Infiltration in one room or area can affect temperature in other areas of the building.

Control your lighting Have BS staff turn off lights when there aren’t activities in the area at

night.

Have lights off until teachers enter the building.

Leave lights off in APR, gym, and library until needed.

Create SERT Action Plan Work on your Action Plan with the

SERT team

After it’s made, present the plan to staff/students

Try to incorporate the students in the recycling process as much as possible (dumping the small classroom bins into big hallway bins)

Set-up a system in the cafeteria so that black food trays, plastic milk containers, and paper trays can be recycled.

Have kids enter poster contest.

Encourage Teamwork

Review with staff on what can/can’t be recycled at the beginning of the school year.

Incorporate students into the recycling process.

Have BS staff turn off lights in rooms.

Open blinds utilize natural daylight during heating season; tilt the blinds up or shut the blinds during cooling season.

Have BS team sweep the building every night to turn off lights and unnecessary power sources.

Schedule your cleaning around PLM (3-5 p.m.) and assign a building “sweeper.”

No summer break for recycling.

Recycling happens 24/7, 365 days.

Ensure recycling bins are available for:

ICB use

ELO, BELL, ESY, Head Start programs

Linkages to Learning

Summer lunch and breakfast schools

Summer School

Camps

Administrative offices, and etc.

Is your school participating in the MCPS Summer Meals Program?

Please place recycling bins along with the trash bins in any areas in

which food will be served and empty the bins as frequently as

needed.

Remember, there is no summer break for recycling!

GOT PAPER? Contest continues through June 30th.

Recycling pick up schedule will be the same for summer break.

Make sure dumpsters are accessible and not blocked.

Continue to bring recyclables to the dumpster daily to avoid overflow situations, especially before school reopens.

Call SERT if you need an extra pick up (240) 314-1090.

Keep dumpsters locked to avoid contamination by construction workers or the community.

When moving bins during summer cleaning please remember to replace them in the same location as soon as possible.

Take an inventory of damaged recycling bins, place an order in MAXIMO for replacement bins using “grounds” code.

Place MAXIMO orders for any extra bins, labels, or posters.

Recycling is something that we take care of throughout the year. The new tray is easy to stack and recycle. Keeping the dumpsters locked keeps local contractors and the community from using the recycling dumpsters for their trash!

If plastic bags are used to carry out recycle materials, remind your staff to dump the material out and keep the bags out of the dumpster.

Recycle cleaning chemical containers (must be empty). Place them in bottles/cans dumpster. REMOVE LIDS on 5 gallon buckets.

Yard waste: Set aside in designated area and request for a special pick-up. Do not place yard waste in trash bags.

Energy Conservation

Turn lights on only when needed in hallways, classroom and offices.

Be sure computers, printers, refrigerators* and other plugged in items are turned off .

When necessary, turn on HVAC system only in zones that are needed.

Cold water cleaning

*Personal refrigerators not Food Service units

Recycling

Recycling happens 24/7 –365 days a year.

No summer break for recycling.

Make sure bins are available for all building users, even in the summer months.

You and your staff play an important role.

PLM runs from June 22 through August 22.

Chiller shut down occurs between 3:30 PM and 4 PM each day.

At 3:00 pm Turn off lights, equipment, and plug loads

Recycling bins should be out and available throughout the summer for ICB use, administrative offices and summer programs.

Summer SERT Awards: Energy, Recycling, and Peak Load Management (PLM).

The SERT team is here to help you succeed. Tell us how we can help you.
