2018 4H TEEN SUMMIT For Youth in Grades 6-8

The greatest benefits young people receive from 4-H are confi-

dence and knowledge to be good communicators and better lead-ers. 4-H Summit works to strengthen these qualities through

hands-on workshops, guest speakers, seminars, group living, rec-

reation & recognition. During the Kentucky 4-H Summit, youth will

be able to take four fun and educational workshops. Youth in

grades 6-8 can build their lead- ership, citizenship and communica-

tions skills at the KY Leader- ship Center in Jabez, KY on March 8,

9, & 10, 2018. Each year a delegation of middle school-aged

teens travel to Jabez to represent Montgomery County at the Summit. Now is the time to regis-

ter for the Summit. If interested, contact me at the Montgomery County Extension Office to re-

Kentucky 4-H Written Communications Contest!

Do you have a passion for writing? Have you ever written a poem or a song? If so, here’s an opportunity to

share your talents by participating in the Kentucky 4-H Written Communications Contest! The categories

include: Songwriting; Poetry which requires a 3-line minimum up to a 25-line maximum; “What 4-H Means

to Me” Essay with a 500-word minimum; Original Monologue; Press Release with a maximum 1,000-word

limit; and Public Service Announcement. Each category will have a junior and senior age division. In 4-H,

a Junior is any member age 9-13. In 4-H, a Senior is any member age 14-19. The participant’s age on Jan.

1st will determine their age division. Each writing piece must be original, meaning you do your own work

and create your own written entry. If there is a question, the participant will be disqualified. A statement of

authenticity must be completed and attached to entry.

All entries are to be on 8.5" x 11" paper, with the entrant's class, name, and county on a cover page and last

name typed on every page. Please include scoring guide, and statement of authenticity at the back of the

piece. Entries are to be double-spaced; typed with Calibri font size 12; and on white paper. Songs may be

single-spaced within verses, chorus and bridge and double spaced between each of these.

Winners will be invited to showcase at the Kentucky State Fair “Clover Café.” Date to be announced at a

later date. The county deadline for submitting an entry is Friday, February 24, 2018 to the Montgomery

County Extension Service office. For further details about the contest and resources to help you understand

4-H STEP UP TO LEADERSHIP

“Assess Myself”

7th PERIOD—Mr. Haskins’ Class The meeting started with the call to order then Vice President Zach

called Noah and Brady up to lead the pledges. A quote from Charles

Dickens was read. We continued talking about Charles Dickens. Then

the secretary called the roll and read the minutes from the last meeting.

Announcements from the reporter included meeting schedule for 4-H

This Land Leadership Club, 4-H Saddle Club, 4-H Livestock Club, 4-H

Shooting Sports, and 4-H Camp 2018.

The activities leaders introduced the program which was on leadership

and relationship building. We then moved to a building activity involv-

ing cup stacking and then the president adjourned the meeting.

5th PERIOD—Mr. Haskins’ Class On December 14, 2017 President Will and the class voted on Vice Presi-

dent Sandra Potts, the Secretary Asia Dotson and the Reporter Travis

Stamper. We said both pledges—4-H Pledge and the Pledge of Alle-

giance, then we read and talked about Charles Dickens. The secretary

called the rolland everyone had to answer by saying their favorite ani-

mal. The Reporter Travis Stamper read the club announcements to the

class. Mr. Comer was talking about team work and trust. Then we did

an activity with stacking and moving cups.

4th PERIOD—Mr. Haskins’ Class We elected officers today. We elected Bianca as Secretary, Aron is

President, Alex is Vice President. We said the Pledge of Allegiance to

the Flag of the United States of America and to the 4-H Flag. Callie

read a poem about lightening the burden of another. We read about

Charles Dickens who wrote the story “A Christmas Carol” and discussed

his life and how he started working when he was real young. The secre-

tary took attendance and we played an building activity with cups.

Montgomery County Shooting Sports

The Montgomery County 4-H Shooting Sports Team was proud to welcome guest speaker Jailer Eric Jones and

two of his correctional officers to our November meeting. He talked to us about running the jail and demon-

strated their weapons of compliance. Also, we had the pleasure of watching their dog Enzo in a demonstration.

Thank you, Eric and Officers, for taking your time with us!

Officers for 2017-2018 were installed to their positions at our November meeting. As seen in the
