39.4% of Filipinos prefer to place their savings in the

    bank.

38.8% of Filipinos prefer to keep their savings at home.

    These options place

    Filipinos at a

    disadvantage.

Where do you put your hard-earned money?

    4

Option 1: Keep the savings at homeWhat are the risks of keeping savings at home, and why are you at a disadvantage?

Loss (due to theft/calamity)Unlike banks that insure your deposits up to

Php500,000, your money will not be replaced

when someone steals them or if you get hit by

    a calamity (e.g. flood).

Decline in Purchasing PowerYour money does not earn interest when you

just keep it at home. Over the long run, your

moneys value will decline because of inflation.

Think about the increasing prices of goods.

Years ago an item may just cost Php100, but

due to inflation, the item could cost about

    Php120 already today.

    2. Philippine average inflation rate from January 2003 to March 2014, NSCB

Option 2: Deposit in the bankMoney placed in the bank should only be for immediate needs and short-term goals.

What are the risks of keeping long-term savings in the bank, and why are you at a disadvantage?

Declining Interest RatesTop banks now offer only 1.375% or

less annually in their time deposit

accounts and less than 0.25% in their

    savings accounts.1 The low returns

make it longer for you to realize your

    dreams.

1 Savings Rates are not at Par with Inflation RatePrices of goods are increasing by

5.0%2 while your money is only

earning less than 1.375% in banks.

You continue to lose value of your

    money.

2 Asset-Liability MismatchLong-term investments normally provide returns higher than short-term

investments. While you have the option to

roll-over your bank deposits, you may not

be able to lock in your returns. Hence,

your returns will not be maximized

    because of the asset-liability mismatch.
