What to Look for in Today’s Matches by Matt Lombardi 11:00: Nouran Gohar (Egypt, age 21, rank 8) vs. Annie Au (Hong Kong, age 29, rank 12). Gohar is the most consistently up-tempo player in women’s squash, while Au specializes in deceptive lobs and drops. The result should be a classic game of cat-and-mouse, with the player who can dictate the pace coming out the winner. 11:45: Camille Serme (France, age 29, rank 5) vs. Victoria Lust (England, age 29, rank 15). There’s a scrappy tenacity to Lust’s game—she has a knack for hanging on in points long enough to force an opponent error. Serme, the 2017 ToC champ, is likely to set the pace high and hunt the volley in order to keep Lust on the run. 12:30: Raneem El Welily (Egypt, age 30, rank 1) vs. Joshna Chinappa (India, age 32, rank 14). Chinappa loves to play high-risk shots and is prone to running hot and cold. El Welily can be similarly streaky, but greater patience and greater precision have taken her to the no. 1 ranking in the world. 2:30: Joelle King (New Zealand, age 30, rank 4) vs. Nicol David (Malaysia, age 35, rank 13). King is coming off her first major tournament title, at November’s Hong Kong Open, but she has a career PSA record of 1-10 against the eight-time world champion David, including a loss in the second round of last year’s ToC. 3:15: Nour El Tayeb (Egypt, age 25, rank 3) vs. Amanda Sobhy (U.S., age 25, rank 11). Sobhy’s biggest win since returning last year from a ruptured Achilles heel was over El Tayeb in the U.S. Open, where she flustered the high-energy Egyptian with lobs. If Sobhy tries the strategy again, expect El Tayeb to be ready for it. 5:00: Laura Massaro (England, age 35, rank 7) vs. Salma Hany (Egypt, age 22, rank 16). The veteran Massaro likes to work rallies to her advantage before going in for the kill, while Hany is a ball of energy who looks to end points at the first opportunity. Don’t be surprised if Hany takes an early lead and Massaro fights back. 5:45: Mohamed ElShorbagy (Egypt, age 28, rank 1) vs. Diego Elias (Peru, age 22, rank 11). These two exceptional athletes have distinctly different styles. ElShorbagy plays at fast clip and with a fiery attitude. Elias likes to keep his cool, varying the pace and smoothly covering the court as well as anyone in game. 7:30: Nour El Sherbini (Egypt, age 23, rank 2) vs. Olivia Blatchford Clyne (U.S., age 25, rank 19). When she has momentum, defending ToC champion El Sherbini can clinically dismantle almost any opponent. For local hero Blatchford Clyne to score the upset, she’ll need to maintain her attacking style while playing error-free squash. 8:15: Simon Rösner (Germany, age 31, rank 3) vs. Karim Abdel Gawad (Egypt, age 27, rank 5). The powerful German has yet to drop a game in his ToC title defense, but he faces a major test against Gawad, the 2017 ToC champ and former world no. 1, who’s coming off a brilliant win at December’s Black Ball Open in Cairo. 9:00: Alison Waters (England, age 34, rank 9) vs. Tesni Evans (Wales, age 26, rank 10). Both players are tough competitors who aren’t shy about attacking to the front of the court. Evans got one of the biggest wins of her career last year against Waters in the final of the British Nationals. Thursday JANUARY 17, 2019 11AM SESSION [6] Nouran Gohar (EGY) v.
