POTD Answer

Ms. Tyler bought 4 types of crayons. She bought 30 of each kind. She also purchased some markers, but bought 5 times as many markers as crayons (this means the amount of markers is greater!!). How many markers did Ms. Tyler buy?

4 types of crayons x 30 each = 120 total crayons

Crayons x 5 = markers so,

120 total crayons x 5 = 600 markers

Multiplication as Comparisons

• Define the following terms– Factor– Product

• Multiplicative Comparison is a situation in which one quantity is multiplied by a specified number to get another quantity.– compares two quantities by showing that one quantity is a specified

number of times larger or smaller than the other • It helps to remember that the equal sign really means "is the same

as."– EX: 4 groups of 7

• 4 x 7 is the same as 28.• 28 is the same as 4 x 7. • 28 is the same as 4 sets of 7.• 28 is 4 times as many as 7.

Page 4: Monday, March 31, 2014

Let’s Practice • 64 is eight times as many as...• 42 is six times as many as...• 35 is five times as many as...• 99 is nine times as many as... • 8 x 9 = 72

72 = 8 x 972 is 8 times as many as 972 is 9 times as many as 8

• 3 x 6 = 18 2 x 5 = 10 6 x 4 = 24 3 x 7 = 21 • 4 x 5 = 20 6 x 7 = 42 7 x 8 = 56 9 x 4 = 36

POTD Answer

JABIZ town can hold 300 students at a time. The table below shows the attendance for the last 5 days. If JABIZ town had been at max capacity, how many more people would have attended in the 5-day period?

Day Attendance How many more per day

1 213 872 143 1573 98 2024 279 215 256 44total 989 511

1st way.5 days x 300 max= 1500 total people.1500 max - 989 actual = 511 more people

2nd wayFind the difference each day from 300 max and add the differences together.

87+157+202+21+44= 511 more people
