CASSE TEAM CELEBRATES CLASSIC EMPIRE COMEBACKBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

Even as he sat in the eye of the storm, trainer Mark Casse didn't panic.Instead of listening to outside noise, Casse heeded

what his champion charge was telling him. When all was said and done in the $1 million Arkansas Derby (G1) April 15, the Hall of Fame finalist's instincts were proven accurate.

Before jumping on a plane to celebrate Easter Sunday with his family, Casse reflected April 16 on the redemption run John Oxley's Classic Empire uncorked in Oaklawn Park's signature prep race. Prevailing by half a length in his first start since February, the son of Pioneerof the Nile regained a sizable portion of respect that had waned during his troubled winter and spring.

It took a village to get Classic Empire ready for the Arkansas Derby. After finishing a non-threatening third in the Lambholm South Holy Bull Stakes (G2) in his seasonal bow Feb. 4, the bay colt was found to have a foot abscess—something Casse said explained why the Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) winner was extremely agitated before that dull outing.

When Classic Empire missed training time due to a couple of aborted works, Casse made the call to change up his environment and shifted the multiple grade 1 winner to Winding Oaks Farm in Ocala to try and get him together for a final prep race.

"He's good, he's great this morning," Casse said Sunday. "What I feel good about is we were up front. We were telling everyone the truth of what was going on and so many people were like 'There is no way he will be ready.' But the key to it all is he's a really, really, really good horse. And really, really good horses can overcome a lot of things. And he was a gentleman yesterday.

"We said all along how smart he is and now more than ever, I know what happened at Gulfstream was because of his foot because he was an entirely different horse yesterday. He never turned a hair. And there was plenty of reasons for him to turn hairs."

Casse was quick to credit the team effort behind Classic Empire's return to the forefront on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, from his farm manager Mitch Downs to exercise rider Martin Rivera. Assistant trainer

David Carroll, however, was just as apt to throw the praise toward the nine-time Sovereign Award-winning conditioner.

"It was really an unbelievable job done by the whole team. I think the change of scenery and getting back to basics was so key," Carroll said from Keeneland. "I said to Mark yesterday, it was remarkable how he was so even keel through all the trials and tribulations. He was always like 'Hey, these things happen.' I was amazed at his demeanor and I learn off him a lot, the way he handles everything.

"I was so happy for him. Obviously I was happy for Mr. Oxley and the horse, but I was really happy for Mark. Yesterday was a big win for the whole team."

Casse said Classic Empire would ship to Louisville April 17 to prepare for his run in the first leg of the Triple Crown.

"It's one of those years where all you're trying to do is get yourself in position to have a chance," Carroll said. "Yesterday, after winning the race...it's a victory in itself to be in the position to run in the Derby. Everyone was so happy and so relieved." BH

DICKINSON IN GOOD ORDER AFTER JENNY WILEY WINBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

To have an outing like the one Lexington native Kiaran McLaugh-

lin experienced at Keeneland April 15 was something that struck a poignant chord within the veteran trainer.

McLaughlin enjoyed a perfect day of racing in the Bluegrass Saturday, saddling four winners from as many starters on the Keeneland card including Coolmore Jenny Wiley Stakes (G1T) heroine Dickinson. McLaughlin's day equaled the Keeneland mark for most wins on a single day at the track and all of his winners were reported to be in good order April 16.

"It was a great day, an unbelievable day," McLaughlin said from his Keeneland barn Sunday morning. "I think we've had four wins in a day at other tracks...but to do it here is special. It's always great to come home and win, but to go 4-for-4 was amazing."

Dickinson showed she was well on her way to becoming the latest star in McLaughlin's barn. Godolphin Racing's homebred daughter of Medaglia d'Oro overcame the halting of her momentum in the stretch to get up and best multiple grade 1 winner Lady Eli by a head in a Jenny Wiley field that featured four established top-level winners.

Since switching to the turf last September, Dickinson has won five of six outings including three straight graded stakes. McLaughlin reiterated Sunday that a start in June 10 Longines Just a Game Stakes (G1T) at Belmont Park would likely be

next for his emerging turf standout."Dickinson is very special for

Godolphin," McLaughlin said. "She's a homebred and her dam (Little Belle) won a grade 1 here (2008 Ashland Stakes). She had a rough trip, and I thought she was in trouble when she got stopped and had to go around. Lady Eli had a beautiful trip and got the jump on her, but it was just a great race."

Lady Eli, making her first start since getting beat by a nose in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1T) in November, was reported to be well Sunday morning according to trainer Chad Brown, who said he would likely look for a race for her in New York next.

Trainer Graham Motion said all was good with Quidura, who ran a bang-up race to get third in the Jenny Wiley in what was her third North American start and first against grade 1 company.

Grade 1 winner Time and Motion was also none the worse for wear after finishing sixth in the Jenny Wiley. Trainer Jimmy Toner said he may add blinkers to the 4-year-

old daughter of Tapit in her next start—possibly the May 13 Beaugay Stakes (G3T) at Belmont.

"We've been toying with (adding blinkers) since she was a 2-year-old, but she won five races so you don't want to start changing things," Toner said. "But every time she runs she always gets to looking around and losing focus. Yesterday, she was sitting perfect and (jockey) Johnny (Velazquez) said he tipped her out and asked her to go and she threw her head in the air and started looking around. She just lost her focus."

David Carroll, assistant to trainer Mark Casse, said multiple grade 1 winner Catch a Glimpse came out of her eighth-place finish with no obvious excuse. They will regroup with the owners before deciding what might be next for the daughter of City Zip.

"We were quietly confident going into the race that she would run a huge race," Carroll said. "She had everything her way, the fractions were easy for her but when it came time to run, they just ran by her. But she owes nobody anything." BH

CONQUEST MO MONEY'S CONNECTIONS PONDERING DERBYBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

Trainer Miguel Hernandez thought he had the Arkansas

Derby (G1) won.Judge Lanier Racing's Conquest

Mo Money had put away seemingly every challenger after dueling on the lead through speedy fractions and looked home free in the final stages.

And then came the champion 2-year-old of 2016, flying on the outside.

"I thought we had the race, but I didn't see the one coming outside. Then I said, 'Uh oh.' I was in shock when that horse crossed the wire," Hernandez said of Classic Empire's closing victory to best Conquest Mo Money by a half-length April 15 at Oaklawn Park.

"For me, my horse won the race. He did everything, with fast fractions, and never gave it up. I'm so happy for him and for (jockey) Jorge Carreno. He rode a perfect race."

Hernandez said April 16 that the New Mexico-based son of Uncle Mo came out of the race well and that he and owner Tom McKenna will discuss whether to pay the $200,000 for a supplemental nomination to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1).

Hernandez said they will make a decision April 18. Conquest Mo Money would be 12th on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard, if he were nominated, with 60 points.

Whether they enter the Kentucky Derby won't take away Saturday's excitement, however. A former jockey who had his riding career ended in 2013 when a he sustained a severe back injury during a spill at Ruidoso Downs, Hernandez never thought he could equal the thrill of riding the winner—that was, until Saturday.

"I rode for many, many years, and I was always excited to win big races," Hernandez said. "But yesterday—that was something else."

Bred in New York by Twin Creeks Farm, Conquest Mo Money was

purchased by his current owner for $8,500 when offered at the 2016 Keeneland November sale from the Lane's End consignment for the complete dispersale of Conquest Stables. In five starts, all in 2017, he has three wins and two seconds and has earned more than $500,000.

One start prior to the Arkansas Derby, the colt was runner up in the March 26 Sunland Derby (G3), finishing 3 3/4 lengths behind Hence. Before that, he took the Mine That Bird Derby and the Riley Allison Stakes back-to-back at Sunland Park. In the Jan. 29 Riley Allison, he stalked the pace early before drawing off to win by 11 lengths. BH

KEENELAND AHEAD OF 2016 THROUGH SEVEN PROGRAMSBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

Spectacular weather and one of North America's highest purse structures that drew some of the top

horses in training combined to boost the numbers in every major statistical category for Keeneland's first seven days.

The 15-day meet began April 7 and continues through April 28.

Following the April 15 card (April 16 was a dark day because of Easter), Keeneland had recorded total attendance of 141,104, for a daily average 20,157. Through the same number of days a year ago, attendance averaged 16,965 daily on a total 118,758.

This year's total wagering of $78.5 million through seven programs represented a slight gain over the $76.4 million total at the same juncture in 2016. On-track handle this year of $9.2 million is also tracking

ahead of the $8.9 million for seven cards in 2016."Keeneland has a tremendously loyal fan base,"

said Bob Elliston, vice president of racing and sales. "When you give them beautiful blue skies and best-in-class racing, they will come out in droves. Many of the stars of racing, equine and human, have populated our race cards giving fans a product they can't miss."

On opening day, 14,301 hearty souls braved rain, drizzle, and temperatures in the mid-40s to attend races on the College Day card in which Keeneland caters to students attending colleges and universities within the state with special events including scholarship drawings.

The following day, Reddam Racing's Irap posted an upset victory in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2) and Keeneland reported attendance of 32,610, well above the 2016 figure of 20,848 on a chilly Saturday a year ago when Brody's Cause took the then-grade 1 stake.

Keeneland received a windfall from the calendar this year as Good Friday fell on Friday, April 14, and

24,114 took advantage of the holiday to attend the races. On the comparable Friday in 2016—when Easter was on March 27, before the Keeneland meet began—Keeneland reported attendance of 17,645.

On the second Saturday of the meet, again with a continuation of the outstanding spring weather in the Bluegrass, Keeneland reported attendance of 30,782—well off the 38,963 figure a year ago—for the card highlighted by the upset victory of Godolphin's Dickinson over champion Lady Eli in the grade 1 Coolmore Jenny Wiley Stakes. STATE OF HONOR, SALTY GET FIRST WORKS AT CHURCHILLBy Erin Sheat @BH_EShea

Less than 24 hours after champi-on Classic Empire crossed the

wire first in the $1 million Arkansas Derby (G1), trainer Mark Casse was overseeing approximately 20 of his runners put in their first works at Churchill Downs April 16.

Among the group were Xpressbet Florida Derby (G1) runner up State of Honor and Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) winner Salty, who are pointing toward the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) May 6 and the Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) May 5, respectively.

"They were both good. Today was just kind of an easy breeze since they just ran, they'll both do a little more next week," Casse said, adding that both sophomores took to Churchill's track well.

"Salty worked in company (with graded stakes placed Mississippi Delta). State of Honor worked by himself, and we were just trying to get him to settle down a little bit, trying to get him relaxed—he's going to have to do that to run a 1 1/4 miles."

The Canadian-bred To Honor and Serve colt breezed a half mile in :49.80 under exercise rider E.J. Bowler, with splits in :12 and :24 2/5 and a gallop out for five furlongs in 1:02. Conrad Farm's homebred has hit the board in all four starts this year, including

a second in the Lambhom South Tampa Bay Derby (G2) and a third in the Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3).

Gary Barber, Baccari Racing, and Chester Prince's Salty was credited with a half-mile breeze in :48.40, with splits of :12 1/5 and :24 2/5 before galloping out to five furlongs in 1:01. The Quality Road filly has won two of her three total starts and was an impressive 4 1/4-length winner in the Gulfstream Park Oaks in her last start.

Also on the Churchill worktab Sunday for Casse was John Oxley's grade 1 winner Noble Bird. The 6-year-old son of Birdstone breezed four furlongs in :49 2/5 and, according to his trainer, will point to the May 5 Alysheba Stakes (G2) at 1 1/16 miles.

"As usual, (Noble Bird) works good but we just never know

what Noble Bird we're going to see," Casse said of the horse who finished off the board in both of his starts this year. "If things keep going (well), we'll probably run him in the Alysheba."

Live Oak Plantation's grade 1 winner World Approval also stretched his legs Sunday morning, going four furlongs in :51 4/5. The 5-year-old Northern Afleet gelding won his only start this year, the EG Vodka Turf Classic Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs April 2. Casse said he will train up to the May 6 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes (G1).

Xpressbet Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) fifth place finisher Lookin for Eight clocked :48 2/5 for four furlongs Sunday. The Lookin At Lucky colt will be aimed toward the May 5 Pat Day Mile Presented by LG&E and KU (G3). BH

ARISTOCRATIC SPEEDS TO SAN PEDRO VICTORYBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

Back home at Santa Anita Park, Kaleem Shah's Aris-tocratic shrugged off a poor off-the-board finish at

Oaklawn Park last time out to score impressively in the $75,000 San Pedro Stakes April 16.

Hustled out of the gate by jockey Rafael Bejarano, the 3-year-old Malibu Moon colt trained by Doug O'Neill set the pace, took pressure from three horses to his outside, and easily held off a late charge by favored Bobby Abu Dhabi to win by 4 1/2 lengths.

The win followed a sixth-place run in the Gazebo Stakes March 4 at Oaklawn, where Aristocratic finished 16 1/4 lengths behind winner Rockshaw.

"After that race at Oaklawn, where he acted up at the gate, the jock said that when he got in behind horses, he lost his mind," O'Neill said. "I want to thank (Santa

Anita starter Jay Slender) and his crew, because we took him to the gate here quite a bit for schooling and it paid off."

On Sunday Aristocratic set fractions of :21.67 and :44.84, then finished off the six furlongs in 1:10.09. Bobby Abu Dhabi raced 4 1/4 lengths off the lead, last in the five-horse field in the backstretch, but his wide move never seriously challenged Aristocratic, who extended his margin by two lengths in the final furlong.

"I knew there was a lot of speed in the race, but this horse likes to be on the lead and in control," Bejarano said. "So there was no choice for me. I tried to get him to relax without taking too much hold of him and get him comfortable. At the top of the stretch, I knew I had plenty left."

Big League came in third, four lengths behind Bobby Abu Dhabi, and was followed by Rebel War, and Taxman's Quest, to complete the order of finish.

Aristocratic, who broke his maiden Feb. 11 at Santa Anita after two second-place runs to start his career, he

now has a 2-2-0 record from five starts with $99,950 in earnings. He was a $450,000 purchase out of the Ocala Breeders' Sale Co.'s March sale of 2-year-olds in training in 2016. The colt was bred in Kentucky by Castleton Lyons and Kilboy Estate, out of the Speightstown mare Ask Me When. BH

AL AIN TAKES FIRST LEG OF JAPAN'S TRIPLE CROWNBy Mary Reedert @BH_MReeder

Much of Japan anticipated this year’s Satsuki Sho (Japanese Two Thousand Guineas, G1) April 16, with

Fan Dii Na, an undefeated daughter of Deep Impact, attempting to become the first filly to win the first leg of their 3-year-old Triple Crown since Hide Hikari in 1948.

However, sent off as the favorite, Fan Dii Na was unable to maintain the lead she briefly gained exiting the turn for home. In the final strides, Al Ain prevailed by a neck over Persian Knight in the 2,000-meter (almost 1 1/4-mile) event at Nakayama Racecourse.

Al Ain raced just off the pace next to Fan Dii Na in fourth and fifth throughout, and only began his move after the filly geared up at the top of the final turn. While she went four wide to find the lead, the son of Deep Impact stayed close and was able to move past as she faded to finish seventh in the field of 18.

Danburite got up to finish third. Final time for the

distance was a race record 1:57.8.Trained by Yasutoshi Ikee for Sunday Racing Co., Al

Ain has only one loss from five starts, including a win one start back in the Mainichi Hai (G3) March 25.

The colt, bred by Northern Farm in Japan, is out of the 2010 champion female sprinter Dubai Majesty (Essence of Dubai). BH

ANALYSISSECOND-CROP SIRES MAKING THE GRADEBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Six stallions among the leading North American sec-ond-crop sires are represented by two or more black-

type stakes winners since the start of the year. Among these, BloodHorse MarketWatch was interested in progeny who performed the best so far in graded stakes company.

The six sires include five who also have runners that won or placed in a graded stakes and three of the five have runners who won or placed in two or more graded stakes.

Lane's End's Union Rags currently leads 2017 by graded stakes performers. The 8-year-old son of Dixie Union—Tempo, by Gone West, has two graded stakes winners and one graded stakes-placed winner. He has one other 2017 black-type winner in Union Strike, who became a grade 1 winner last year.

Paradise Woods is Union Rags' newest grade 1 winner—the filly took the April 8 Santa Anita Oaks for owners Steven Sarkowsky and Marty and Pam Wygod. Paradise Woods is out of Wild Forest (Forest Wildcat) and was bred by Sarkowsky's father, Herman. Although she did not start at 2, she now has a 2-1-0 record in three starts.

Union Rags' other graded stakes winner is Tequilita, out of Sangrita (Mr. Greeley), who won the Forward Gal Stakes (G2) for owner/breeder Dorothy Matz. Patch is Union Rags' graded stakes-placed winner who finished second in the TwinSpires.com Louisiana Derby (G2) for owner/breeder Calumet Farm in just his third start.

The only other second-crop sire with a grade 1 winner so far this year is WinStar Farms' Bodemeister, the sire of Xpressbet Florida Derby (G1) winner Always Dreaming. The colt out of Above Perfection (In Excess) was bred by Santa Rosa Partners and is owned by Brooklyn Boyz Stables, Teresa Viola Racing Stables, and West Point Thoroughbreds.

Bodemeister, an 8-year-old son of Empire Maker—Untouched Talent (Storm Cat), is also represented by grade 3-placed winner American Anthem, who was second in the Sham Stakes (G3) for owners China Horse Club, Head of Plains Partners, and SF Racing. Bodemeister's other black-type winner for the year is O Dionysus, who won the Miracle Wood Stakes. He won a stakes at 2 as well.

Hill 'n' Dale Farms' Maclean's Music is the third sire with a couple of graded stakes horses in addition two black-type winners. A 9-year-old son of Distorted Humor—Forest Music (Unbridled's Song), Maclean's Music is best represented by Cloud Computing and Wicked Lick.

Cloud Computing, out of the A.P. Indy mare Quick Temper, is currently 20th on the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) leaderboard following a second in the Gotham Stakes (G3) and third in the Wood Memorial Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G2). Bred in Kentucky by Hill 'n' Dale and Stretch Run Ventures, Cloud Computing races for Klaravich Stables and William Lawrence.

Wicked Lick is twice stakes-placed, having finished second in the both the Silverbulletday Stakes and the TwinSpires.com Fair Grounds Oaks (G2). The filly out of Here Music (Dehere) is 15th on the Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) leaderboard. Wicked Lick is a homebred racing for Lee Mauberret. BH s Share this story
